America's 15 best gas stations for food, according to online reviews
Gas station food often gets a bad rap — but for many travelers on a road trip, there may not be much of a choice. Pit stops across the U.S. provide options that go far beyond processed and packaged snacks, instead offering healthy smoothies, specialty doughnuts, sushi and more. Many are family-owned and operated, have stood the test of time — and some even donate a portion of their proceeds to charities. The food website Chowhound put together a list of 15 gas station chains with the best food, based on online reviews. Check it out. A family-owned convenience store founded in 1965, Kwik Trip is based in Wisconsin but has over 850 stores across the Midwest, according to its website. It is known for all-day breakfast sandwiches, a hot food bar and its specialty "Dunkers" and "Glazers" – doughnuts baked in-house. "It's a five-star restaurant that happens to also sell gas," one person said in a review, as Chowhound noted. QuikTrip has over 1,000 stores across 17 states, including its headquarters in Oklahoma. Fans love "QT" for its craft coffee and signature QuickShakes, which come in seasonal flavors like caramel apple, candy corn and strawberry kiwi. Other favorites are roller grill options, twists on the grilled cheese – such as a chicken, bacon and ranch option – and pulled pork sandwiches. "Very stuffed, beautifully flavored, nice tangy sauce – and for $5," one man wrote in a Yelp review. With 800 locations across Utah and 20 other western states, Maverik features its own brand of food named BonFire, in keeping with its adventure theme that includes burritos, salads, wraps, pizzas and sandwiches. Maverik's fountain drinks offer a wide variety of brands and flavor mix-ins like coconut, lime and cream. The family-owned Kelley's Market, founded in 1926, has 50 locations across Illinois and Wisconsin. Travelers can refuel with Kelley's beloved cappuccinos and grab smoothies, tacos and burritos. Some locations also offer Noble Roman's craft pizza and Which Wich Superior Sandwiches, home of the "Elvis Wich" — packed with peanut butter, bacon, bananas and honey. Founded in 1968 as a general store in Boone, Iowa, Casey's has since grown to over 2,900 locations across 20 states. The spot is famous for its breakfast pizza, which has scrambled eggs, cheese and a choice of cheese sauce or sausage gravy on top. It also offers thin crust and cauliflower crust options. "At Casey's, it all comes down to the pizza," spokesperson Katie Petru told Fox News Digital. "We've been making it for over 40 years, and our fans know us for our made-from-scratch dough, whole milk mozzarella cheese and abundantly topped pies." This is said to be the place to stop for fried chicken when traveling through Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia and North Carolina. The chicken is lightly breaded and pressure-cooked in trans-fat-free cooking oil, while the fries are hand-cut and hand-breaded from fresh Idaho potatoes, its website says. "It definitely tastes like it was cooked with some soul," one TikToker said in a review. Wawa began in 1902 as a Pennsylvania dairy farm. It's now known along the East Coast with over 1,100 locations. Its cult-favorite coffee and frozen, house-made energy drinks offer a pick-me-up, while its seasonal sandwiches and specialty sides are praised by reviewers. "This is the best flavor combination I've quite literally ever had," one TikToker said about the garlic aioli mac and cheese. Hy-Vee first opened as a market in 1930, later expanded to include gas stations and has since branched out into full-service restaurants. Hy-Vee's 240 locations across the Midwest are a one-stop destination for fuel, snacks, seafood, groceries and more. Popular options are its breakfast pizza, salad bars and sushi counters – which dole out unexpected rolls like a Cheetos "Flamin' Hot" version. A Tennessee-based chain with just over 85 locations, Weigel's also owns and operates Broadacre Dairy Inc, which processes milk, tea, juices and eggnog for its convenience stores, as well as its own bakery, Red Barn Foods. Weigel's is known for its pizza and flavored milk, in particular the horchata and orange creamsicle variations. Founded in 1972 in Greenville, South Carolina, Spinx has 84 locations throughout the Carolinas. The destinations are for foodies in search of comfort foods like fried chicken, fried pork chops and sausage croissants. Other southern favorites include chicken gizzards, patty melts and corn dogs. Pennsylvania-based Rutter's has over 90 locations that offer local produce, like watermelon, blueberries and sweet corn in grab-and-go cases. "Out of all the not-really-a-truck-stop truck stops, Rutter's is easily the best," one Reddit user wrote in a review. Buc-ee's, founded in Texas, has since expanded to 54 locations across nine states. It boasts having the "cleanest restrooms in America" – winning a contest in 2012. Additionally, it's renowned for its extensive food offerings, particularly its brisket, "Beaver Nuggets" cheese puffs, breakfast tacos, fudge, jerky and more. Love's began as a single truck stop in Oklahoma and has grown to over 600 locations nationwide. Love's sells hot-and-ready items like tacos, hot dogs and egg rolls, plus a lighter menu of healthier options like fruit cups and parfaits. For more Lifestyle articles, visit "We always love to hear that our customers say they love Love's," spokesperson Tracey Budz told Fox News Digital. "We focus on flavor, freshness and crave-ability, as well as making sure the food offerings are portable and easy to eat on the go." The list would be remiss without 7-Eleven, the largest convenience store chain, according to NACS Magazine, with over 85,000 stores worldwide. Home of the Slurpee and Big Gulp, 7-Eleven has a private label, 7-Select, that includes premium sandwiches, salads, snacks and fruit cups. Its varying hot food offerings typically include hot dogs, pizza, chicken wings and taquitos. Yesway, which acquired the Allsup's convenience store chain in 2019, has over 400 locations across the Southwest and Plains states. It's known for its "world-famous" burritos, particularly the deep-fried beef and bean iteration. Other varieties include a new pepperoni pizza burrito, plus the "Chicken Chimmy with Hatch Chili," "Chili Rueno Hatch Green Chili and Cheese" and the "Chimmy Chimmy Chonga."

