Orlando Pirates striker describes the new coach
Orlando Pirates star Tshegofatso Mabasa has shared his thoughts on the club's new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Moroccan tactician was appointed last month to lead the Buccaneers in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Ouaddou joins Orlando Pirates after a notable spell with Marumo Gallants, where he helped the team avoid relegation and earned praise for implementing an exciting style of play. Image: @orlandopirates/X Abdeslam Ouaddou was appointed head coach of Orlando Pirates following the departure of Jose Riveiro, whose contract expired at the end of last season. Riveiro has since taken over at Al Ahly after a successful three-year spell with the Soweto giants, during which he won five trophies, including three consecutive MTN8 titles. Sundowns news: Irqaam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro 'I think the biggest thing about coach [Ouaddou] is that he's a very demanding coach, but he loves his players at the same time,' Mabasa said via FARPost . 'And he's also an encourager, quite similar to coach Jose. There's not a lot that coach Ouaddou is trying to change. It's only how we defended our set pieces and how we dealt with transitions. 'He's just trying to improve the areas that we lacked last season, and we feel it's mostly from set pieces. We lost the [CAF] Champions League because of set pieces; we conceded three goals against Pyramids FC from set pieces, and we're out of the tournament. 'It's very funny how we lost the Champions League on set pieces, yet in the country, we were the best in terms of defending set pieces. So, coach Ouaddou is just trying to improve on areas we lacked last season,' Mabasa concluded. Comment: PSL's blunders compromise league kick-off amid Cape Town City drama
Monde Mpambaniso of Marumo Gallants receives a yellow card during the Betway Premiership match last season as he has become the centre of debate. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Just days before the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season is set to begin, South African football finds itself lurching into yet another administrative crisis — and the credibility of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is once again in the spotlight. This time, it's a registration blunder involving Marumo Gallants and midfielder Monde Mpambaniso that could lead to the reshuffling of relegation standings, MTN8 qualification, and potentially delay the league's scheduled kick-off. Cape Town City, who were relegated via the play-offs, have been handed a lifeline by a SAFA arbitration ruling. Their appeal against Gallants' use of Mpambaniso was upheld, with Arbitrator Nazeer Cassim SC finding that the player had been fielded in 26 matches without a valid clearance certificate — in breach of Rule 31.8.9.3 of the NSL Handbook. If they lose, Gallants will get relegated as points will be deducted from all the matches where the player was involved, and Kaizer Chiefs will qualify for the top eight after initially missing out. Next Stay Close ✕ The potential domino effect is staggering: Gallants drop out of the top flight, City are reinstated, and Chiefs — who finished ninth — replace them in the MTN8. All of this stems not from action on the field, but from poor governance off it. And this isn't a first for the PSL. Back in 2019, the League faced a similar scandal involving Mamelodi Sundowns and Wayne Arendse. The defender was fielded against Bidvest Wits despite not being named in the original 18-man squad — a clear breach of league rules. Yet the PSL failed to enforce real consequences. Sundowns and Arendse were each fined R250,000 (half suspended), but no points were docked, and Wits received no benefit. That incident set a dangerous precedent: one where rules were applied selectively, and where powerful clubs could escape meaningful sanctions. Fast forward to 2024, and we're staring at a case even more serious — involving a full season's worth of matches played under a cloud of ineligibility, with no action taken by the PSL's own structures until SAFA stepped in. I don't condone the incompetence of Marumo Gallants administration but come on man, Capetown City deserves to be in the NFD,they failed twice in the field of play to protect their PSL status, now they want to mess the whole league up,I hope they lose — Shamase (@uNdu_Mk) July 28, 2025 Cassim's remarks were damning: 'A little effort would have clarified these features of the registration form.' He highlighted not just Gallants' incompetence, but also exposed the PSL's lack of oversight. The League's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) had already ruled against City before being overruled — a blunder that could now upend the start of the season. The PSL has long prided itself on being Africa's best-run league, but repeated administrative failures say otherwise. The disciplinary process must now unfold swiftly and transparently. If Gallants are guilty, points must be deducted — and the league standings corrected accordingly. Anything less would signal a continuation of the PSL's double standards and further erode trust among clubs, sponsors, and fans. South African football deserves better than this recurring chaos. Until governance improves, the league's integrity — and its fixtures — will remain compromised.

Cape Town City, Gallants case could throw PSL season into chaos
Cape Town City chair John Comitis is not getting excited yet despite his side having won a case at a South African Football Association (Safa) arbitration hearing against Marumo Gallants that could throw the new Premier Soccer League (PSL) season into disarray. The Citizens filed a case against Gallants, arguing midfielder Monde Mphambaniso was not properly registered when signed from the team when it in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) in the 2023-24 season. They sold that franchise and it which subsequently became Leruma United. Gallants returned to the Premiership ahead of the 2024-25 season by buying the franchise of Moroka Swallows. City alleged Gallants violated Rule 31.8.9.3 of the NSL handbook, which requires a clearance certificate to be submitted to the league in cases where a player has previously been registered as a professional with a member club.

PSL side face points deduction over illegal player saga
PSL side Marumo Gallants could face a heavy points deduction in the Betway Premiership following a major ruling over the registration saga involving midfielder Monde Mphambaniso. Cape Town City filed a formal complaint, claiming that Mphambaniso never received a proper clearance from Gallants' former Motsepe Foundation Championship squad, which was later sold and rebranded as Leruma United. Marumo Gallants returned to South Africa's elite league in July 2024 after acquiring the Premiership status of Moroka Swallows. In doing so, the Bloemfontein-based side offloaded their second-tier status to a new ownership consortium, who renamed the club Leruma United. However, the transfer of Mphambaniso between these entities has now sparked controversy. In the 2024/2025 campaign, Gallants finished 10th in the league with 32 points from 28 matches, a return of 8 wins, 8 draws, and 12 defeats. Mphambaniso featured in 26 of those games. Cape Town City argued that Marumo Gallants breached NSL Rule 31.8.9.3, which states that clubs must submit a clearance certificate for any player previously registered as a professional. According to the arbitration ruling, Gallants failed to provide the necessary documentation for Mphambaniso. 'City alleges that Marumo Gallants violated Rule 31.8.9.3 of the NSL handbook, which requires a clearance certificate to be submitted to the league in cases where a player has previously been registered as a professional with a member club.' SAFA's arbitration ruled in favour of Cape Town City. Paving the way for the Premier Soccer League's disciplinary committee to launch an official investigation. A guilty verdict could see Gallants lose points from matches in which Mphambaniso played, potentially altering the final league standings. Despite failing to survive the Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, which Orbit College won. Cape Town City are now banking on this case to reclaim their place in the top tier. 'This is their final attempt to maintain their top-flight status.' If the PSL rules in City's favour, Gallants could be forced into the playoffs or even face automatic relegation. With the season set to begin soon, the pressure mounts for both clubs as the disciplinary process gains momentum. Will the PSL side Cape Town City get back to the top flight?
