NESN's homage to the 1975 World Series, which included a look at the epic Game 6, was a home run

It was right in this 50-something's wheelhouse, and according to Amy Johnson , NESN's coordinating producer who oversaw the project, the feedback has been positive. 'Especially from those that remember the '75 team, that generation,'' she said. The inspired broadcast included a vintage score bug and simple-text graphics of the time. Play-by-play voice Dave O'Brien and analyst Lou Merloni dressed in gaudy jackets and ties that looked as if they were lifted straight from Gene Rayburn's wardrobe on 'Match Game.' (Look it up, kids.) Advertisement NESN went with a retro look for its broadcast of Tuesday's Red Sox-Reds game. NESN Reporter Jahmai Webster — wearing a shirt that looked as if it came from an exhibit on Studio 54 — voiced over some immersive flashbacks, including a look back at the epic Game 6 and a tribute to Luis Tiant , who should have been in Cooperstown long ago. Former Sox pitcher Rick Wise was an insightful guest in the booth. A graphic featuring wood paneling — ubiquitous in homes and on cars in the '70s — was a particularly nice touch. Advertisement The only disappointment was out of NESN's and the Red Sox' control. Rain, which coincidentally wreaked havoc with the schedule in the '75 World Series, forced Tuesday's game to be halted in the third inning, thereby interrupting the plan for the third and fourth innings of the broadcast to be fully retro. Related : I asked Johnson if there was more the NESN team wanted to add to the broadcast but didn't quite get to — a perm for O'Brien, or something like that, perhaps. 'I think it was almost the opposite, where we added more as we went,' she said. 'It started very basic and very simple and then as we talked about it more and thought about it more, we added more to it. This was so much fun to do because it was such a great team effort from everyone at NESN to everyone in our crew at Fenway. The buy-in is what made it a lot of fun and I think it came across on the air and with everyone involved.' Johnson said the plans to go vintage for this series had been in the works since March, with the network's sizable content-planning department involved from the get-go. Her own preparation included watching broadcasts of '70s baseball games on YouTube to be able to capture just the right groovy vibe. 'On the in-game graphics alone, we've been working for over a month trying to get those just right to make sure they were readable, accurate, and that we had enough different versions to accurately cover two whole innings of baseball — which we thought we'd have, before the rain arrived — without leaving people kind of wanting more information. Related : Advertisement 'There are very few questions unanswered on a screen in a baseball game these days, so we were trying to kind of find that middle ground. It's been really nice to hear from people who said we got it right.' NESN has more special Red Sox broadcasts planned, which are probably necessary given the underachievement of the team so far this summer. This coming week, NESN will pay tribute to the Green Monster, with Monday's broadcast originating from the Monster Seats. That's worthwhile — it will give the broadcasters a chance to see the Sox from a different vantage point. But should the Red Sox continue their mediocre ways for the next few months, who would mind another broadcast or two that takes a look back? In throwing it back to 1975, NESN proved it can do nostalgia just right. Forsberg knows his stuff A few years back, a Celtics executive gave me his impromptu scouting reports on the media members who cover the team on a regular basis. The word on NBC Sports Boston's Chris Forsberg was one of respect for the effort he puts in to understand the financial aspect of the NBA. 'He really has a great grasp on the salary cap,' the executive said. That's always stuck in my mind, and it has been proven true time and again over the past few weeks as the Celtics have shed popular players because of the dreaded penalties for being over the second apron. Forsberg's insight has been a welcome contrast on NBC Sports Boston to Michael Felger's disingenuous, predictable, and misleading 'the owners are being cheap' narrative. Worry Not, ABC's Match Game Revival Set Is Still Way Groovy (PHOTOS)

