More than 300,000 trees planted as part of Dubai's green push

Dubai Municipality has completed a series of landscaping and afforestation projects across key roads and intersections in the first half of 2025, as part of its broader Green Dubai initiative. The projects, worth AED 190 million, covered over 3 million square metres and saw more than 300,000 trees and seedlings planted, along with expansive ground cover and flowering plants. Native species like sidr, ghaf, and neem were included, along with ornamental trees to enhance the city's visual appeal. Some of the locations transformed include intersections along Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Al Khawaneej Street. Smart, sustainable irrigation systems powered by IoT technology are also part of the upgrades, ensuring efficient water use and long-term sustainability. Marwan bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, says the projects support the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and aim to enhance the quality of life across the emirate. In a striking design touch, the intersection of Al Khail Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street now features vertical lighting inspired by traditional Arab architecture—changing colours to mark national occasions. By the end of Q1 2025, Dubai Municipality was managing over 5.5 million trees and seedlings, 8.7 million square metres of green areas, 2 million square metres of seasonal flowers, 6.3 million square metres of ground covers, and 1.3 million linear metres of plant fencing. Dubai to close all landfills by 2027

Dubai looks set to close all landfills in the emirate in just two years, it has been revealed. The city's waste and sewage experts have highlighted that current plans will see all landfills closed by 2027. Ahead of the previously announced date of 2030, Dubai Municipality bosses have been hard at work on alternative ways to dispose of waste. A Waste-to-Energy Centre in the Warsan district of the city has, so far, been able to process approximately two million tonnes of waste per year. Waste at the centre is able to generate 220 megawatts of renewable energy per hour, totalling 5,280 megawatts daily, which is enough to power more than 135,000 homes. The latest update on waste management in the city was made at a media briefing hosted by the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) as part of its 'Meet the CEO' series. An update was also provided on the Dubai Strategic Tunnels for Sewerage Project, which aims to modernise Dubai's sewerage system by transitioning from a pumped to a gravity-based system, decommissioning pump stations for greater sustainability. The Dhs80 billion project has recently completed the tendering phase for public-private partnerships and is, therefore, further along in its development. An update was also provided on the Tasreef project, a unified rainwater drainage system scheduled for completion by 2033. The much-needed drainage project is now underway, with the initial four phases set to serve nine areas across Dubai. A total investment of Dhs30 billion will be made into the sewerage system in the emirate, with contracts worth Dhs1.439 billion awarded in April. Dubai to open revamped Jumeirah Beach in July

Dubai: Dubai is set to reopen a revamped Jumeirah Beach in July, just in time to help beachgoers beat the peak summer heat. This was revealed during a media briefing hosted by the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) as part of its 'Meet the CEO' series, featuring Marwan bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, and various CEOs from the municipality. Bin Ghalita highlighted the municipality's priorities and the latest progress across a range of areas, including infrastructure, housing services, AI-driven technology, public health, food safety, and community spaces. As CEOs of various departments highlighted developments in their respective sectors, Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, provided updates on several ongoing projects aimed at enhancing Dubai's public spaces and expanding green areas. While discussing the progress on public park and beach development projects, Anwahi revealed that Jumeirah Beach, where construction is ongoing, is set to open to the public in July this year. He also provided updates on enhancements at Al Mamzar Beaches, saying the project covers the Creek and Corniche areas around Al Mamzar Beach Park. Dh355m beach development project In June 2024, Dubai announced a Dh355 million beach development project that includes the development of Al Mamzar and Jumeirah 1 public beaches. Dubai's first floating pedestrian bridge in Al Mamzar and a 24x7 night beach in Deira are also part of the initiative. At the time, the Higher Committee for Urban Planning and Well-Being stated that the projects were slated for completion within 18 months, spanning a total of 5.7 km—4.3 km at Al Mamzar and 1.4 km at Jumeirah 1. As per the latest update, Jumeirah 1 Beach is expected to reopen ahead of schedule following its facelift. These beach development initiatives align with the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to increase the length of public beaches by 400 percent. In December last year, Dubai Municipality announced that the night-swimming beaches in Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3, and Umm Suqeim 1 had welcomed approximately 1.5 million visitors within the first 18 months of their opening in 2013. 600 trees planted daily Meanwhile, Anwahi also noted the extensive, round-the-clock efforts required to support citywide landscaping and irrigation. 'Municipality teams plant around 600 trees daily, while its nurseries produce 90 million seedlings a year using advanced technology and robotics,' he said.
