Henry Payne: Ford F-150 joins Maverick with hip Lobo model
DETROIT - The street truck craze is back, and Ford is jumping in with both feet - or at least both its F-150 and Maverick models. The F-150 Lobo joins the Maverick Lobo in the market with a modified, slammed and tricked truck. Where the Maverick's signature trick is a dual rear clutch pack for tire-burning, sideways drifting, the F-150 Lobo brings an old-school trick: Ford's raucous, 400-horsepower, 410-torque, 5.0-liter V-8 engine. Similar to Mav, the F-150 is lowered (by two inches) with painted rocker panels and signature, brooding fascia and grille lighting. "The F-150 Lobo is the result of recognizing an under-served audience of potential F-150 customers," said street truck enthusiast Josh Blundo, Maverick/F-150 Lobo lead exterior designer. "For years, they have been taking factory pickup trucks and lowering them. Adding more power. Leaning on street styling. From an automaker, this has been an untapped market for two decades." Factory street pickups of yore - think the 1990 Chevy 454 SS, 1993 Ford SVT Lightning, and 2005 Dodge Rumble Bee - have been distinguished by aggressive front air dams, hood scoops, lowered chassis, painted rocker panels, sporty wheels and growly engines. Growly V-8s like the 345-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi that was stuffed into the Dodge. The F-150 Lobo delivers on many of those features while building the street rat in-house, complete with factory warranty. When Lobo goes on sale this fall, customers can enter the F-150 website configurator, choose the menacing, midnight-trimmed STX package starting at $42,015, then select Lobo. The Lobo starts at $59,995 and comes standard with a roomy Crew Cab and 5.5-foot pickup bed. "When it came time to imagine an F-150 Lobo - on the heels of helping create the new Maverick Lobo last year - I didn't have to look far to know what prospective customers would want," said designer Blundo, a veteran street trucker. "Drop it. Give it V-8 sound and performance. Make dual exhaust tips standard. Add aggressive styling. And give it a face that looks ... sinister." If the Maverick Lobo upgrades to a 238-horse turbo-4 from the standard hybrid, then the F-150 chooses one of the big pickup's most menacing engines for its soundtrack. The F-150 Lobo gets its muscle from Ford's 5.0-liter V-8, complete with dual exhaust out back under the painted bumper. Insert the key in the ignition, wake Lobo up and give it a couple of good BRAAAPS to wake the street. Ford then marries it to a standard 4x4 system to put that power to the ground. In the case of Maverick Lobo, Ford added twin clutch packs in the rear to encourage drifts. Further enhancements include bigger brakes, enhanced cooling, stitched and Lobo-monogrammed seats, and a Lobo mode for truck-focused hooning. Not F-150 Lobo. The big Ford's focuses on aesthetic enhancements like black trim, a light bar bisecting the front grille, hood vents, and its signature Lobo badge aft of the front fender. Beneath the skin is STX's familiar cloth interior and V-8. No drifting kit, no special stitching – not even the dramatic Turbofan wheel option found on little brother Lobo. The big truck will tow 7,900 pounds, however. For motorheads looking for more V-8 punch, they can option the $12,350 Performance 700 package on top of the Lobo model - which brings in the Mustang GT500's fire-breathing, supercharged, 5.0-liter engine that pushes out a staggering 700 horsepower. Huzzah. F-150 comes with one wheel option: gloss-black 22-inchers. The new F-150 Lobo is available in five exterior colors: Agate Black Metallic, Atlas Blue Metallic, Carbonized Gray, Oxford White and Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. ____ Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. The 2025 Ford F-150 Lobo Marks the Return of the Factory Street Truck
Ford's latest version of the F-150 is a stylish and mean street truck that builds on its smaller Maverick Lobo sibling. A powerhouse done right As the top-selling pickup truck, let alone automobile, in the United States, the humble Ford F-150 has been used in various ways by people from all walks of life. Whether hauling mulch, manure, lumber, or a boat or used as a job site work truck, family vehicle, hardcore off-roader, drag racer, or drift truck, someone, somewhere has used an F-150 in a way that has not been pictured in the dealership brochure. It is quite rare for one of the world's largest automakers to acknowledge and create something directly inspired by the enthusiasts who customize their trucks. Ford has already done this with the Ford F-150 Raptor and the subsequent line of lifted off-road style vehicles. However, Ford's latest offering—the 2025 Ford F-150 Lobo—is a nod to another community of enthusiasts, as it's a factory-built street truck that wasn't designed in a boardroom or through a PowerPoint, but crafted