The set for ABC's upcoming Match Game revival is still so 1970s-groovy, I bet you can find shag carpeting on ______. More from TVLine Casting News: Andor Subs In for Kimmel, Connie Britton Joins Steve Carell Comedy and More Land of the Lost Reboot in the Works at Netflix Casting News: Severance Duo on Millionaire, Steve Carell Comedy Casts Bridesmaids Vet and More That's the good news born of a series of BTS photos shared on Threads by actress Constance Zimmer, who was among the more than two dozen celebrity panelists announced earlier this month. 'Did you know @matchgameabc is coming back in July with the one and only [Martin Short as host]!!! And some of us got to play along!!' wrote Zimmer. 'Such a blast!!' Short of course co-stars on Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, which also contributed more than a couple of celeb panelists to the upcoming season. ABC's previous incarnation of the classic, fill-in-the-blank game show debuted almost exactly nine years ago, hosted by 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin and featuring a set that avoided the ultra-glossy finish and dramatically swooping klieg lights spawned by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire's 1999 heyday. Instead, there was warm carpeting, family den-appropriate wood paneling, and a long, skinny, handheld mic just like former host Gene Rayburn wielded once upon a time. The 'revival' set appears to be near-identical to that one, with the same logo and only the most minor of cosmetic tweaks. (The fate of the long, skinny, handheld mic, however, remains TBD.) The Baldwin-hosted Match Game produced a total of 61 episodes, the last of which aired in July 2021. Baldwin, of course, was in the headlines in fall 2021 after a tragic incident on the set of the film Rust where he accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Match Game's cancellation at ABC was not connected to that incident, Variety reported in April 2022; in fact, the show hadn't been in production since the COVID pandemic shut down Hollywood in March 2020. The celebrity panelists on tap for this summer's Match Game revival include Adam Pally, Amy Sedaris, Ana Gasteyer, Andrea Martin, Anthony Anderson, BD Wong, Beanie Feldstein, Cara Delevingne, Caroline Rhea, Constance Zimmer, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Ego Nwodim, Jackie Tohn, Jim Belushi, Joel Kim Booster, Joel McHale, Kal Penn, Kevin Nealon, Lamorne Morris, Pete Holmes, Randall Park, Selena Gomez, Thomas Lennon, Tituss Burgess, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Von Miller and Ziwe Fumudoh. The new season of ABC's Match Game premieres Wednesday, July 23, at 9/8c, with episodes streaming next day on Hulu. A total of four contestants compete in each hour-long installment, and the prize money… remains a depressingly paltry $25,000. Want scoop on (hey, all I can do is try!), or for any other TV show? Selena Gomez Wears Little Black Miu Miu Dress With Velvet Bow Detail

THE RUNDOWN On Thursday, Selena Gomez shared some photos from her appearance on Match Game with Cara Delevingne wearing a black Miu Miu dress. The simple satin form-fitting look was topped with a velvet bow that criss-crossed her chest and over her shoulders, creating a racerback effect. In the caption of behind-the-scenes photos, she wrote, 'I realized I didn't post Marty lol HOWEVER thank you for having all of us on MATCH GAME on abc.' Her stylist, Erin Walsh, shared more shots of the full look, including the earrings and ring jewelry from Agapée. The Only Murders in the Building star was wearing her hair down in a sleek lob with a center part and had on a pale pink manicure. For makeup, the star was wearing her own Rare Beauty line with cat eyeliner, brown eyeshadow, and a warm pink lip. Shortly after sharing the new carousel, Gomez posted a shot of herself de-glammed, walking down the street in Los Angeles with her fiancé, Benny Blanco. They were both wearing comfortable hoodies, with Gomez in white and Blanco in bright blue with Hawaiian shorts. The singer had on a pair of black sunglasses and made a face towards the camera. The couple got engaged in December 2024 and have reportedly already sent out invitations to the wedding. In a joint Rolling Stone interview in March, Blanco joked about planning the big event, saying, 'I think every day she's planned a new wedding in her head. We're very much 'take it one day at a time'-type of people. We're still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.' Blanco added, 'It feels like we got engaged yesterday, but also feels like we got engaged 20 years ago. I've known her since she was 18, and so it's like we got all that stuff out of the way. By the time we're dating, it's like, whoa. My biggest regret is that we didn't get to do this earlier, like we waited this long to be together. But I know it was perfect and it was right.'

