This ‘G' Tri-Fold Phone Bends in Ways That Make Me Uncomfortable
Darwinian evolution is speedrunning foldable phone development. 'Z'-style folds from companies like the Huawei Mate XT collapse in a zig-zag pattern, exposing one side of the screen to the elements. The new alternate universe tri-fold could be Tecno's Phantom Ultimate G Fold concept phone that literally wraps around itself like a big 'G.' This actually may be the better way to do tri-folds, but Samsung would need to think long and hard about device integrity if it's using this same design for its own rumored tri-fold that's coming by the end of the year. This is foldable, PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold debuts as the world's thinnest tri-fold — 11.49mm folded, 3.49mm unfolded. Bold design. Limitless possibilities. — tecnomobile (@tecnomobile) July 17, 2025This is China-based Tecno's second attempt at a tri-fold phone. The company previously showed videos of its Z-style tri-fold last year, around the same time that Huawei was making waves with its first commercial phone with triple folding action. The redesigned concept for 2025 folds inwards twice. Unlike a Z-fold tri-fold, this means there's no part of the screen exposed when it's shut. There's a huge benefit to this for the sake of survivability. Foldable screens can bend because they're much thinner than your typical display on a candy bar-shaped smartphone. Having one side of the folded screen exposed at all times means it's more likely to brush up against any dirt or debris. The Mate XT doesn't have an IP rating for water or dust protection, which says a lot for how long the $2,800 device may last even if you keep it safe in your pocket. As we mentioned, this is merely a concept and isn't something you can buy, even if Tecno sold its devices in the U.S. When unfurled, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold has a 9.94-inch display, which is slightly smaller than the Mate XT, though Tecno's device has the added benefit of a separate exterior screen. There are more innovations happening under the hood to allow this inward-facing collapsing mechanism. The rightmost hinge is actually smaller than the one on the left. We don't have any images showing off the inner hinge system, which leaves us with questions about whether the smaller hinge is more or less brittle than the larger one. It could also leave one side of the device heavier than the other. Tecno's device seems innovative in size as well. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold clocks in at 3.49mm thick when unfolded. Even when it's not too thick when folded up at 11.49mm, which is thinner than Huawei's device, it's thicker than Samsung's recent Galaxy Z Fold 7 bi-fold or most other phones you can buy now. I'm honestly not sure how a device of this size could get any thinner without compromising the device's structure or limiting access to a USB-C port. Inevitably, tri-folds will be made for those with thick pockets or XL pocketbooks. This leaves me with extra concerns for the device's durability. More creases and more screen real estate mean there's more surface area to get damaged. What if there's dirt left on the back of the phone that then gets pressed up into the display? Other than screen size, Tecno isn't revealing much in the way of tech specs, save for the promise of an 'over 5,000 mAh battery' and a 'high-performance chipset.' Tecno isn't selling this device just yet, but what's there is enough to make me wonder what's next for foldables. If Samsung's $2,000 Z Fold 7 has finally cracked the thinness debate, where do we go from here? We expect Google will showcase a next-gen folding phone at its Made By Google event on Aug. 20. Rumors persist that Apple is working on its own foldable iPhone. The folding iPhone's thickness could be the deciding factor in whether it succeeds. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested it could be as thin as 4.5mm when unfolded, which would make it close to 9mm when shut. More recent rumors suggest it could be larger, but without official word from more reliable sources, we can only continue to guess until its rumored release date in 2026.