by true fanatics who live, breathe, and die by them. Ford's F-150 joins the street truck renaissance Building off the roots sown by the F-150's little unibody brother, the Maverick Lobo, the F-150 Lobo is living proof that while respective manufacturers like Toyota, Ram and Chevrolet discontinued nameplates like the X-Runner, SRT-10 and Silverado SS, street trucks never really died—the true fans kept it on the down low. Enthusiasts have kept the passion for these cool pickup trucks alive through their extensive builds, which often include lowered suspensions, large wheels, loud exhausts, and blacked-out trim. Ford understands the significance of this scene because key people involved in the Lobo's development are part of that community. One of the main designers, Josh Blundo, even drives a street truck himself. They are not just corporate heads backed by bean-counters; they know the target audience because they are the target audience. […] From an automaker, this has been an untapped market for two decades,' Blundo said in a statement. 'So, on the bones of the Built Ford Tough F-150 truck, we created a street truck that rolls off the line ready to roar, with proven durability and a Ford factory limited warranty for more confidence and peace of mind than aftermarket solutions.' The Lobo is built on the F-150 STX trim and is exclusively offered as a SuperCrew cab (meaning four whole doors), but it ditches its utilitarian guts for style, substance, and a lot more horsepower under the hood. The standard 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 in the STX is yanked out, and in its place is the optional 5-liter V8, a motor that Blundo claims is 'already a superstar in the street truck community.' It produces 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, which are transmitted to a two-speed 4WD automatic system and a 3.73 electronic locking rear axle —a setup that provides traction and year-round usability. However, where the F-150 Lobo stands out is in its looks, and from the pictures, it is built to look nothing but menacing. The list of upgrades includes a revised suspension, which drops the rear by two inches for a lower, sleeker stance, a 10-piece body kit for additional ground effects, a unique-styled upper grille, a gloss-black mesh grille, an aggressive cowl hood, a menacing dual exhaust system, and updated LED lighting inspired by its little brother, the Maverick Lobo. 2025 Ford F-150 Lobo The new Lobo also gets a set of street-styled blacked-out exterior trim, including blacked-out hood vents, exhaust, and badges, as well as Lobo-exclusive 22-inch gloss-black wheels. These pieces stand out in the five colors available for the Lobo: Agate Black Metallic, Atlas Blue Metallic, Carbonized Gray, Oxford White, and Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, which Ford says will help buyers 'give their truck the personality they desire.' According to lead designer Blundo, the Lobo in all-black 'looks straight menacing,' and we cannot agree more. Not many details have been given about the interior of the F-150 Lobo. Still, given that it is built atop the STX trim, it comes well-equipped with amenities including seats finished in what Ford calls Unique Sport Cloth, a 12-inch screen featuring Ford's SYNC 4 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a safety suite with features like Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, a Reverse Sensing System, Forward Collision Warning, and a Lane-Keeping System. Blundo and Ford said that the Ford F-150 Lobo is built to be a powerful and stylish street truck for enthusiasts, noting that the modifications it made deliver 'a complete foundation straight off the line,' while recognizing that 'some [owners] will take this great foundation for future personalization' at the same time. 2025 Ford F-150 Lobo Package and Ford Maverick Lobo with Josh Blundo, lead designer. — Source: Ford Final thoughts As someone who witnessed a few different eras and trends of modified car culture throughout my youth, adolescence, and adulthood, one thing is certain: no matter the scene, it is full of people willing to spend real money on personalization, performance, and style. With the Maverick Lobo and now the F-150 Lobo, Ford isn't just throwing a bone; it's giving loyal enthusiasts a platform to feel inspired. Nonetheless, a truck like the Lobo is a breath of fresh air in a landscape increasingly dominated by electrification, crossovers, and synthetic engine noise; it's a mean, V8-powered machine for the streets. According to Ford, the 2025 F-150 Lobo's MSRP starts at $57,800 plus $2,195 destination and delivery. They also note that the Lobo's package price on the STX is $4,695. Ford F-150 Lobo Prototype Spotted Testing, Signaling Return of Performance Street Trucks
