Couple stops for gas on trip and buys Powerball ticket. Then comes big ‘surprise'

A couple bought a Powerball ticket 'for fun' while getting gas on a road trip, and the wife thought they won $100. Then she realized they won much more. The Virginia parents of five took a trip up to the beach in Delaware, and they were driving home through Chester, Maryland, when they had to stop for gas, the Maryland Lottery said July 31. They decided to buy five Powerball combinations and headed home. 'We just buy when we think of it for fun,' the husband told lottery officials. 'We never really expect to win.' The next day the wife checked the results from the July 12 Powerball drawing and saw the first combination on their ticket matched four out of five white balls. Her daughter told her that would be worth $100, lottery officials said. Then the mom noticed their ticket matched the Powerball number, too, turning it into a $50,000 prize, according to the Maryland Lottery. 'Thirty-five dollars is the most I've ever won before,' the husband told lottery officials. 'It was a happy surprise.' To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

‘She doesn't believe it.' Powerball player takes photo proof of win for wife

When a Powerball player told his wife about his big win in Maryland, she thought he was making things up, lottery officials said. 'She doesn't believe it,' the man from Adelphi told Maryland Lottery officials, according to a July 31 news release. Now, he hopes a photo of him holding a novelty check will be enough to prove the win to her, lottery officials said. The lucky player won a prize worth $150,000 in the June 21 Powerball drawing after choosing a ticket because it had his lucky number, the lottery said. 'I usually go with my own numbers, but I liked this quick pick because it had a 24,' he told lottery officials. 'I said, 'let's go for it!'' The winning numbers in the June 21 drawing were 3, 16, 32, 52 and 62, according to the game's web page. The Powerball was 24. The winner matched four of the first five balls drawn plus the Powerball for a prize of $50,000, and a Power Play option tripled it, lottery officials said. He bought his winning ticket at a 7-Eleven in Riverdale, about a 5-mile drive northeast from Washington, D.C. He told lottery officials he also plans to use the winnings to take his wife to a celebratory dinner. The next Powerball drawing is Aug. 2, and the estimated jackpot as of July 31 is $410 million.

Worker had nobody to eat lunch with, so he played the lottery. Then came big win

A nontypical solo lunch date for a Maryland worker turned into an exciting top prize lottery win, officials said. The man from Nottingham told lottery officials he usually has lunch with co-workers but found himself alone one day at a cafe in Cockeysville, about a 20-mile drive northwest from Baltimore. 'There was no one to eat lunch with, so I got four scratch-off tickets to kill time,' the man told the Maryland Lottery, according to a July 31 news release. After getting his tickets and his food, he went back to his office, lottery officials said. Later on, he scratched off the tickets and realized he'd won big after the first ticket, the lottery said. The lucky lottery player won a top prize worth $57,777 from a Lucky 7s Tripler he bought for $5, according to the lottery. When he showed his wife, she didn't believe it was real, he told lottery officials. . Five of the eight top prizes remain for the game that started in March, lottery officials said.

Lottery player picks numbers inspired by late father, wins big. ‘Thank you, dad'

Inspired by her late father, a Maryland woman bought a lottery ticket — and it led to a big prize. The Calvert County woman placed a straight $1 bet on a Pick 5 ticket using numbers from the day of her father's death, Maryland Lottery officials said in a July 30 news release. The player checked the numbers on her ticket, which she bought at a Prince Frederick convenience store, for the July 25 evening draw and initially thought she 'had won a smaller prize on a boxed bet pick,' lottery officials said. Soon, though, she realized she had 'a perfect match on a straight bet ticket for a top prize' of $50,000, lottery officials said. 'I got that bad boy straight,' the winner said. The woman, who told lottery officials she only buys lottery tickets on Sundays but plays every day, is not stranger to big lottery wins. Two years ago, she won a $62,000 Racetrax prize and also won a 'memorable prize in 2015 on the animated horses game,' lottery officials said. For her most recent lottery win, the woman said she credits her late father. 'My dad sent me some good luck,' she said. 'Thank you, dad.' The winner told lottery officials she plans to use her winnings to 'get her finances straight' and to buy a truck for her husband. Prince Frederick is about a 60-mile drive south form Baltimore.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo July 30 (UPI) -- A Maryland woman used the date of her father's death to place a $1 bet on a Pick 5 lottery drawing and ended up winning $50,000. The Calvert woman told Maryland Lottery officials she was shocked to realize her father's death date had given her a perfect match on a straight bet ticket for a top prize in the July 25 evening drawing. "I got that bad boy straight," the winner said. "My dad sent me some good luck. Thank you, dad." The woman previously collected a $62,000 prize from the lottery's Racetrax virtual horse racing game in 2023 and also won a big prize in 2015. The Dash-In convenience store on North Solomon's Island Road in Prince Frederick, the retailer that sold the winning ticket, was awarded a $500 bonus.
