Colorado drunk driver receives life sentence after killing U.S. veteran father of four at gas station
In a Douglas County courtroom, loved ones of Lt. Col. Matthew Anderson delivered heartbreaking impact statements, asking the judge to deliver a harsh sentence for the man who killed their husband and father. The U.S. Air Force colonel and father of four was killed by a drunk driver in 2024 while their family was stopped at a gas station. Lt. Col. Mike Anderson Anderson family In April, the jury found Paul Stephenson guilty of first-degree murder and driving under the influence, among other charges. On Thursday, a judge sentenced Stephenson to life in prison, plus 92 years. In court, Anderson's wife said she and her four children were traumatized by the violent and preventable death of their father. She spoke about how she will never get to grow old with Matt, how he won't be there for his children's weddings and graduations, and how her youngest won't have any memories of him. Other family members said Anderson was a family man, an Air Force pilot and former Division I athlete who will be deeply missed. "He was our baby brother, but so much more," said Jill Anderson, the military veteran's sister. Jill described her brother as a perfect child and someone everyone looked up to. "Justice, that's all we have. That's all we have to give us some kind of closure," Jill said. For the first time, images released by the district attorney's office showed the family the day Matt Anderson was killed -- Aug. 4, 2024. The family of six had enjoyed a day at the Douglas County Fair before stopping at at 7-Eleven. While Matt gassed the car up and his wife went inside to get popsicles, prosecutors say Paul Stephenson veered across four lanes of traffic. Video from 7-Eleven shows the horrifying moment his truck crashes into the Anderson family car, Matt's wife witnessing the crash from outside their family's vehicle. The couple's children were injured, and Matt Anderson was killed. "When Matt was murdered by that guy, his four kids, they made it through it," said Wayne Anderson, Matt's father, who called their survival miraculous. Tyler Yowell, a Castle Rock Police Department investigator, got choked up when speaking about the case in court, recalling one of the children saying, "My daddy died. He can't play with me anymore." Prosecutors also showed the court body camera footage from officers on scene, depicting the chaos and pain of the family in the aftermath of the crash. "You need to pray for your soul, Paul," said Wayne Anderson, addressing the driver directly in court. At the time of the crash, Stephenson's blood alcohol content was 2.5 times the legal limit. He has a criminal history of domestic violence and prior DUIs. Prosecutors say he drank a pint of Fireball whiskey and two Bud Lights, and was on his way to the liquor store when he struck the family car. They say he took no accountability and was more worried about damage to his truck when questioned by officers. In court, Stephenson said it wasn't a fair trial and, "I'm sorry we're all here." The judge said she was "baffled" by his lack of empathy and accountability before she handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 92 years. Matt's family hopes his loss -- and Stephenson's sentence -- will deter people from drinking and driving. "It's a real relief to hear the judge, how she was affected by this whole thing," Mike's father said. "I just feel better that today is kind of done and can get on with it. It won't be easy for any of us. There's a lot of us involved."

More evidence of that has played out this week, with the Parkhead club set to lose a highly-rated youngster for a cut-price fee due to the player wanting regular football, reports claim. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Matthew Anderson in action for Scotland Under-21s Credit: Willie Vass Matthew Anderson joined the Celtic academy setup from Motherwell at the age of 13 and signed his first professional contract with the club in 2020 at the age of 16. But now 21, Anderson is yet to make his mark on the senior squad and has had to spend time out on loan to gain minutes on the pitch. However, on his return he would have been hoping to push for a place in Brendan Rodgers' thoughts. But it seems he isn't int he manager's plans and now, according to the Glasgow Times, he will sign for Belgian second division outfit KV Kortrijk. Two years ago, Anderson was loaned out to one of Celtic's feeder clubs, Admira Wacker of Austria. He's remained there since and racked up a healthy number of minutes in the second tier of Austrian football. He made 21 appearances in 2023/24, playing at left-back or left-midfield. And the Hoops kid played 22 league games this past season as the team challenged for promotion, more often than not playing wide on the left of midfield. He had originally came through the ranks as a defender and was given shirt number 63, the same digits worn by Kieran Tierney. But it's said the Scotland youth international has a desire for that first team football to continue and doesn't think he'll get that at Celtic, hence the decision to move on. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up It's reported that Anderson has signed a three-year deal with the ambitious Belgians, who are owned by Cardiff City chief Vincent Tan and are targeting a quick return to the top flight after being relegated last season. Stephen McManus, Anderson's coach when he was with the B team, previously predicted a bright future in football for the youngster. McManus, who is now a first team coach with the Hoops, said earlier this month in an interview with the Daily Record: "He's got a massive future in the game, absolutely massive. "He's a terrific boy with a brilliant family, and again, you can only stay with us, with the B team, for a couple of seasons. "Matthew outgrew the B team two years ago. That's why he's not played for the B team. "That's why the next stage of his development was to go out and loan." Celtic to sell star with 'massive future in the game' after transfer with huge sell-on fee struck
The Hoops are set to sell highly-rated youngster Matthew Anderson but have made sure they won't regret it if he kicks on Celtic are set to sell highly-rated youngster Matthew Anderson – but have reportedly demanded a huge sell-on fee in the deal in case his career skyrockets away from the club. Left-back Anderson has spent the last two years out on loan at Admira Wacker in Austria but, according to the Celtic Way, is now set to join KV Kortrjik in the Belgian second tier. It's claimed they've beaten off interest from Aberdeen and Hearts, as well Exeter City in England, Tolouse in France and Ried and Tirlo in Austria to land the 21-year-old who has thoroughly impressed in his two seasons out on loan. It's reported he's leaving for a 'minimal' fee – but that Celtic have covered themselves by including a 'significant' sell-on fee that will see them profit if he goes on to make his new club cash in the future. Anderson had previously been talked up as one of the academy's top prospects and while interest from the Premier League in his teenage years has wavered, there's a feeling he'll be able to kick on and become a Scotland player in the future. He hadn't played for the first-team but was highly rated by Brendan Rodgers although is currently some way short of competing with Kieran Tierney for the left-back berth at Parkhead – so the club believe a clean break sale to give him a fresh start elsewhere is the best option. Speaking exclusively to Record Sport, Stephen McManus, who coached Anderson with the Hoops B-team, predicted a massive future ahead for the youngster. He said: "He's got a massive future in the game, absolutely massive. He's a terrific boy with a brilliant family, and again, you can only stay with us, with the B team, for a couple of seasons. "Matthew outgrew the B team two years ago. That's why he's not played for the B team. That's why the next stage of his development was to go out and loan. "Some people make their debut at 16 and then go and play for the rest of their careers. Some people are 21, 20, they need to go a different route. That's fine. "But what you need to do is, when you get an opportunity, you need to try and become a football player, and that's what Matthew's done. "He's a terrific boy, terrific worker from a terrific family, and he'll be a top player."
