Boston Red Sox' Masataka Yoshida told Alex Cora he needed ‘two days'

BOSTON — Manager Alex Cora and Masataka Yoshida had a conversation before the 31-year-old Japanese outfielder began his rehab assignment July 1. Cora asked him how many minor league at-bats he needed. 'Two days,' Cora said Yoshida told him. Yoshida's rehab assignment was brief, although not as short as he apparently wanted it to be. It lasted five games and 17 plate appearances. 'Honestly, I wanted to come back sooner than today,' Yoshida said through translator Yutaro Yamaguchi. He certainly looked ready in his 2025 debut Wednesday. He went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI single and one run to help lead the Red Sox to a 10-2 win over the Rockies at Fenway Park. Yoshida missed Boston's first 93 games following offseason shoulder surgery. 'We talk about the gap between the big leagues and Triple A. He feels like getting at-bats here is better than actually getting at-bats down there,' Cora said. 'It's a different atmosphere, right? Yoshida added. 'Even if I ... do well in the minors, it doesn't really reflect (what will happen) in the major leagues. It's just a different atmosphere. So that's why I felt I really didn't need that (many) rehab games.' Yoshida also used the Trajekt pitching machine, which simulates every major league pitcher's windup and repertoire. The machine has helped many players shorten their rehab assignments and return quicker because of its real-game simulation. On the third pitch of his first at-bat, Yoshida ripped a 96.2 mph fastball from Antonio Senzatela into center field for a single. He hit an RBI single off first baseman Michael Toglia's glove and into right field to put Boston ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning. He also doubled in the eighth and scored on Romy Gonzalez's two-run homer that gave Boston a 7-2 lead. 'Happy to have Masa back. That's a big at-bat for us,' Cora said. 'You saw the difference today — how long the lineup was. And that's without Ceddanne (Rafaela) in the lineup. We have to figure out who's going to play and all that stuff. But I think it's the deepest lineup we've had in a while here.' Yoshida's return was delayed because shoulder soreness affected his throwing. He showed in spring training the shoulder issue didn't have much of an effect on his hitting. He appeared in 11 Grapefruit League games and batted .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and double. But the Red Sox wanted him to be able to play the outfield before returning, especially with Rafael Devers serving as the everyday DH back then. 'He did a good job throughout the rehab, tracking pitches and the swing was always there,' Cora said. 'He had a little setback at one point with his back when he went to Fort Myers. But the guy, he's a good hitter. He's a professional in every aspect. 'I was worried that he was going to be frustrated with the whole situation of him being able to hit and not being activated,' Cora added. 'But I talked to (his translator) about that and he was like, 'No, he's not because he's not ready.' He wasn't ready with his arm. We talk about the throwing. But the swing, yeah, it might have looked good but it wasn't where it was supposed to be — and now it is. So we're happy to have him back.' Red Sox roster moves: Masataka Yoshida returns, reliever moved to 60-day IL

BOSTON — Masataka Yoshida is officially back. The Red Sox made three roster moves before their game against the Rockies on Wednesday. They officially reinstated Yoshida from the 60-day injured list and optioned Nate Eaton to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Yoshida on the 40-man roster, Boston transferred right-handed reliever Nick Burdi from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Yoshida is returning from a right shoulder labral repair that he underwent last October. He will make his 2025 debut as the DH. He's batting sixth in the lineup. The 31-year-old Japanese outfielder has batted .285 with a .343 on-base percentage, .433 slugging percentage, .775 OPS, 25 homers, 54 doubles, three triples, 128 RBIs, 116 runs, 61 walks and 133 strikeouts in 248 games (1,001 plate appearances) for Boston over two seasons (2023-24). Burdi has been on the injured list since June 3 with a right foot contusion. He hard-throwing righty has pitched 5 ⅓ scoreless innings over four relief appearances for Boston this year. Red Sox Announce Masataka Yoshida News After Five Game Winning Streak originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are currently on a five-game winning streak as they continue their homestand against the Colorado Rockies. Advertisement In exciting news for fans, Masataka Yoshida is set to make his season debut at designated hitter during the series finale against Colorado. After completing a five-game rehab assignment, Yoshida returned to Boston on Monday and is anticipated to provide a boost to the lineup. Though he may not command the same star power as Alex Bregman, Yoshida is known for his quality at-bats from the left side, making him a valuable asset for the Red Sox. He will primarily serve as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers, sharing that role with Rob Refsnyder. While he participated as a DH during Spring Training, he was not cleared in time to join the team at the start of the season. This issue became particularly relevant with Rafael Devers, who had been focusing solely on the DH position until he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. Advertisement To accommodate Yoshida on the roster, MassLive's Chris Cotillo reports that outfielder Nate Eaton, has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester. Last season, Yoshida played in 108 games, finishing with a slash line of .280/.349/.415, including 10 home runs and 56 RBIs. Red Sox sweep Rockies as Masataka Yoshida collects 3 hits in season debut

