Matter Aera launched at ₹1.93 lakh in Delhi. Check the geared EV motorbike out
₹1.93 lakh in Delhi. Check the geared EV motorbike out data-item-target-url=/auto/electric-vehicles/ data-item-story-segment=Electric> The Matter Aera is a geared EV motorbike which gets three different riding modes. Check Offers Matter, an Indian electric mobility startup, has introduced its Aera electric motorcycle in Delhi, marking the regional launch of what the company claims is India's first geared electric two-wheeler. Priced at ₹ 1,93,826 (ex-showroom), the Aera is now available for booking via the company's official website. This launch comes at a time when Delhi, one of the country's most polluted and densely populated cities, continues to witness rising interest in electric mobility. The Aera's entry is being positioned as a blend of performance, tech, and efficiency in a segment that typically relies on simplified automatic drivetrains. Matter Aera: Manual gearbox in an electric format A key feature of the Aera is its 'HyperShift' transmission, a 4-speed manual gearbox developed in-house. This system is paired with three ride modes, allowing for a total of 12 gear-mode combinations. While most electric two-wheelers offer a twist-and-go experience, Matter is betting on the idea that manual control can add a layer of rider engagement that's largely missing in the EV space. Matter Aera 5000+ real-world range tested in Sport mode: Here's how far it went
The Matter Aera 5000+ comes with a battery capacity of 5 kWh (Tej Patel for HT Auto) Check Offers The Matter Aera 5000+ represents a new direction for electric motorcycles in India, with its manual gearbox and electric powertrain. Matter claims it has a range of 125 km in City mode, but we wanted to find out how it would perform when ridden in a sportier way. We did our ride in city traffic in Ahmedabad, where the bike was kept in Sport mode the entire time and we used aggressive throttle inputs, which is the ultimate test for any EV's efficiency. Matter Aera 5000+: Test setup: Route, mode, and riding style Our ride took place in Ahmedabad, navigating a mix of city traffic ranging from free-flowing stretches to signal-heavy bottlenecks. . The bike started with 98 per cent charge and an odometer reading of 891.2 km. For the entire duration, it was kept in Sport mode and ridden with aggressive throttle inputs, to simulate how a performance-focused rider might actually use it. Also Read : Matter Motor targets mid-segment riders with EV motorcycles and a tiered product strategy Matter Aera 5000+: Real world range At the end of the ride, the battery percentage dropped to 61 per cent, and the odometer showed 923.7 km, meaning we covered 32.5 km using 37 per cent of the battery. Extrapolating this, the estimated real-world range in Sport mode works out to approximately 88 km on a full charge. Matter Aera 5000+: Real world energy efficiency With the Matter Aera 5000+ housing a 5 kWh battery pack, the real-world energy consumption during our test worked out to around 17.6 km/kWh. While this is lower than the expected efficiency in City mode, it is in line with expectations for a performance-focused ride in Sport mode. Also watch: Matter Aera 5000+ review: Can India's first geared electric motorcycle be a gamechanger? How it compares to claimed figures Matter officially claims 110 km of range in Sport mode for the Aera 5000+, presumably using moderate throttle inputs and standard test cycles. Our estimate of 88 km is a more aggressive, real-world riding condition. The energy use and range will depend on terrain, rider weight, and traffic, but the Aera still is a viable option for everyday commutes, even for riders who like spirited riding. Despite the heavy throttle use and constant riding in Sport mode, the Matter Aera 5000+ delivered a real-world range of 88 km, which is over 80 per cent of its claimed figure. Matter Motor plans new e-bikes positioned against 125cc–150cc rivals, eyes exports by 2026
Ahmedabad-based electric vehicle company Matter Motor is taking a unique approach in India's growing EV market by combining the familiar feel of petrol motorcycles with the electric technology. While electric scooters are becoming popular and roughly make up more than 6% of two-wheeler sales, electric motorcycles still haven't caught on in a big way. Battery-powered motorcycles account for less than 1% of the market. That's where Matter's Aera comes in. In a conversation with TOI Auto, Matter Motor founder Mohal Lalbhai spoke about the thought process behind India's first geared electric motorcycle . He discussed why the company chose to bring back the gear experience in its flagship Aera model, how the brand plans to tap into the mass market, and what makes their EV approach different. 'When we started back in 2019, we really wanted to come down to what it meant for a motorcycle user,' Lalbhai explained, highlighting that traditional motorcycle riders, especially in rural areas, need precise control over power and torque. 'The gearbox came up as one of the most essential things,' he added, noting that on uneven roads and off-road terrains, gearboxes give better traction and responsiveness. This approach contrasts sharply with the growing yet saturated electric scooter segment, which already stands at about 6% penetration in the two‑wheeler market. According to Lalbhai, 'the motorcycle segment is going to grow' as manufacturers begin launching electric bikes. He outlined Matter's expansive roadmap, confirming that the Aera (200cc equivalent) will be followed by 150cc and 125cc models, though the latter may use different technical platforms. 'And for us, the segments that we are seeing going to grow are between 125 to 200 cc,' Lalbhai noted. Pricing remains a common barrier in the EV space, but Matter has tackled this with a bold strategy: full vertical integration. The Aera is priced at Rs 1.94 lakh, ex-showroom, which Lalbhai characterizes as 'quite competitive' when compared to petrol motorcycles of similar displacement. He explained that by avoiding external IP licensing - 'we didn't want to keep paying money towards IP… the biggest leakages of margins' - Matter develops its own hardware, electronics, and software, keeping costs under control. In terms of manufacturing, Lalbhai confirmed that the Aera is '100 percent made in India' except for battery cells, magnets, and semiconductor chips. However, this local thrust includes precise component assembly, electronics integration, and final manufacturing. Matter also holds over 375 patent applications, with more than 70 grants, covering gearbox design, liquid cooling, proprietary charging systems, and more. As for sales and customer convenience, Matter is building a three-pronged network: service, sales, and spares. Importantly, the company is integrating predictive maintenance tools into the Aera. 'We actually get to see how the bike is performing… If something is going wrong, we would be able to proactively reach out to the customer,' Lalbhai shared. Looking beyond India, the company plans to export to Southeast Asia, Africa, and Eastern–Southern Europe next year, though India remains its focus for now. On expanding product lines, Lalbhai said they plan to explore delivery and cargo models around the 125cc equivalent segment in two to three years, aligning with growing demand for light commercial EVs. Accessories and apparel are also on the radar, with plans to support riders with protective gear and bike-specific clothing by early next year. But the immediate focus, Lalbhai said, remains on its core motorcycles and expanding the Aera's presence.
