Masterton police crack down on illegal hunting in Wairarapa

Photo: Supplied / NZ Police Masterton police have ramped up efforts to tackle unlawful hunting in Wairarapa with multiple arrests and firearm seizures in recent months. On Wednesday, a 50-year-old man was arrested after police discovered three firearms and cannabis at his Masterton address during a search. He is due to appear in Masterton District court on 4 August, facing charges for unlawful possession of non-prohibited firearms, cultivating cannabis and unlawful hunting. Another man, aged 44, was also arrested at the same address on unrelated charges, including kidnapping and indecent assualt. The arrests came off the back of work done by the Wairarapa Rural team to hold poachers accountable, police said. Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Nick Thom said poaching was a serious and often under-reported issue in rural communities. "Poaching has real effects on the community and any offenders will face real-world consequences," he said. Two other men were charged with unlawful hunting earlier this year, with both cases linked to illegal firearms. Both men are due to appear in Masterton District Court on 24 July. "This should serve as a reminder that people should not be shooting from vehicles or targeting deer on private land," Thom said. "People must have a firearms license and get permission to hunt prior to going out to do so. "You can expect to face enforcement action if you are found to be breaching these rules." He asked locals to report any suspicious behaviour or vehicles to police. Expressions Of Interest Now Open For New Hangar Sites At Masterton's Historic Aviation Hub

Masterton's Hood Aerodrome has launched expressions of interest for 28 new hangar sites, marking a significant expansion of one of New Zealand's earliest aviation hubs. The development, set for completion by the end of 2025, offers aircraft owners the chance to secure prime hangar space at the historic Wairarapa aerodrome nestled beneath the soaring Tararua Ranges. Major infrastructure upgrades, including a fully resealed 30m wide runway, support the development and position Hood as a modern aviation destination while preserving its rich 90-year heritage. "This development represents a fantastic opportunity for aircraft owners to join our growing community," said Maseina Koneferenisi, Chief Executive of Hood Aerodrome. "We're offering aviators the chance to base themselves at a truly special location where they can enjoy upgraded hangar and flying facilities without the congestion and high costs of city airports." Hood's central North Island location provides quick access to destinations across New Zealand, while the aerodrome's comprehensive on-site services ensure hassle-free flying. Two fuel bowsers, aircraft engineers, and specialist maintenance services are all available, complemented by an enthusiastic and active local aviation community. The aerodrome's unique character stems from its dramatic setting between soaring mountains to the west and rolling hills to the east. Since 1931, when it was named after pioneering aviator George Hood, the site has captured the imagination of pilots and visitors alike. Today, WWI and WWII warbirds still take to the skies above the Wairarapa landscape, maintaining the aerodrome's connection to aviation history. "Hood offers something you simply can't find at commercial airports," "Whether you're chasing Wairarapa's big skies, seeking breathtaking views, or wanting to be part of a tight-knit aviation community, this is aviation paradise." The new sites on offer come in three tiers designed to accommodate different aircraft types and budgets: Premier: 29m x 26m fully serviced site, with direct access to sealed taxiway Prime: 29m x 26m fully serviced site, with direct access to grass taxiway Standard/T Hangar: Actual size to be confirmed for smaller planes Pre-built hangar options are potentially available for Prime and Standard sites. The three-tier hangar site structure allows flexibility for different aircraft owners, from recreational flyers to private jets and smaller commercial operators. Leasing details and costs are currently being finalised, with interested parties encouraged to register their interest on sites, or receive further updates when pricing becomes available. Hood Aerodrome continues to serve as a hub for Wairarapa aviators while attracting aircraft owners from across the region. The new hangar sites represent the most significant expansion in the aerodrome's modern history. For expressions of interest and enquiries see the Hood Aerodrome Hangar Development website at

Fifth case of measles confirmed in Wairarapa

Health NZ says there is no increased measles risk to the public. Photo: AFP / nobeastsofierce / Science Photo Library A fifth case of measles has been confirmed in Wairarapa. The case [ was linked to others associated with a family that recently returned from overseas, Health NZ confirmed. It was possible there could be further linked cases to still be confirmed. Dr Craig Thornley, medical officer of health, said the latest case had been isolating to prevent the spread of the disease. He said there was no increased risk to the public or new locations of interest identified from the outbreak. People who visited Masterton Pak n Save on the mornings of 1 and 3 July and Carterton Library on 3 July should still monitor for measles symptoms. Health NZ asked locals to get themselves and their children immunised. As of 14 July, 81.5 percent of children aged 1 to 5 years old in the Wairarapa were fully immunised against measles, while about 89 percent of those aged 6-18 were. Health NZ this was still well short of the 95 percent needed for herd immunity to ensure protection for everyone against future outbreaks. "With outbreaks happening in many popular travel destinations such as the US, Canada, the UK, Vietnam, Thailand and India, people who have travelled for the school holidays and aren't fully immunised with the MMR vaccine, risk bringing it back into the country," Thornley said. Fourth case of measles confirmed in Wairarapa

A fourth case of measles has been identified in Wairarapa. (File photo) Photo: 123rf A fourth case of measles linked to overseas travel has been confirmed in Wairarapa. Health NZ said the latest person who had fallen ill had been isolating to prevent any spread of the disease. Anyone who visited the Masterton Pak'N Save and the Carterton Library from 1 July to 3 July, should monitor for measles symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes or a rash that spreads down the body, it said. Medical Officer of Health Dr Craig Thornley was urging any Wairarapa locals who weren't immunised or who hadn't previously had measles, to get vaccinated. "This includes anyone who may be planning to head overseas in the near future, given there are outbreaks happening in many popular travel destinations such as the US, Canada, the UK, Vietnam, Thailand and India. "Similarly, anyone who has recently returned from an overseas trip, should be watchful for measles symptoms." Thornley said the latest case was a reminider that it was still important for everyone to be fully vaccinated by having two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine after 12 months of age. He said there were a number of pharmacies across Wairarapa that could provide vaccinations. There was also a drop-in clinic at Masterton Intermediate School Dental Clinic which ran every Thursday from 3pm to 6pm.
