Judge Mathis Says Kanye West's Presence At Diddy's Trial 'Creates Drama'
Source: Judge Greg Mathis has been a TV judge for most of his career, but he's been giving his legal opinion as the weeks wane on in Diddy's sex trafficking trial. However, in a recent interview with TMZ, he took off his attorney hat and focused more on the press surrounding the high-profile case, specifically Kanye West, who appeared at the courthouse last week to support him. 'I think it creates drama,' Mathis said concerning Ye's presence. 'More drama than we've seen already. So that's my assessment. I'm not sure whether that was intentional or to create drama, or whether he's there to comfort or support a friend, which I think is fine.' Aside from Ye, Mathis also touched on those family and friends closest to Diddy who have been criticized for publicly defending him, including his kids, who have sat in for most of the court days as his alleged victims recount their abuse. Mathis says that public support is admirable, but behind closed doors, they should be honest with him about all the alleged mistakes he's made and criticize him. 'You should be there for your friend to comfort him. Even though he has done wrong,' he added. 'He's done some heinous crimes, assaults against these women. But if I were a family member, I would be there to comfort him, not defend him, not stick up for, what he's done. I would condemn him in private and support him in public.' Just a few weeks ago, the no-nonsense former Detroit-area district court judge spoke about the case on The Mathis Verdict podcast, which he shares with his son Amir, to focus on the legal proceedings. He says that based on the testimony and videos he's seen, he thinks he was involved in at least two cases of assault and battery against women, and also was somehow connected to the bombing of Kid Cudi's car. 'If you want to sum it up, if it were a state crime that Judge Mathis has observed testimony and evidence and transcripts, what would I give him? Five to 10 [years],' he said. Judge Greg Mathis Hypothetically Sentences Sean 'Diddy' Combs Based On Trial So Far
Judge Greg Mathis and son Amir continue to dissect the Sean 'Diddy' Combs sex trafficking trial on their Mathis Verdict podcast, where Mathis recently offered up his hypothetical sentencing of the fallen mogul based on what has been presented in court thus far. The television veteran is first sure to acknowledge that the prosecution has yet to prove without a doubt the sex trafficking and racketeering charges. However, he does believe they have proven Combs guilty of the third charge, which is transportation to engage in prostitution. 'Yes, that is a federal crime. A very low-level federal crime, which he should be guilty of and sentenced to less than one year. On the other hand, you got some state crimes and the statute of limitations has expired, and that's why they aren't charging him in state court.' Judge Mathis then hypothesized that the state charges were valid, and offered his thoughts on how Diddy would be sentenced under those circumstances. 'Let me say what I think has been proven,' Mathis says in the clip. 'The things I've heard, the testimony, the video I've observed, I'm convinced that he was involved in at least two cases of assault and battery against women.' He later adds that he believes Diddy was involved in Kid Cudi's car being set ablaze, to which Cudi testified in court. 'To that extent, I'd have to give him a couple or a few years,' Mathis determined. And on the multiple assaults and batteries against women, I'd have to give him a few more on that. If you want to sum it up, If it were a state crime, Judge Mathis has observed the evidence and the testimony and the transcripts. What would I give him? Five to ten.' 'Which is not letting him off on anything,' Mathis' son, Amir, added. 'That's a tough sentence, In my opinion.' Check out the clip below. St. Petersburg explores program to make downtown cleaner, safer
The St. Petersburg City Council discussed ways to make downtown cleaner and safer Thursday after residents, business owners and employees pleaded last week for help following the fatal stabbing by a restaurant owner of a man who police said attacked him. City and downtown officials pitched a program to clean sidewalks and remove graffiti, pay safety ambassadors to collaborate with local police and build relationships with people living on the street to better connect them with mental health and housing resources. 'I know there's a speculation that somehow this is an anti-homeless initiative, but it absolutely is not,' said Jason Mathis, CEO of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, a private nonprofit company that supports urban redevelopment projects. 