'Red Sonja' First Trailer With Matilda Lutz As Titular Character Released
It's taken a long time for a new Red Sonja movie to get off the ground following the release of the first adaptation in 1985 at a time when Conan the Barbarian was a major hit. Now, forty years later, the first official trailer has been released for the new Red Sonja movie coming later this year. Matilda Lutz stars as the titular character in the movie which was directed by M. J. Bassett and written by Tasha Huo. In addition to Lutz, the cast includes Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Veronica Ferres, Katrina Durden, and Manal El Feitury. Additionally, other cast members include Rhona Mitra, Kate Nichols, and Danica Davis. Production on the film can be traced back as far as 2008 when the project first entered development. After many changes over the years, however, the current iteration didn't come together until 2021 when Huo was tapped to write the screenplay. Here's the full official trailer for Red Sonja that's been released online: Obviously this movie has faced a rather long development and production period, one which will adapt a story based on the Dynamite Entertainment version of Red Sonja. The popular comic book character also has ties in the Marvel Comics world, though after her Marvel iteration was killed off, the Dynamite version replaced her. It's definitely exciting to see a new adaptation of the character finally get off the ground. Especially since this new cinematic take will be R-rated and it appears to be faithful to the comic book source material in addition to the previous film adaptation. Hopefully the film, which will be released by Samuel Goldwyn Films, will live up to the expectations held by fans of the character and the surrounding franchise. Fans will be able to see Red Sonja when the long-anticipated sword and sorcery film hits theaters on August 15, 2025. ‘Red Sonja' Trailer Hits The Mark With Blood Soaked Reboot
The debut trailer for Red Sonja has hit the web, bringing Marvel Comics and Dynamite Entertainment's renowned heroine dressed in her signature chainmail bikini to life. Played by Matilda Lutz ( Revenge, Rings ), the movie looks to be a sentimental callback to the cinematic action style that populated the period of the early to mid-aughts. The two-minute footage introduces the iconic sword-wielding heroine as she responds to a mysterious, disembodied voice warning that 'the Earth is bleeding'. Seeking the power to confront those responsible, presumably for revenge, Sonja embarks on a journey that quickly escalates into high-stakes conflict. The trailer goes on to showcase a series of glimpses into a world of decadence and oppression, cutting between the imposing elites and our titular heroine's acts of defiance, liberating prisoners and executing swift combat manoeuvres. Her mission takes a turn when she's captured and cast into a brutal gladiatorial arena. From there, the tone shifts into a full-scale rebellion as Sonja leads a resistance against the ruling class across both arena and battlefield. Though the trailer already seems to depict all of the narrative beats in a blow-by-blow fashion, fans can certainly still look forward to what promises to be a good nostalgic time watching the fantasy film helmed by action director M.J. Bassett ( Solomon Kane ). The original movie starring Brigette Nielsen ( Rocky IV ) was released in 1985, with Arnold Schwarzenegger ( Terminator ), Sandahl Bergman ( Conan the Barbarian ), Paul Smith ( Midnight Express ), and Ronald Lacey ( Raiders of the Lost Ark ) in supporting roles. Matilda Lutz in Red Sonja (2025) Bassett confessed her enthusiasm for the character and the forthcoming film, stating in a press release: 'I've wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager—she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision.' Alongside Lutz, who replaced Hannah John-Kamen as the titular warrior, the Red Sonja reboot also features Martyn Ford ( Fast & Furious 9 ), Robert Sheehan ( The Umbrella Academy ), Wallis Day ( Batwoman ), Michael Bisping ( Den of Thieves ), Philip Winchester ( Strike Back ), Trevor Eve ( Waking the Dead ), Luca Pasqualino ( The Musketeers ), and Rhona Mitra ( Underworld: Rise of the Lycans ). Red Sonja is scheduled for a theatrical release on 15 August 2025, with a digital release on 29 August 2025. Matilda Lutz plays Red Sonja, inspired by the Marvel Comics/Dynamo character and the heroine of Robert E. Howard's novels. As a child, Sonja survives the massacre of her tribe and family. Now, Sonja finds herself in an arena battling other prisoners and a minotaur for the entertainment of a king and the crowd. She also leads soldiers in battle. Sonja does all of this while wearing a silver chest and loin piece. At the end of the trailer, she questions what protection it will provide. The armorer confirms none, but it is for the amusement of the crowd. Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Martyn Ford, Michael Bisping, Phillip Winchester and Trevor Eve also star. MJ Bassett directs. Red Sonja will have a panel in Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 24 at 5:30 p.m. PDT. Previous versions of Red Sonja have been in development, including one to star Rose McGowan. Bryan Singer and Joey Soloway were attached to direct at one point. Howard's character existed in the same universe as his Conan the Barbarian. Brigitte Nielsen played Sonja in a 1985 adaptation, costarring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but playing Kalidor instead of Conan.

Millennium Media has finally released the first trailer for Matilda Lutz's live-action Red Sonja movie! A trailer was supposed to initially drop a couple of years ago at Comic-Con, but then never did. This movie is obviously going through some behind the scenes issues because it's taken so damn long just to get to the point of releasing a trailer. I've been very curious about this movie, and now we know what we're in for, and well… I guess it's what I should've expected. It looks like there will be some brutal and bloody action sequences, though! In the film, 'Enslaved by an evil tyrant who wishes to destroy her people, barbarian huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Dragan The Magnificent and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.' The movie was developed by director M.J. Bassett ( Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation ). The movie also stars Wallis Day ( Sex/Life, Batwoman ) as Annisia and Robert Sheehan ( The Umbrella Academy, Misfits ) as Draygan. Additonal cast members include Michael Bisping ( xXx: Return of Xander Cage ) as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak ( F9: The Fast Saga, Final Score ), Eliza Matengu ( Thor: Love and Thunder ) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury ( Code Red ) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden ( Doctor Strange, Shadow and Bone ) as Saevus. The beloved She-Devil With a Sword's story began in comics in 1973, and now 50 years later she remains the greatest sword-and-sorcery female heroine of them all! She's hacked and slashed her way into the hearts of fantasy and comics fans all around the world. The movie will be released in theaters on August 15th and on digital platforms August 29th!
