Jordan Spieth Makes Final Decision on The Open Amid Injury

Jordan Spieth Makes Final Decision on The Open Amid Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golf fans know what it means when mid-July approaches. The Open Championship is just around the corner. The historic event, first played in 1860, is the oldest tournament in the sport and will return July 17-20 at Royal Portrush for its 153rd edition. Advertisement Among the familiar faces expected to compete is three-time major winner Jordan Spieth. Spieth won The Open in 2017, defeating Matt Kuchar by three strokes, but he hasn't added another major title to his résumé since. After withdrawing from this weekend's Scottish Open due to an injury concern, Spieth provided a quick update on his status for The Open following neck spasms that caused some uncertainty. 'I'm good. It was a weird neck spasm thing that just came up,' Spieth said. 'I've been back to full strength getting ready for The Open Championship. I have no restrictions, which is great.' Spieth's last win came in 2022 at the RBC Heritage, where he beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff. In 2025, he has played in all three major championships and made the cut twice, finishing tied for 14th at the Masters and tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Advertisement He's still searching for the consistency that once made him a dominant figure on tour. A strong showing at Royal Portrush could help reignite his confidence. The only exception was in 2020 when the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With a clean bill of health and momentum on his side, Spieth will look to recapture some of the magic that made him a major champion and contend once again at one of golf's most prestigious stages. Matt Kuchar climbs into contention at John Deere Classic after a Saturday 67 at TPC Deere Run

Saturday's third round of the John Deere Classic featured a wild, 10-way tie for the lead at one point. But making a charge and getting into contention is a name we haven't heard much of in 2025. That would be one Matt Kuchar. Kooch fired a 4-under 67 in windy conditions Saturday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. He walked off the golf course at 11 under, and at the time, was just a shot off the lead. Kuchar has made nine of 11 cuts in 2025 but he doesn't have a top-10 finish. His best outing was a tie for 18th in April at the Valero Texas Open. He does have a T25 at the Memorial but the rest of his finishes this season are T43, T56, T42, MC, T32, T56, T53 and a MC last week in Detroit. Safe to say, this week has energized him. "Listen, I still feel like a kid. I still get excited to come to those tournaments," he said. "One of the unique things about the game of golf is every week we all start at even par, we all have a chance of doing something great." He then made a comparison to another professional sport. "I think if you happen to be a professional baseball player and your team starts 10-40, it would be tough to keep going, but golf gives that you hope every week that you show up and you got a chance to do something great," he explained. "So I show up here excited. I show up hoping to do something great this week." Kuchar, 47, is a nine-time winner on the PGA Tour but hasn't won since the 2019 Sony Open in Hawaii. This week marks his 574th start on the circuit. He started the week 135th in the FedEx Cup standings so a strong finish this week would be a huge boost.

It is a lot more turnover for a field than normal. The PGA Tour had already announced on Sunday that Ben Martin, Brandon Matthews, K.H. Lee and Brian Campbell were among the golfers who withdrew from the upcoming tournament over the weekend. Advertisement With the U.S. Open a little more than one week away, some golfers may be opting for additional rest ahead of the upcoming major. Additionally, Scottie Scheffler is not in the field, fresh off his win at the Memorial Tournament. Instead, Scheffler will turn his focus to attempting to win his second straight major. The RBC Canadian Open still has plenty of star power in the field of golfers. Rory McIlroy is a heavy favorite to win the RBC Canadian Open at +450, per DraftKings. Ludvig Aberg is a distant second in the odds at +1400. $60 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws From RBC Canadian Open at Last Minute

$60 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws From RBC Canadian Open at Last Minute originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The days leading up to the RBC Canadian Open, which tees off on Thursday, have been very chaotic. Multiple golfers have decided to withdraw from the tournament, and PGA Tour is scrambling to fill their spots. By Wednesday, even more players had already exited. Advertisement One of them is veteran Matt Kuchar, with $60 million in career earnings. He was active in the Memorial Tournament, where Scottie Scheffler lifted his 16th title. Kuchar finished T25 with a score of 4-over par. Kuchar hasn't stated any reason for his withdrawal. In his place, Dylan Wu, with $3 million in career earnings, was put in to play. Theegala is suffering from a neck injury, which caused his withdrawal from the PGA Championship and the Truist Championship. In their place, Taylor Montgomery and Cameron Champ have been added to the tournament. Advertisement The biggest name going into this event is Rory McIlroy. He last appeared at the PGA Championship, where he had a disappointing performance, finishing T47 with a score of 3‑over par. While playing at Quail Hollow, he skipped speaking to the media for all four days, drawing significant backlash. He also chose to skip the Memorial Tournament, which upset his mentor, Jack Nicklaus. 'I really don't know why Rory didn't talk to me,' Nicklaus said. 'I can't answer that question. There's nothing I can answer. I know he has to make a schedule that works for him and what he has to do. And I understand, because I had to do the same thing.' Advertisement McIlroy finally announced his decision to speak to the media at the RBC Canadian Open on Wednesday.
