Tricked into buying ‘18 litres/day' cow, Kerala man gets consumer panel relief

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Not every promise is genuine. Mathai learnt it the hard way. Three years after he was tricked into purchasing a cow that failed to give anywhere close to the '18 litres of milk per day' he was assured, the Kasaragod native got relief from the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC). As per Mathai, he purchased a pregnant cow from Ganesh Rao, also from Kasaragod, on April 9, 2022, for Rs 36,500. Rao promised Mathai the bovine would give 18 litres of milk per day. However, after delivery, the cow gave just 2 litres of milk and reacted violently whenever it was milked. It refused to feed the calf and would kick it away, Mathai said. Mathai took the matter up with Rao. However, the latter's wife approached the police accusing him of creating nuisance at their home. During mediation by the police, Rao claimed he would prove the cow delivered the promised milk if it is milked at his residence. On the police's directive, the cow and calf were taken to his residence. However, Rao refused to return the animals. Mathai then approached the District Legal Services Authority, but Rao remained ex-parte. He then moved the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. There, he got a rude shock. Rao claimed he never sold such a cow to him. Still, the commission favoured Mathai and directed Rao to refund him, and also pay him compensation and legal costs. Aggrieved, Rao filed an appeal with the SCDRC. The bench comprising SCDRC president Justice B Sudheendra Kumar, judicial member Ajith Kumar D and member K R Radhakrishnan heard the case.

Bank Nifty scales new peak on strong buying, short covering

Mumbai : Bank Nifty closed at a record high on Thursday, riding a bullish wave , as liquidation of bearish positions ahead of the expiry of the June derivative contracts fuelled the upmove. The index comprising shares of 12 top lenders advanced for the third consecutive session, surging 1% to 57,206.70 on Thursday, the highest closing level. Technical analysts said the index is expected to be at 57,500–58,000 levels in the near term and outperform the benchmark Nifty. 'Bank Nifty has witnessed good momentum recently and the positive undertone, along with short covering , led to the index making fresh highs today,' said Nilesh Jain, head of derivatives and technical research, Centrum Broking. ET Bureau Out of the 12 stocks in the index, nine advanced and three decliThe change in RBI's policy stance and significant infusion of liquidity also boost buying interest: Analysts ned. HDFC Bank jumped close to 2% ahead of the record date for the dividend. AU Bank and Axis Bank rose around 1.5% each. ICICI Bank advanced by over 1%. State Bank of India, IDFC First Bank and Federal Bank declined. 'Most of the stocks in the banking pack were trading at low valuations sometime back and are catching up with the market currently,' said Christy Mathai, fund manager, Quantum Mutual Fund. 'The change in RBI's stance and the significant infusion of liquidity have also spurred buying interest.' In the past month, the Bank Nifty index gained 2.9%, while the benchmark Nifty advanced 2.2% in the same period. So far in 2025, the Bank Nifty is up 12% against the 7.6% gains in the Nifty. Jain said the technical setup suggests room for further upside and the provisional derivatives data indicate a strong build-up of bullish positions, which could propel the banking stocks higher. The near-term setup remains strong in HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, he said. Mathai said despite the rally in NBFC stocks, the runway for growth looks good due to their largely retail focus. 'Private banks are our top picks in the segment,' said Mathai. 'The impact on the net interest margins is also expected to normalise a few quarters down the line, and there is potential for earnings growth to pick up in the sector.' ETMarkets WhatsApp channel )

DVC signs pacts with SJVN to source hydropower to meet green energy obligations

The agreements come on the heels of five similar PPAs signed between DVC and NHPC, and are part of a broader strategy to diversify the former's energy portfolio and strengthen grid reliability across the Damodar Valley region. The hydropower will be sourced from SJVN Ltd's Sunni Dam and Luhri Stage-I Hydro Projects. Kolkata, Apr 29 (PTI) The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) on Tuesday said it has signed power purchase agreements with SJVN Ltd for sourcing hydropower, in a bid to boost the multipurpose river valley project's push towards green energy and ensure stable supply for its consumers in West Bengal and Jharkhand. 'These PPAs are aimed at securing green energy obligations in our distribution business,' DVC Member-Secretary John Mathai told PTI. 'It will help us meet 100 per cent of our future obligations in green energy — be it solar, hydro, or any other source,' he said. DVC currently distributes around 43 billion units annually across its command area in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Its power supply is primarily high-tension electricity catering to industrial consumers. Under the latest pacts, DVC will procure hydropower from SJVN as allocated by the Ministry of Power. The agreements will become effective upon the commissioning of the respective projects. With an installed capacity of nearly 6,500 MW, predominantly thermal, DVC's future expansion plans are focused heavily on clean energy. The latest agreements are expected to boost peak demand management, support industrial growth, enhance grid stability and reinforce the adoption of renewable energy in the region. 'This collaboration aligns with our strategy to provide stable, sustainable and affordable power to our consumers while complementing our existing thermal and renewable assets,' Mathai added. King offers blessing to mindfulness walks and breath yoga at Highgrove

The King has given his blessing to mindfulness walks and breathwork on yoga mats at his Highgrove residence. Beginning in April, the public will be able to enjoy these holistic workshops at the monarch's estate in Gloucestershire. In an email advertising the new sessions, titled Breathe Deeply at Highgrove, it was announced that Halen Breathwork – which specialises in breathwork and meditation techniques – would be running the event. The ' mindfulness event', being held on Sunday April 27, will allow guests to 'explore the science of breathwork and discover its mental and physical benefits', which include improved sleep and reduced stress. The monarch, 76, has long been a supporter of holistic medicine and has been advised on his health for many years by Dr Issac Mathai, who operates on holistic principles and runs the Soukya resort in Bangalore, to which Their Majesties are regular visitors. Dr Mathai said in 2023 that he does 'medical consultations' with the King and Queen a few times a year, either in London or they visit him in Bangalore. 'We interact and do what is necessary to maintain their health and wellness,' the doctor explained. Previously, alternative wellness therapies have been on offer at the King's Scottish stately home as part of a fund-raising charity weekend. Chinese meditation, journaling and yoga were among the practices on offer at Dumfries House, costing £500 a head. The new workshop at Highgrove Gardens, by contrast, will cost £125 per person and will last for half a day. The advertisement suggested that it would 'help bring harmony between the mind and body'.
