Matheus Cunha will have a better Premier League season than an 'under pressure' Florian Wirtz, Ian Ladyman predicts on latest Whistleblowers podcast

Manchester United new boy Matheus Cunha will outshine Liverpool 's record-breaking transfer Florian Wirtz in the Premier League next season, Ian Ladyman has claimed on the latest episode of the Mail's Whistleblowers podcast. Discussing which of the new creative players joining top clubs - Ryan Cherki, Matheus Cunha and Florian Wirtz - will make the biggest impact, the Mail's Football Editor opted for the Brazilian due to his vast Premier League experience. Matheus Cunha, 26, joined the Red Devils for £62.5 million, £53.5 million less than Liverpool paid for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz, 22. Whistleblowers is the Mail's brand-new football podcast hosted by Ladyman, Mark Clattenburg and broadcaster Gordon Smart. 'Cunha is the only one with any Premier League experience', Ladyman told the podcast. 'It should be easier for him to hit the ground running, even though he's playing for a poor Manchester United side. 'I think Wirtz is going to find the first two or so months difficult. He's going to be kicked a little bit. 'He's going to be put under pressure on the ball in a way that he's not used to in the Bundesliga. 'It's a quicker type of football in the Premier League – it's going to be harder for him.' Cunha scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists in 33 Premier League appearances for Wolves during the 2024-25 season. Former referee Mark Clattenburg disagreed with his co-host, arguing that the reduced pressure on Wirtz as a 'flair player' at an already established side will help his form. He also rejected Ladyman's argument that the Premier League is much more physical, drawing from his decades of experience refereeing in the division. Clattenburg said: 'Wirtz, I would definitely say, will have the biggest impact. He's exciting on the eye and is going into a good team. 'If you're going to come to England from any other European league, then Germany is very similar. 'When I refereed German teams, they're very physical and strong. Wirtz would have been kicked in the Bundesliga as well. Any player that comes from the Bundesliga can quickly adapt. Mark Clattenburg: 'If you're going to come to England from any other European league, then Germany is very similar.' Listen here 'Also, modern referees protect these types of skilful players more than they used to.' Putting the cat amongst the pigeons, Gordon Smart backed Cherki to take the league by storm. Coming from Lyon with a reputation as a mazey dribbler, Manchester City secured the 21-year-old French international for a meagre £34 million. Cherki scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances during the 2024-25 season. 'I think Cherki is going to do brilliantly', Gordon said. 'Watching him in the Club World Cup, there's just something about him.'

Man Utd make contact over Ekitike transfer as deal agreed after Onana decision

Manchester United's summer transfer window started with a bang but there've been no confirmed arrivals since Matheus Cunha was announced by the Red Devils exactly one month ago After June faded fast, Manchester United fans will be hoping for a much busier July as we enter the middle portion of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils started last month by signing Matheus Cunha in a £62.5million deal but failed to do any further business. It wasn't for the want of trying, though, as Ruben Amorim's side have seen two bids for Bryan Mbeumo rejected. United's second offer totalled £63m including add-ons but Brentford are demanding that amount up front, as they believe that Mbeumo should cost just as much as Cunha. ‌ Talks between the Red Devils and Brentford are continuing, with the player keen on the move after snubbing interest from Tottenham. It's evident that Amorim is prioritising his attack this summer both in terms of incomings and departures. ‌ Four forwards - Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony - aren't part of his long-term plans while there's also been noise surrounding the future of Rasmus Hojlund. Should United manage to sell him, a striker could be next on the club's wish-list. Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford. United make contact over Ekitike Manchester United are reportedly the only club to have made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt to register their interest in signing Hugo Ekitike this summer. Ekitike, 23, has been linked with moves to Liverpool and Chelsea but it appears that United are more serious about recruiting the French striker. German outlet Bild report that the Red Devils are alone in contacting Frankfurt. But they note that the situation could change if Liverpool sell Darwin Nunez to Napoli. ‌ Youngster set for scholarship deal Manchester United are said to have fended off interest from top European clubs to secure the future of 16-year-old prospect Jayden Ngwashi. The Manchester Evening News report that the highly-rated centre-back is set to sign a scholarship this week and commit his future to United. Ngwashi made his league debut for United's under-18s in March and broke into the under-21 squad only a few weeks later. The ball-playing defender also represents England at youth level. ‌ Saudi club opt for Onana alternative Saudi Arabian side Neom are set to sign goalkeeper Marcin Bulka from Nice after Andre Onana made it clear that he wants to stay at Manchester United. Onana, 29, was linked with a move away following another shaky season between the sticks. But French outlet Foot Mercato report that Poland international Bulka has chosen to join Neom and that the two clubs have agreed a fee. Sunderland had also reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 side but are set to miss out.

Man Utd Mustn't Waste Time On Pursuit Of Brentford Attacker

WOLVERHAMPTON, ENGLAND - MAY 25: Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford during the Premier League match between ... More Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Brentford FC at Molineux on May 25, 2025 in Wolverhampton, England. (Photo by) Manchester United had a plan for the early stage of the summer transfer window. The Old Trafford outfit moved quickly to secure the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, upgrading its attack after a dismal 2024/25 season which saw Ruben Amorim's team struggle badly for firepower in the final third. Bryan Mbeumo was meant to be the next part of that plan. The Cameroonian attacker was identified as the perfect addition to take Manchester United's forward line to the next level, and with good reason. Mbeumo found the back of the net 20 times in the Premier League last season, forging a strong understanding with Yoane Wissa for Brentford. He is ready to take the next step in his career. (Photo by Nick Potts/PA Images via Getty Images) United has reportedly lodged more than one offer to sign Mbuemo with the latest reporting stating a bid of over $70m was made. Brentford, however, is digging its heels in over the valuation of its prize asset. With Tottenham Hotspur also believed to be interested, the London club wants a bidding war to hike up the price even higher. 'He had a fantastic season,' said Brentford director of football Phil Giles when asked about the interest in Mbeumo. 'We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay.' There's no doubting Mbeumo would be a strong signing for Manchester United, but this is a team with far too much rebuilding to do this summer to waste too much time on the pursuit of a single player. If a deal can't be struck for the 25-year-old at the right price, United has a duty to move on to alternative targets. HONG KONG, CHINA - MAY 30: Manchester Unite head coach Ruben Amorim in action after the postseason ... More friendly match between Manchester United and Hong Kong at Hong Kong Stadium on May 30, 2025 in Hong Kong, China. (Photo by Qin Zhicheng/VCG via Getty Images) Amorim is under pressure to mould Manchester United in his own image. He struggled to communicate his ideas and methods to a group of players assembled by Erik ten Hag and so it's crucial the Portuguese coach finds players capable of playing his style of play, and perhaps most importantly in his 3-4-3 formation which so many United players failed to adapt to last season. This is a pivotal summer in the modern history of Manchester United. Last season was the worst suffered by the club in the Premier League. Not even a run to the final of the Europa League could mask just how bad the campaign was a whole was. Mbeumo could help fix things, but so too could a number of other players. The clock is ticking at Old Trafford.