BOSTON — It was a point in the schedule the Boston Red Sox had to dominate to stay afloat in the American League wild-card race as the trade deadline nears. They took care of business. The Red Sox poured on five runs in the eighth inning as rain fell at Fenway Park for a 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies and their second straight series sweep. They swept the Washington Nationals over the weekend. The Rockies and Nationals have struggled mightily this season, but the Red Sox can't afford to lose winnable games, making it six straight wins and eight of their last nine. Advertisement 'Early in the season, we didn't do a good job against certain teams, and we actually talked about it before Washington,' manager Alex Cora said. 'We've been playing well (of late). Now, obviously we've got Tampa Bay (coming up).' In his season debut, Masataka Yoshida posted a 3-for-4 night as designated hitter with an RBI single in the fourth, making it a 2-0. He added a double in the eighth. Yoshida had missed the first 93 games of the season following offseason shoulder surgery, but his bat brings more depth to the Red Sox lineup. Macho Man working! 💪 — Red Sox (@RedSox) July 10, 2025 'Happy to have Masa back,' Cora said. 'That's a big at-bat for us. You saw the difference today, how long the lineup was, and that's without Ceddanne (Rafaela) in the lineup. We have to figure out who is gonna play and all that stuff, but I think it's the deepest lineup we have in a while here.' Yoshida has had a long road to recovery since surgery. Though he'd been hitting since the spring, his throwing shoulder hadn't gained enough strength to play the outfield, and until the Red Sox traded designated hitter Rafael Devers nearly a month ago, Yoshida had no avenue to join the team. With Devers gone, Yoshida returned and will DH against right-handers with Rob Refsnyder facing left-handers. Cora will mix and match the rest of the outfield now that Roman Anthony, who'd spent time at DH following the Devers trade, will be playing more in the outfield. 'I think we can actually make this work and keep them fresh,' Cora said of his rotating roster, joking he'd pick a name from a hat each night on who to sit. 'They could keep doing that (offensively) and make it harder on me.' Yoshida may also see time in the outfield on an 'as needed' basis, Cora said. He's taken grounders at first base, too, including before Wednesday's game. But Cora also noted Yoshida would only play first in an emergency. Advertisement Nevertheless, Yoshida's bat-to-ball approach strengthens the lineup at a time when the group has been rolling, scoring 10 or more runs in six of its last 11 games. And the Red Sox will be getting another bat back soon, too. Before the game, Cora said Alex Bregman would be activated this weekend for the Rays series, likely on Friday or Saturday. Since Bregman is skipping a rehab assignment following his quad injury on May 23, it's expected he won't play every day once he returns as he builds up volume in the field. Still, having yet another veteran bat, one who hit .299 with a .938 OPS in 51 games before the injury, will only add more to the offense. 'If you look at who we have and who's on the bench and what we can do, it's very versatile,' Cora said of his club. 'And we're about to get deeper in a few days.' Wednesday's win was all about the offense with homers from Carlos Narvaez, Wilyer Abreu, Romy Gonzalez and Jarren Duran, but starter Lucas Giolito continued to roll as well. The right-hander threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. He didn't issue a walk. Jarren makes it a 10-run game!!! 😤 — Red Sox (@RedSox) July 10, 2025 He became the first Red Sox pitcher since David Price in 2018 to have six straight outings of six innings or more with two or fewer earned runs allowed. In his last six starts dating to June 10, Giolito has a 0.70 ERA after he began the year with a 6.42 ERA through seven starts. 'The first month back didn't go the way we wanted, obviously,' Giolito said, noting a turning point in New York where he and pitching coach Andrew Bailey made a few tweaks. 'But we made the adjustments, got my mechanics locked in, got the feeling locked in, and I'm happy with how I have thrown the ball recently.' With four games before the All-Star break and a key series beginning Thursday against Tampa Bay, a team that sits directly ahead of them in the American League East, the Red Sox have a test heading into the break. 'There's a lot of energy right now,' Cora said. 'Obviously that comes with winning and swinging the bat well, but we've just got to be ready for (Thursday). We got a big series against the Rays and just go out there and play hard.'

Yoshida Leads Red Sox To Sweep Of Rockies With 10-2 Win

Masataka Yoshida went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI in his season debut after undergoing shoulder surgery in October, and the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Carlos Narváez, Wilyer Abreu, Romy Gonzalez, and Jarren Duran homered for the Red Sox, who matched a season best with their sixth straight win. Lucas Giolito (6-1) went six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Narváez led off the second inning with his eighth home run of the season. Abreu added a two-out two-run homer in the fifth. Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the eighth, scoring Yoshida after his ground-rule double, and Jarren Duran added a three-run shot in the inning. Yoshida, the designated hitter, also singled in the second and fourth innings. Colorado's Kyle Farmer hit two-run homer in the eighth inning off right-handed reliever Isaiah Campbell. Tyler Freeman's single leading off the fourth inning for the Rockies extended his career-best on-base streak to 23 games, the longest active streak in the majors. Key moment: With two outs and Freeman on first base in the fourth inning, the Rockies had a chance to tie the score on Michael Toglias' double off the wall in left-center. Instead, the Red Sox executed a perfect relay from center fielder Duran to shortstop Trevor Story to catcher Narváez to cut down Freeman at the plate. Key stat: Right-hander Antonio Senzatela (3-13, 6.60 ERA) extended his major league lead in losses, going five innings giving up four runs. Up next: The Red Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday with RHP Walker Buehler (6-6, 6.25 ERA) opposing RHP Taj Bradley (5-6, 4.79). The Rockies are off on Thursday before opening a three-game set in Cincinnati.