'Your housing status doesn't make it that you want a less clean or more clean downtown.' The so-called Clean & Safe Program is not intended to discourage homeless people from being downtown, but instead help them find resources and housing options, Mathis said. Mathis proposed a pilot project focused on high traffic areas such as downtown, Beach Drive, Central Avenue and Williams Park. It would include creating a commercial improvement district, in which businesses would pay a franchise fee to the city that would be passed along to a nonprofit to run the program. Mathis said the downtown partnership would not compete for the job. If businesses aren't on board with how to pay for the effort, Mathis said the program could also be funded through parking revenue, private donations or using Community Redevelopment Area funds if the county agrees. City Administrator Rob Gerdes said parking meters could be expanded to the Edge District. Multiple residents, business owners and employees described problems with cleanliness and safety in the downtown area at last week's council meeting. Some residents said they were harassed or threatened while working or walking around downtown. 'We see it everyday — individuals living on the streets or in temporary hotel housing exhibiting behaviors that represent deep, unmet needs," Karen Carmichael, the Downtown Neighborhood Association's president, said at the June 5 meeting. 'This is no longer a housing issue, it's a public safety issue.' The address of the man who was stabbed and killed last month is listed as a room in the Williams Park Hotel on First Avenue North, according to a police report from a separate incident on the same day. In March, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a ban on homeless people sleeping in public spaces. This includes park benches, sidewalks and streets. The law also lets business owners and residents sue counties or municipalities for failing to comply. Residents at the June 5 meeting expressed concern with the city's enforcement the new law, as well as concerns with the city's compliance. Residents also circulated a petition, now with more than 400 signatures, in support of the Clean & Safe proposal. Other residents at Thursday's general City Council meeting at 1 p.m. expressed concerns that the Clean & Safe program would exclude or criminalize people who are homeless from the St. Petersburg community. At a Thursday morning committee meeting, council member Brandi Gabbard said the proposed program should primarily focus on connecting homeless populations with available resources. 'The cry for us to do more is really to help individuals who need help and cannot get those services,' Gabbard said. 'If we're not actually helping individuals and creating this in a way that it has [an] outspread to the entire city and a benefit, then I don't even want to continue this conversion.' Council members also discussed how the program would work with the existing CALL program, where social workers respond to mental health crises or homelessness complaints. The St. Petersburg Police Department also has a unit to assist the homeless in its patrol response division. Council member Richie Floyd said there's still 'a lot to shore up' with the Clean & Safe proposal. 'So many times I see what the issue with homeless people and transient populations are is that they just get shuffled around the city,' he said. 'We can't make this an effort to do that regardless of who's in charge of the outreach and we have to think at a higher level.' The council agreed Thursday to hold another meeting to further discuss the topic.

GVSU holds fourth annual Black Boys & Men National Symposium
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Valley State University is holding its fourth annual Black Boys and Men National Symposium Wednesday through Friday. Wednesday's event was held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Grand Rapids. Thursday's and Friday's events will be at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Judge Greg Mathis gave a keynote address on Wednesday and spoke with the media beforehand. He addressed his experiences and how they played a pivotal role in shaping the message that he wanted to share with the audience. 'This is an issue that is dear to me,' Mathis said. 'Having been a street youth, in and out of juvenile and tried for carrying a gun as an adult at age 17, I know the life that many of our young people are subjected to living in poverty. And having their education fail them. And so, I think I am uniquely qualified to talk about this.' GVSU to hold third Black Boys and Men Symposium Mathis, a Detroit native, said a piece of his message was focused on keeping children on the best path possible, regardless of the challenges they may face in the household. 'We can't let the child fall through the cracks,' he said. 'That's one of the things I've always advocated for and that is we must save the child even if we can't save the household. And that's part of what we're going to be discussing. Solutions to keep a child from falling through the cracks. And particularly as it relates to black boys and black men who have an additional burden based on the stereotypes that have been perpetuated that we are typically angry criminals.' Mathis noted his professional challenges, such as running for judge, going to law school and becoming a lawyer as opportunities he used to his benefit, rather than being deterred. 'My obstacles, each one of them I flipped,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