How Huawei is shaping the next chapter in global consumer tech
Tech giants often make headlines for innovative disruption. However, few stories are as inspiring as Huawei's, a company valued for its endurance, steady reinvention and bold innovation. Huawei has intensified its focus on self-reliance, and today, it is rewriting the rules of consumer and enterprise technology. Named among TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies of 2025, Huawei's recognition wasn't for enduring challenges but for building something even stronger in their aftermath. Huawei's transformation is most evident in its pioneering advancements in mobile design. Last year, the company introduced the MATE XT, the world's first triple-foldable smartphone: a bold leap in hardware engineering that few others in the market have dared to attempt. Triple-Fold Design and Wearables Leadership The Mate X series has already redefined smartphone innovation — but the new triple-fold takes it even further, transforming into a tablet-sized display while remaining compact enough to fit in your pocket. Huawei's evolving product philosophy embraces bold, user-centric innovation, tailored for individuals whose lives span multiple screens, roles, and digital realities. Notably, consumers in the UAE led the Middle East in Mate XT purchases, reflecting the strong brand affinity Huawei has cultivated in this dynamic and forward-thinking market. Beyond mobile design, Huawei's wearable division has emerged as a powerhouse. According to a Q1 2025 IDC report, the company now ranks #1 globally in wrist-worn wearable shipments, surpassing long-established rivals. The surge reflects Huawei's growing dominance in health-focused tech, an area that has seen increasing relevance post-pandemic. Huawei's wearable devices seamlessly integrate advanced health tracking, long-lasting battery performance, and HarmonyOS connectivity — creating an always-on ecosystem that supports users throughout their day. Locally, Huawei has partnered with Dubai Health to conduct a study evaluating the Huawei Watch 5's health monitoring capabilities, with a particular focus on its innovative X-TAP technology for tracking blood pressure and other vital signs. Huawei's wearables strategy extends beyond fitness — it's also about accessibility and inclusion. Many of its best-performing products are competitively priced, offering premium features without the premium tag. In doing so, Huawei has managed to grow its user base across diverse income groups, which is particularly relevant in fast-digitising markets like the GCC, where tech adoption spans a wide demographic range. This commitment to wide-ranging innovation extends to other industries as well. Huawei has consistently invested in intelligent mobility, driving the development of technologies powering next-generation electric vehicles. While the company does not manufacture cars, it has become a key partner to automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), integrating everything from HarmonyOS-powered infotainment systems to its proprietary driver-assistance solutions. Huawei's Long-Term Vision for the Region As Huawei continues to write its growth story, the company remains firmly committed to long-term investment in technology that is practical, inclusive, and tailored to local needs. Tonight, in Dubai, Huawei will unveil its latest flagship, the Pura80 Series, marking the global debut of the lineup following its initial launch in China. This moment represents more than a product launch; it signals Huawei's deepening commitment to the GCC region, with the UAE standing as a central pillar of its global expansion strategy. In an interview with Khaleej Times, Marty Bian, Head of Smartphone Product Marketing at Huawei Consumer Business Group, described the Pura80 series as a seamless blend of cutting-edge technology and fashion-forward design. He emphasized the strategic value of the region, highlighting that Huawei continues to select Dubai for its most significant international launches — a testament to its enduring investment in the market. Huawei's inclusion in the TIME100 list acknowledged its ability to forge its own path in the face of global challenges. Today, that path extends into new product categories, new markets, and innovative user experiences. And in the Middle East — where digital transformation is both a priority and a necessity — Huawei stands as a trusted partner, driving progress and enabling the future.

