Illini Solar Car team wins national competition
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Drivers and engineers from the University of Illinois' Illini Solar Car team came in first place at an event during this year's Formula Sun Grand Prix in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
They took home gold in the single occupant vehicle class by driving the most laps of all the nation's collegiate teams. The team drove 223 laps — or 703 miles — continuously.

Illini Solar's car ran on the power of the sun alone.
'This whole competition — with every team that takes part in the competition — is proving that solar power is capable of pushing engineering to the limits,' team president Matthew Adler said. 'I feel like we've proven that we can drive this car 1,600 miles across the country. Like, there's no reason that solar power can't continue to be a part of our everyday life in the future.'
Adler said he's looking forward to this upcoming academic year, when Illini Solar will build and unveil the next generation of its solar-powered car.
