How On creates its spray-on running shoes

Can running shoes be made by a spray gun? That's the idea behind LightSpray, a new manufacturing technique created by Swiss sneaker company On. "It allows us to produce an upper material in a completely automated way," said Marc Maurer, On's former co-CEO who recently left the company. "A traditional product is touched by approximately 200 hands, which is very different here." The upper part of the shoe is formed as a robot sprays a synthetic material called polymer onto a rotating foot-shaped mold. The process takes about three minutes per shoe. The final product doesn't have seams or laces and fits like a sock. "What we want to be able to do is to bring it from a couple of thousand pairs to millions of pairs," said Maurer. The company announced this month that it is opening its first LightSpray factory in Zurich featuring four of the robots. Analysts said innovations like LightSpray have given On a competitive edge. So how does it work? Watch the video to learn more.

Lead program faces delays and slow spending, per report

Cleveland is still seeing persistently high rates of childhood lead poisoning six years after passing a landmark lead-safe housing law. Why it matters: Lead poisoning in Cleveland children remains nearly four times the national average, per Cleveland Clinic, and can result in irreversible cognitive and behavioral damage. The big picture: Councilwoman Rebecca Maurer — co-chair of the city's Lead Safe Advisory Board — argues in a new report that Cleveland's approach needs a reset. She says resources have spread too thin and legislative or administrative tweaks are required to direct spending toward the homes, neighborhoods and housing components most likely to expose kids to lead. Catch up quick: Maurer rose to prominence through her work with Cleveland Lead Advocates for Safe Housing, the grassroots group that successfully pushed City Council to pass the 2019 Lead Safe law. Friction point: Despite building a public-private system to certify and remediate rental homes, Maurer says the program is hamstrung by administrative delays, tech hurdles and sluggish spending. The city has spent less than 25% of federal HUD funds and less than 10% of state dollars dedicated to lead remediation as of spring 2025, according to her report. What they're saying: Lead-safe housing "is at a crossroads," Maurer writes. "We can keep doing what we are doing and hope we make enough of a dent ... Or we can take needed steps to simplify the program, focus our resources, and clearly coordinate our leadership and data reporting." What's next: Maurer says she'll seek buy-in from her colleagues on council and the lead advisory board. The other side: Council President Blaine Griffin told that amending the law would be difficult.

Industrial Hub for Bridge Parts to Be Established in Egypt

SAMCO teams up with Germany's Maurer to localise production, boost export capacity, and train Egyptian engineers. Jun 12, 2025 A strategic partnership between Egypt's SAMCO and Germany's Maurer is set to establish an integrated industrial complex in Egypt dedicated to manufacturing bridge and tunnel components. The agreement builds on their existing collaboration producing internationally compliant bridge bearings and marks a major step toward reshoring critical infrastructure production. The planned facility will expand current operations to produce bearings, expansion joints, and other necessary parts for infrastructure mega-projects—such as high-speed rail lines, bridges, and tunnels—serving both domestic needs and regional exports to Africa and the Middle East. As part of the agreement, Egyptian engineers and technicians will receive on-the-job training from Maurer experts, accelerating the transfer of modern manufacturing know-how. Already, 75% of the bearing components are locally sourced, and the plan aims for full domestic production in the near future. A technical committee—comprising representatives from SAMCO, the General Authority for Industrial Development, and the Roads and Bridges Authority—will oversee the hub's planning and execution. The committee will set milestones, staffing requirements, and a timeline to ensure the project aligns with national goals to enhance industrial self-sufficiency and private-sector strength in the transport sector .

‘Don't Jump the Gun,' Says Investor About Nio Stock

Nio (NYSE:NIO) has long been viewed as one of China's most promising EV startups, but the company continues to struggle for footing in a market dominated by heavyweights like Tesla and BYD. Despite early promise, Nio remains unprofitable, and its sales performance – along with a pattern of missed revenue estimates in seven of the past ten quarters – underscores the challenges it faces. Confident Investing Starts Here: That trend continued with the company's Q1 2025 earnings report on Tuesday, which fell short on both the top and bottom lines. Revenue came in at $1.67 billion, missing expectations by $56.14 million, while EPS of -$0.42 was $0.05 below forecasts. Operating losses also widened, rising 19% year-over-year. It wasn't all doom and gloom, however, as NIO's delivery of 42,094 EVs in Q1 2025 marked a 40.1% y/y increase. In addition, Q2 deliveries are projected to rise by 25.5% to 30.7% y/y, partly driven by the company's newly launched economy ONVO brand. Could this be a sign that things are turning around for the beleaguered EV firm? While the widely-followed investor Bill Maurer sees potential, he is not quite ready to jump the gun just yet. 'The company seemingly has a solid growth story ahead of it, but it really needs to execute better,' the investor opined. Maurer also pointed out that while the Q2 delivery outlook shows growth, it's not exactly a home run given the addition of new sub-brands. On top of that, Nio's revenue guidance for the current quarter came in below expectations, raising eyebrows at a time when analysts had already been lowering their forecasts. 'The Onvo ramp is doing much worse than expected, and margins are not improving fast enough to really limit large losses,' adds Maurer. The investor's optimism is further dimmed due to the company's weakening balance sheet, as cash and investments fell from $5.7 billion to $3.6 billion during the past quarter. Maurer would therefore not be surprised to see more value-diluting capital raises coming up on the horizon. 'The balance sheet weakness along with the continued miss of previous growth targets has me a little skeptical currently,' concludes Maurer, who gives NIO shares a Hold (i.e. Neutral) rating. (To watch Maurer's track record, click here) That seems to be the general opinion on Wall Street as well. With 2 Buy, 7 Hold, and 1 Sell recommendations, NIO carries a consensus Hold rating. That said, its 12-month average price target of $4.74 implies an upside of 26% from current levels.