Shows from Elliot Page, Tom Green coming to Bell, planned drama ‘Bad Trips' scrapped

New shows from Elliot Page and Tom Green are among the highlights of Bell Media's 2025/26 programming slate. 'Slo Pitch,' a comedy about a scrappy queer softball team trying to make it to the beer league championships, is coming to Crave and CTV. It's the first project under a co-development deal between Pageboy Productions and Bell Media. Also in the lineup is 'Tom Green's Funny Farm,' an interview series featuring the Ottawa-born comedian hosting guests at his rural Ontario property. Coming to CTV is 'Match Game,' a revival of the American game show hosted by Martin Short and filming in Montreal this summer. 'Heated Rivalry,' a six-episode series based on the bestselling gay hockey romance novel by Nova Scotia author Rachel Reid, is also coming to Crave. The streamer will also be home to 'Letterkenny' creator Jared Keeso's still-untitled new series, which starts production in the fall and is set to première next year. A Bell spokesperson said 'Bad Trips,' Sasha Leigh Henry's limited drug-trafficking drama announced for Crave last year, will not move forward due to international financing for the project not lining up. Bell cancelled Henry's Canadian Screen Award-winning comedy 'Bria Mack Gets a Life' after one season last year. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. Returning Crave series include 'Late Bloomer,' 'Super Team Canada,' 'The Trades' and 'The Office Movers,' while 'Sullivan's Crossing,' 'The Traitors Canada' and 'The Amazing Race Canada' come back to CTV. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.

Museum Seeks To Close Funding Gap After Loss Of Federal Humanities Grant For Game Show Exhibit

As networks continue to dot their schedules with revivals of Match Game and Hollywood Squares and other mainstays, an exhibit to examine game show history and impact is looking to close a funding gap after a federal grant was pulled. The Strong Museum of Play, located in Rochester, NY, has been awarded a grant of almost $400,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to create an exhibit called Beyond the Buzzer: Game Shows in America. More from Deadline MSNBC Hires Politico's Sudeep Reddy As Washington Bureau Chief Bruce Springsteen Says Trump Is Running "A Corrupt, Incompetent And Treasonous Administration" Judge Hears Arguments In Corporation For Public Broadcasting's Challenge To Donald Trump's Removal Of Three Board Members While game shows often are dismissed as part of cultural histories, the 5,200-square-foot exhibit is meant to show their impact. The NEH grant description read, 'Game shows in America emerged in the 20th century from the confluence of several key cultural factors: the centuries-long dream that anybody with enough pluck and luck can strike it rich; the rise of mass media as the unifying glue of American culture; and the unique power of fans to actively shape the cultures they are consuming.' In addition to sets and props, the exhibit would include 'digital formats and online exhibit elements' to 'extend the exhibit's educational value while broadening its reach and accessibility.' The grant was awarded last year, but it was among the many humanities grants that were canceled following a series of President Donald Trump's executive orders that have seen the NEH rescind funding for documentary filmmakers and many other projects. The agency has continued to award grants, but has re-shifted its priorities, including to 'projects related to the nation's semiquincentennial and American exceptionalism.' Among other things, the NEH has now launched a grant program to support the design and creation of statues for Trump's National Garden of American Heroes. Per Trump's executive order, the agency has canceled projects related to diversity, equity and inclusion and environmental justice. The agency also noted that under the order, all 'federal grantmaking agencies, including NEH, must ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent effectively and are consistent with each agency's mission.' An NEH spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment on why the Museum of Play grant was pulled. The Strong Museum of Play launched the National Archives of Game Show History in 2021, along with producers Bob Boden and Howard Blumenthal. Shane Rhinewald, a spokesperson for the museum, said, 'Despite the funding setback, the museum still intends to complete the exhibit, though the size, scope, and timeline may be affected if the funding gap isn't closed through other means, including donations, other grant opportunities, and industry support. The museum's priority now is to work with donors, supporters, and others to ensure the exhibit is completed as envisioned.'
