Jinkx Monsoon Mocks J.K. Rowling's Hypocritical Transphobia: ‘Not a Feminine Name in the Slightest'
It is officially monsoon season, so it's no wonder why Broadway star and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Jinkx Monsoon is unleashing a deluge on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. In a new clip from her upcoming interview with Ziwe, Monsoon answers a tongue-in-cheek question about whether or not Rowling would 'make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago' by pointing out why she feels the author's transphobic comments over the years feel deeply hypocritical. More from Billboard Jinkx Monsoon Will Sashay Into the Leading Role of Broadway's 'Oh, Mary!' This Summer Jinkx Monsoon Will Fight 'Tooth and Nail' to Keep Queer Talent in the Mainstream After Her 'Doctor Who' Arc Jade Thirlwall Leads Her Mighty Hoopla Crowd in an Anti-J.K. Rowling Chant Putting on a drunk affectation, Monsoon started off her answer by pretending she didn't know Rowling and actively using the wrong pronouns for her. 'Who is Jake? Who is he? Jake Hay Rowling?' she said, clutching a rocks glass. When Ziwe pointed out that Rowling is a 'she,' Monsoon quickly quipped, 'Oh, dear. That is not a feminine name in the slightest.' The performer then went on to use her faux-confusion as a jumping off point, saying that Rowling intentionally misled readers about her own gender at the outset of her career. 'I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer,' Monsoon explained, before adding with a smirk, 'I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived.' In past interviews, Rowling has revealed that she wrote under a pen name (her real name is Joanne) because her publishers wanted to 'disguise' her gender so the book would 'appeal to boys and girls.' It's worth noting Rowling also writes her ongoing Cormoran Strike crime series under the male pseudonym Robert Galbraith. In an FAQ on Galbraith's website, Rowling says that she writes under a male nom de plume simply because she 'wanted to take my writing persona as far away as possible from me.' Rowling has made headlines over the last few years for her transphobic comments online, and for actively campaigning against reformational laws in the U.K. that would allow transgender people to change their legal gender. When the U.K. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the legal definition of a woman only applied to those whose biological sex was female, Rowling posted a controversial photo of herself drinking a cocktail and smoking a cigar in celebration. 'I love it when a plan comes together,' she wrote. Monsoon, meanwhile, is currently transitioning between two massive theater projects. After playing the role of Ruth in the Tony-nominated Pirates! A Penzance Musical, Monsoon is gearing up to star as Mary Todd Lincoln in the Tony-winning play Oh, Mary! Monsoon takes over the role from Tituss Burgess starting on Monday (Aug. 4). At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find seats for any one Monsoon/Urie/Nanjiani/Harris production in August and September was $117 including fees on Vivid Seats. Kumail Nanjiani and Michael Urie are joining the Oh, Mary! cast this summer
Mary's getting a new cabinet! The Tony-winning production of Oh, Mary! has just announced that joining Jinkx Monsoon in her eight-month stint as Mary Todd Lincoln will be Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Urie and Jenn Harris. The new foursome will begin their bratty hijinks at the Lyceum Theater on Monday, August 4 through Sunday, September 28. This will mark Nanjiani and Harris' Broadway debuts, and Urie's first return since his Drama Desk-winning turn in the 2024 revival of Once Upon a Mattress. Tony-nominee Conrad Ricamora, James Scully and Bianca Leigh, who originated their roles in the play's Off-Broadway premiere at the Lucille Lortel Theater last year, debuted them on Broadway, and are currently back for an encore, will play their final performances on August 2. Tituss Burgess, in his second go-round as Mary Todd Lincoln, will also bow out that day. Tony Macht, who has been with the production from the start, will also play his final performance as 'Mary's Husband's Assistant' on September 28. Nanjiani, an Academy Award and Emmy nominee for his work on The Big Sick and The Twilight Zone, and known for his performance in Marvel's Eternals, will step into the role of 'Mary's Husband.' Harris, recently of American Fiction and the TV series Elsbeth, and a Lortel winner for her performance in Modern Orthodox, will be the next 'Mary's Chaperone.' Urie, a Broadway mainstay who just received his first Emmy nomination for his performance in Shrinking, will play 'Mary's Teacher.' The three will be witness to what is sure to be yet another stage triumph for Jinkx Monsoon, a RuPaul's Drag Race favorite who has recently taken to Broadway, with box office-breaking turns in Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, and Pirates! The Penzance Musical. Monsoon is the production's fourth official Mary Todd Lincoln, following Escola, Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess and standby Hannah Solow. Written by Cole Escola, Oh, Mary! is a proudly ridiculous spoof of the final days of Abraham Lincoln's presidency, in which Mary Todd Lincoln is a miserable alcoholic longing for her cabaret-starring heyday, and dealing with an obviously gay husband. The play had a blockbuster premiere Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theater in February, 2024 before transferring to the Lyceum Theater. It became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, and netted five Tony nominations, including Best Play. Escola won for their performance as Mary Todd Lincoln, as did director Sam Pinkleton for his work on the production.

Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet Reach Relationship Milestone in Private Celebration
Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are still together, and Jenner wants Instagram to know about it. The actor was silently followed on the platform by the beauty entrepreneur. The only reason Chalamet didn't reciprocate was because he doesn't follow anyone. Not even her ex-husband Travis Scott, with whom she co-parents their two children, Stormi and Aire, is one of the 119 people Jenner follows. In her personal life, the celebrity cherishes privacy. She has made it a point to avoid discussing Chalamet in interviews, saying to ELLE this autumn, 'I think it's important to keep things to yourself. It's hard for me to make a decision by myself sometimes, so the opinion of the whole world…it can be tough.' However, Chalamet and Jenner have gone on public dates. They made their red carpet debut at the 70th David Di Donatello Awards in Rome this May, and they went to the Oscars together.
