Cashmere Tech winger's magic marks milestone match
Lyle Matthysen celebrated his 250th appearance for Cashmere Technical with four goals in their 4-1 win over Coastal Spirit. PHOTO: CARL COZZONE/DUST MEDIA Cashmere Technical winger Lyle Matthysen celebrated his 250th appearance for the club in style, netting all four goals in a commanding 4-1 Chatham Cup win over Coastal Spirit on Sunday. Now, the 26-year-old hopes the result can ignite a turnaround in Tech's Southern League campaign. Currently sitting third on the ladder, Tech are six points adrift of league leaders Christchurch United and five behind Coastal Spirit in the race for the two National League qualification spots. 'It's what we need. (We) definitely need to start turning up and lifting our performances so we can book a top-two spot,' Matthysen said. 'Next week will be a tough game too (away at Dunedin City Royals) so we need to be firing.' He became just the third player to reach 250 appearances for Cashmere Technical, joining Tom Schwarz and Danny Knight. Matthysen said he never expected to reach the milestone when he debuted, but it eventually became a personal goal. 'As you get onto the first milestone of 50, 100, 200, things like that, you start thinking 'alright, I do want to push on and try and get up there with the older boys',' he said. 'I do love the club, been here for 10 or 11 years now, so I do want to strive on and do great things.' Sunday's cup win also saw Coastal Spirit suffer an early setback, with defender Jack Hale sent off just eight minutes into the match. They were also without first-choice goalkeeper Ellis Hare-Reid due to a head knock. Tech now progress to the third round of the knockout Chatham Cup, joining fellow Canterbury sides Ferrymead Bays and Christchurch United, who beat Selwyn United 4-1 and Nomads 2-0 respectively. This weekend, United looks to keep their spot at the top of the Southern League when they play Wanaka on Saturday, knowing Coastal could overtake them with a win in their game against Universities. Ferrymead Bays host Nomads on Saturday before Selwyn United travels to play Nelson Suburbs on Sunday. Southern League points Chch Utd 19; Coastal 18; Cash Tech 13; Nomads 13; Nelson 13; Ferrymead Bays 13; Dunedin 13; Wanaka 9; Universities 4; Selwyn 1

Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday. Image: Supplied Tributes continue to pour in for Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen, who passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the community. Matthysen was the station commander and head of crime prevention at several police stations in KwaZulu-Natal during his career. In 2023, he was appointed as the station commander of Pinetown SAPS. On Thursday, the community, Community Policing Forums (CPF), and Private security companies held a memorial drive from Kloof to Pinetown police station in memory of Matthysen. Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security said people came out in their numbers, which was a testament to the deep respect and admiration 'we held in our hearts' for Matthysen. 'He was the ultimate example of South Africa's finest, a true top cop whose integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice set him apart. Next Stay Close ✕ Aidan David, the chairperson of eThekwini District Police Board and Provincial Board treasurer, spoke of the memories he had of Matthysen, including the support he showed to the CPFs. David said wherever Matthysen's career had taken him, he always touched the lives of people and made them feel safe. According to him, Matthysen always supported the CPFs and believed that crime cannot be solved without the input from the community. David said that Matthysen left an indelible mark as one of the best station commanders that Isipingo SAPS has ever had, adding that he was an officer who never liked to be office-bound. 'He used to always sit at the back of the SAPS kombi with the door open, and he would make the young officers like Constable Donald Naidoo drive through the CBD of Isipingo and do patrols. Before the van could stop, if he saw a suspect breaking the law, he would spring out of that moving van and pounce on the suspects, and before they knew what happened, they would be apprehended by Brigadier Matthysen,' David recalled. David said that for the police officers patrolling with Matthysen, it was like an action scene from a movie. 'This kind of dedication and guts kept the people of Isipingo safe, and he really cleaned up our town of Isipingo and left us to take office with his promotion elsewhere,' David said. KZN shoot-out: Another business robbery suspect arrested
A second suspect linked to a business robbery in Caversham, KZN, on Thursday, has been arrested. Highway Mail reports that on Thursday, a shoot-out ensued during the pursuit of four suspects after the driver of the getaway vehicle lost control of the car on Campbell Road. According to Pinetown SAPS station commander, Brigadier Leon Matthysen, one suspect was arrested while the other three escaped. 'The suspects had stolen cellphones from patrons, which were later recovered by SAPS.' Yesterday, the Trio Task Team members were tracing the other suspects. 'Our members had a breakthrough when they received information as to where one of the suspects was spotted. They swiftly proceeded to the address and identified the suspect. ''His details matched the ones on the documents recovered last night (Thursday) inside the vehicle. The suspect also had some fresh bruises, which he sustained on Thursday night. The suspect was arrested and is detained at Pinetown SAPS.' Matthysen says cases of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition have been opened at the station. The station commander thanked everyone involved in the arrest of the suspects, including police, neighbourhood watch patrollers and private security companies.