Samsung plans to unveil its first trifold smartphone in 2025
Apple Inc. is expected to enter the foldables category as early as next year. — Photographer: Michael Nagle/Bloomberg Samsung Electronics Co. plans to begin selling a so-called trifold smartphone later this year, joining rival Huawei Technologies Co. in exploring a relatively untested market that pushes the boundaries of foldable technology. Acting mobile and consumer electronics chief TM Roh disclosed the plan Wednesday on the sidelines of the company's Unpacked event in New York, where Samsung unveiled three foldable smartphones as part of a strategy to reinforce its leadership in the category. "We are working hard to release the trifold by the end of the year,' Roh told reporters. The company hasn't decided on a name for the gadget. In developing its own trifold, Samsung is gearing up to compete with Chinese rival Huawei, which unveiled the world's first trifold smartphone in September. Huawei's device, called the Mate XT, folds in two places, and when completely unfurled, it offers a large 10-inch display for advanced multitasking and more immersive entertainment consumption. Samsung's newly announced Galaxy Z Fold 7 phone, which folds in one place, has a smaller 8-inch inner display, though it's far thinner than Huawei's Mate XT when folded shut. Apple Inc. is expected to enter the foldables category as early as next year, Bloomberg has reported, with an iPhone similar in concept to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Other folding smartphones like Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola's Razr Ultra fold down vertically to a compact shape with a smaller outer screen intended for brief interactions. – Bloomberg

As Samsung tests the tri-fold waters, a major rival is readying a second-gen model
Paul Jones / Android Authority TL;DR HUAWEI is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation tri-fold phone later this year. This successor to the Mate XT Ultimate Design could arrive before Samsung's first tri-fold even hits the shelves. The new HUAWEI foldable is expected to improve on the Mate XT's durability and performance. Today's leaks may have given us clues that Samsung's first tri-fold foldable is edging closer to release, but it seems like one of its top competitors may already be another step ahead by then. According to South Korean publication The Bell (h/t Jukan Choi on X), HUAWEI plans to launch its next-generation tri-fold phone later this year. The device is expected to improve on the durability and performance of the original Mate XT Ultimate Design, which launched in China last September and went global in February. That phone reportedly sold over 400,000 units within its first two months on sale. Meanwhile, Samsung's tri-fold plans are finally coming into clearer view. Earlier today, we shared exclusive images from One UI 8 showing its design for the first time, revealing two inward-folding hinges in a G-shaped fold rather than the Mate XT's S-shaped fold. The Bell reports that Samsung will start small-scale production of its tri-fold in September, with a release expected in the fourth quarter, but availability may be limited to South Korea and China, and it certainly won't be cheap. Specs-wise, Samsung's tri-fold — possibly launching as the Galaxy G Fold — is tipped to feature a 10-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, and a camera setup similar to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, including a 200MP primary sensor. However, its slim design could mean a smaller battery than HUAWEI's Mate XT, which houses a sizable 5,600mAh cell. We reviewed the Mate XT earlier this year, and while its sky-high price and lack of Google services limited its practicality, there was no denying its engineering appeal. Now, with HUAWEI already working on a refined sequel before Samsung's first tri-fold even hits shelves, the battle for these ultra-premium foldables is only getting more intense. Got a tip? The Huawei Mate XT remains the only commercially available tri-foldable out heavily sanctioned (by numerous US administrations) company is now rumored to be preparing a second iteration of the Huawei Mate XT. What's more, a Weibo (that's the Chinese alternative to X) tipster claims the next Huawei Mate XT phone will drop come September (so, a bit over two months from now). While there are no specific hardware or software-related leaks, the tipster (called Smart Pikachu) claims the phone will support satellite connectivity. Also, the next version of the Mate XT (will it be called Mate XT 2?) should offer an upgraded chipset, as well as enhancements on the camera front, but Smart Pikachu doesn't go in detail about what to are some leaks pointing at the possibility that Huawei's upcoming Mate XT 2 may feature a major upgrade in its display, using advanced ultra-flexible glass (UFG) technology. This same material is used in Samsung's W25, a premium version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 available only in China. UFG offers better durability and flexibility than the ultra-thin glass (UTG) found in most foldable phones . It's also hinted that a Chinese manufacturer may be emerging as a rival to Germany's Schott, which currently supplies Samsung with its UFG thicker and heavier than typical foldables, the original Huawei Mate XT manages to feel comfortable in the hand and transforms into a 10.2-inch tablet with a cinematic 16:11 aspect ratio – ideal for media and productivity. The 3K OLED screen is visually stunning, although limited to a 90 Hz refresh rate, a small compromise likely made for better power is solid for everyday tasks and most games, though the in-house Kirin 9010 chip lags behind newer flagship processors, especially in graphics-heavy scenarios. International users may find the lack of native Google Services a drawback, especially those with professional Workspace accounts, although open-source solutions like microG offer partial workarounds for standard Google accounts.
