Greenwood transfer: Atletico Madrid considering signing ex-Man United star
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has turned around his career in France. Last summer, United decided to permanently cut ties with their academy product due to off-field issues. Olympique de Marseille showed a serious interest in handing Greenwood an opportunity to rejuvenate his career and reached an agreement with United over a deal worth £26.7 million. Despite some hiccups and suggestions of disagreements with Roberto De Zerbi, Greenwood enjoyed a prolific campaign in Ligue 1. No player scored more league goals (21) than him in France's top flight last season. Atletico Madrid interested in signing Mason Greenwood According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid have renewed their interest in Greenwood on the back of his 'remarkable' season. Before moving to the south of France, Greenwood spent a season-long loan at Getafe. Atletico were widely reported to be one of the Spanish giants monitoring his performance in La Liga. The Spanish outlet claim that Greenwood's experience in Spain make him an 'attractive candidate' for Atletico, who are keen to strengthen their attack with a young and versatile forward. It is understood that Los Colchoneros are 'confident' their relationship with the player's representatives will give them an edge in the race for his signature. Atletico are reportedly already 'working on the numbers' before making a serious push for him. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Marseille star is the subject of a mammoth offer from Saudi Arabia. Manchester United to benefit from Mason Greenwood's transfer United will be closely following Greenwood's situation as they will receive a sizeable transfer windfall if he leaves Marseille. The Red Devils included a 50 per cent sell-on clause in their agreement with the French outfit in 2024. United have already raised around £15m this summer from sell-on clauses they included in contracts of Anthony Elanga, Álvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele. Angel Gomes on Mason Greenwood: 'He's a bit like a little brother to me'
Angel Gomes (24) had his first press conference as an Olympique de Marseille player this afternoon following his free transfer from Lille OSC. During this, the England international was asked about his relationship with Mason Greenwood (23). The two players both graduated from the Manchester United youth system, with Gomes making his professional debut for the club in 2017, and Greenwood following suit two years later in 2019. Gomes left United in 2020 when he joined Lille OSC, while Greenwood joined Marseille from United last summer. Advertisement Gomes explained, 'I've spoken to Mason on the phone several times. He's a bit like a little brother to me. We met when we were eight, when we played together at the youth level. Starting so young and ending up at a professional club together is rare and beautiful… I can't wait to share these moments with him in Marseille.' Greenwood was charged in 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. Those charges were dropped in 2023 due to the withdrawal of key witness evidence and testimony. Angel Gomes joins growing list of English players in La Provence Gomes joins a growing contingent of English players at Marseille (Greenwood has now officially changed his international allegiance to Jamaica), with Jonathan Rowe and CJ Egan-Riley both at the club. Thomas Partey rape charges: Government urges clubs to better protect women
The Culture Secretary has urged football to establish 'minimum standards' for 'protecting women' in the wake of Thomas Partey facing rape charges. Arsenal have faced fierce criticism from campaigners in recent days for continuing to play Partey for three years following his initial arrest in July 2022. Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has now intervened to express concern that clubs do not have a 'standard approach' when 'very, very highly-paid' players face claims of sexual assault. 'Instinctively, I think there is a problem in that there aren't minimum standards, and there isn't a standard approach and expectations of how clubs will approach this,' she said in an interview with Gabby Logan on the Sports Agents podcast. 'I would prefer to see clubs coming together and agreeing a standard approach that makes sure that they are protecting women in that situation, and that is very much a conversation that I'll be having with them.' Partey was charged with five counts on rape and one of sexual assault on Friday as Arsenal came under immediate scrutiny for continuing to play him for three years. The 32-year-old was one of the club's top earners and after his initial arrest he remained a key figure in three consecutive title challenges and last season's run to the Champions League semi-final. Football's responses to rape allegations against players have varied over the years. Manchester United suspended Mason Greenwood immediately on full pay after he was arrested in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online. Charges against the former England international including attempted rape and assault were dropped on February 2, 2023. Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, who was charged with rape and sexual assault in August 2021, was suspended without pay from then until he left the club in June 2023. After being cleared of the charges, however, Mendy last year won an employment tribunal claim that he was entitled to 'the majority of his unpaid salary' from City. Nandy, speaking on the podcast, said she had already spoken to some clubs regarding protocols following allegations against former Fulham owner Mohamed Al-Fayed. 'I started this conversation with many clubs in the wake of the allegations about Mohamed Al-Fayed – a number of historical allegations that surfaced, not just in football, but it obviously affected women who'd been in football, working in football, playing, and so on,' she said. She added that the case surrounding Partey must be allowed to 'play out', but suggested further discussions would take place with clubs. 'It's not for Government to tell clubs what they can and can't do, but there is certainly a role, as I see it, for Government ministers, myself and Stephanie Peacock, to be initiating that conversation with clubs and trying to get to a place where women in football know that they are properly protected and supported,' she added. 'There is a particular problem in that there's a power dynamic. So your football stars are stars, and they are very, very highly paid. They're prioritised in terms of they're a major asset to the club – a financial asset, as well as an asset on the pitch. And so there is a power imbalance there that means that there have to be proper standards, and there have to be high expectations of how those things are managed. 'You can't just rely on people who are much more junior, who have less economic value to the institution, being the people who come forward and try and make change. So that's why I think there is a real role for Government here to convene that and to try and ensure that action is taken.' Nandy's comments come after Faduma Hassan, a member of the Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence, wrote in an article for Telegraph Spor t that an 'institutional failure goes far beyond my club'. 'The Premier League and FA have no clear protocols,' she added. 'Clubs deflect to the FA. The FA deflects back. That's not a loophole. It is a chasm of accountability.' Partey denies the allegations and has said he 'welcomes the opportunity to clear his name'. The Premier League and FA have declined to comment while proceedings are active. Arsenal are understood to have followed legal advice throughout. 'The player's contract ended on 30 June,' the club said. 'Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.'

Mason Greenwood reunites with two more ex-Man Utd team-mates for training session in Manchester
MASON GREENWOOD has reunited with two more ex-Man United teammates for a training session in Manchester. The Marseille striker, 23, has spent the summer in England after netting 22 goals under former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. 6 6 6 Greenwood played 129 times for United before joining Marseille for £26.6million last summer. And in June he was spotted training in Manchester alongside former United pal D'Mani Mellor. But despite the Ligue 1 season not starting until mid-August, Greenwood has once again been back in his home town for a brutal training session. This time, the forward was joined by not one but two former United teammates. The first was England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who is still at Old Trafford and desperate to nail down a spot under Ruben Amorim. Greenwood's second pal was none other than James Garner, who is entering his fourth season at Everton after making just seven appearances for United before leaving in 2022. And the big-name trio turned heads at a council playing fields in Manchester as they donned training gear and football boots. Greenwood will be hoping that his extra work during the summer break will boost his numbers further next term. His haul of 22 was markedly better than the 10 goals netted while on loan at Getafe during the 2023/24 season. And it's five better than the 17 struck while playing for United in the 2019/20 campaign. Ex Man Utd star Mason Greenwood welcomes 2nd child with partner Harriet Robson after starting new life in France 6 6 Indeed, Marseille boss De Zerbi reckons Greenwood can become a generational player. He said: 'Greenwood is a natural talent. All the credit goes to his mother and father. And I'm here to help him become more complete. 'When he needs a hug, a word of support, I gladly give it. And when I need to push him to give more, I have to do that too because that's my job. 'I would especially like to help him be remembered, in this stadium and by these supporters, as one of the greatest players to have played here at the Velodrome. 'There have been so many great players here, but I think Greenwood has the qualities to be remembered that way. And I'm trying to help him progress.'