If you're old enough to have appreciated cars in the 1990s and early 2000s, you know that factory-built street trucks were huge during those times. Ford specifically reigned supreme then with its SVT Lightning – no, not the EV. They're quite cool, especially the second generation that came with a supercharged engine. The Blue Oval proved then that trucks need not be hulking and burly to sell, until the market stopped agreeing. Thankfully, Ford realized there's a market for street-tuned trucks and introduced the Maverick Lobo recently. More than just an appearance package, the Maverick Lobo rides lower to the ground thanks to a specially tuned suspension for better handling. It also borrows parts from other Ford vehicles, like the rear drive system from the Bronco Sport, steering from the European Kuga, and brakes from the sporty Fiesta ST. It also comes with paddle shifters and a Lobo mode. But Ford isn't stopping there. The company is going bigger with its street truck onslaught and will soon introduce an F-150 Lobo. This has been long overdue since the trademark for the name was discovered two years ago, but at least now it's here. A prototype has been spotted testing on US soil, completely undisguised and showing off a brand-new F-150 Lobo badge on the fenders. If that's not an indication, then Ford is pulling off a mean prank. Details aren't officially available for now, but thanks to the prototype, we know what to expect from the not-for-dirt street truck. Beyond the new emblem, it has a unique front fascia that isn't seen on other F-150s, while some aero parts have been added, such as a lower air dam and side skirts. The prototype also wears a set of black 22-inch wheels that look different from the Maverick Lobo's, wrapped in Bridgestone Alenza all-season tires. It's unclear how Ford will employ its mechanical upgrades for the F-150 Lobo, though we expect similar upgrades found in the Maverick Lobo. A lower and stiffer suspension setup is almost guaranteed, along with enhanced steering and drive systems. The question now is what will power the truck, but the 450-hp twin-turbo V6 from the Ford F-150 Raptor is a mighty candidate. Hopefully, it will come with a manual transmission, but we're not holding our breath for that. Another mystery is pricing. With the upgrades, the Lobo trim should tuck in safely in the middle of the F-150 range, but should not go over the pricing of Ford's precious Raptor line to attract more customers. Our guess is just as good as yours right now, but we're expecting Ford to announce its launch soon, given the production-ready look of the spotted prototype. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. Here's the 2026 Ford F-150 Lobo Totally Undisguised
Ford revived the street truck with the sporty Maverick Lobo , a little pickup with running gear from the old Focus ST and RS. Now, it seems to be giving the Lobo treatment to the mighty F-150. Our spy photographer captured the new F-150 Lobo in its full, undisguised glory. From the photos, we can see that the F-150 Lobo gets a unique front fascia with a lower air dam, side skirts, and black 22-inch wheels on street-oriented Bridgestone Alenza all-season tires. There's also an "F-150 Lobo" badge in the little trim piece on the front fenders. Photo by: KGP Photography Photo by: KGP Photography Photo by: KGP Photography Ford Authority reported in 2023 that Ford filed a trademark for the "F-150 Lobo" name , which was before even the Maverick Lobo was confirmed. But other than some photos of camouflaged F-150 Lobos running around, the rumormill on this sport truck has been fairly quiet. So, we don't know what to expect exactly. Obviously, Ford has a couple of hot-rod engines to chose from—most obvious are the F-150 Raptor's 450-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. There's also the Raptor R's 720-hp supercharged V-8. But, we don't know how extensive Ford's planned changes for the F-150 Lobo are. The Raptor comes from Ford Performance, and it's a comprehensive work of the standard truck, with the explicit aim of increasing dune-bashing capability. We don't know if Ford will go so far with the F-150 Lobo. Ford has some history with sporty, street-oriented F-150s. The SVT Lightning of 1993-1995 and 1999-2004 both got power and handling upgrades, along with sporty exterior trim. The second Lightning was even supercharged. Ford obviously revived the "Lightning" name for its electric F-150, hence why it's using Lobo here. But spiritually, this will very much be a successor to the old SVT Lightning models. Photo by: KGP Photography Also of note, Ford's F-150 Lobo prototypes are all double cabs, with four full-size doors. The SVT Lightning was always a single-cab, and while Ford still offers a single-cab F-150, two-door full-size pickups are far less popular than they used to be. Given that the F-150 Lobo looks production ready, we'll hopefully see it soon in a more official capacity. As SVT Lightning fans, we can't wait to learn what Ford has in store.