Maverik beginning Kum & Go rebrands in Iowa and Nebraska
This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Maverik has begun rebranding Kum & Go convenience stores in Nebraska and will start doing the same in Iowa next week, according to the convenience retailer's remodeling schedule on its website. The first four Kum & Go rebrands in Nebraska began in mid-June and those locations reopened under the Maveriks brand later in the month. Four more Nebraska locations are expected to reopen under the Maverik name in the coming days. Meanwhile, Maverik is set to complete its first 34 rebrands in Kum & Go's home state of Iowa between next week and mid-October. Maverik now only has three states in which it hasn't started rebrands — Minnesota and the Dakotas — as the Utah-based company progresses towards what appears to be a retirement of the Kum & Go banner. Dive Insight: Maverik's rebranding update in Iowa is arguably its most significant to date, since the Hawkeye State has been Kum & Go's headquarters and largest market since the company was founded in 1959. Even as Maverik has taken over the retailer's banner in several states over the past year, Iowa is still home to 96 Kum & Go stores, according to the latter's website. The first rebrand in Iowa will begin in Neola, a small town located near Omaha, Nebraska, on July 18, with an expected reopening on July 22, according to Maverik's remodel schedule. Seven others in Iowa are expected to be completed by the end of July, with a further nine in August, two in September and 16 in October. Maverik did not offer a timeline for the other 62 stores in the state. In Nebraska, where Kum & Go still has 17 stores, the first four rebrands took place between June 17 and June 20, according to its remodeling expects to finish the next four by July 18. Like in Iowa, Maverik did not offer an update on when it expects to complete every rebrand in Nebraska. A spokesperson from Maverik did not respond by press time when asked to comment on the company's Kum & Go rebranding efforts in Iowa and Nebraska. Maverik acquired Kum & Go in late 2023, and the first round of rebrands began early in 2024 in Utah and Colorado. In October, Maverik revealed plans to rebrand Kum & Go's stores in Oklahoma, and a month later confirmed intentions to rebrand all Kum & Go locations, although a company spokesperson emphasized at the time that Maverik would take a 'thoughtful, market-by-market approach' before confirming each state. Rebrands in Arkansas commenced this past January, while those in Missouri and Michigan kicked off in the spring. Several former corporate Kum & Go staffers told C-Store Dive earlier this year that despite Maverik initially saying it would maintain Kum & Go's branding and programs, the Utah-based company never considered doing so, leading to internal conflict. Speculated Release of New Mountain Dew Flavor Is Not What Fans Had Hoped
Speculated Release of New Mountain Dew Flavor Is Not What Fans Had Hoped originally appeared on Parade. New intel regarding Mountain Dew's highly anticipated Honeydew flavor just dropped and fans are not afraid to make their feelings about it known. The cult-favorite PepsiCo soda brand is making 2025 the year of the Dew, at least that's how it feels with the sudden release and return of so many new flavors and exclusive drink recipes, like Mountain Dew Infinite Swirl, its Sweet Lightning Peaches & Cream Dirty Soda at KFC and of course, the two all-new varities rumored to drop in the next few months. This latest leak suggests that Mountain Dew's international icon, its Honeydew variety, is due to be released in just a couple of days—but fans won't find it just anywhere. Related: Trusted food blogger , who accurately predicted the release of Little Debbie's Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal Creme Pies, the new Coffee mate collab with Harry Potter and the seasonal return of a fall-favorite Chobani creamer, reported on Thursday that the new to the U.S. flavor (which was previously a Canadian exclusive) will be heading to select stores on or around July 13. Mountain Dew Honeydew is said to feature a "citrus zing of Mountain Dew with sweet juicy essence of honeydew melon," and will be rolling out exclusively at Maverik-owned stores this Sunday. Obviously, the exclusivity of it all has some fans feeling pretty bummed–and by some, we mean those who don't live near a Maverik gas station or Kum & Go convenience store. "I feel like Mtn Dew is hiding all the good flavors from me with these exclusives," the influencer joked. "First Canada only now at some gas station nowhere near me," a second lamented. "Bro it's like these stores literally appear out of nowhere 😂," a third quipped. "Mtn dew is so annoying with all these region & restaurant locks lol," another added. "So annoying," one more whined. "I've been waiting for this since before they canceled its first US release and now there's none on the east coast😭." Given that Mountain Dew has not yet officially announced the arrival of the new Honeydew flavor, there's always a chance that things could change. Maybe it's a phased rollout starting with Maverik stores, maybe not, but we'd at least like to remain hopeful. A spokesperson for Mountain Dew was not immediately available for comment. Rezoning request to allow construction of new Topeka truck stop heads to city council for approval
TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Planning Commission has tentatively signed off on a rezoning proposal that would allow for the construction of a new truck stop in West Topeka. The matter will now go to the governing body for consideration. If approved, the Maverik filling station will be built off I-70 on what's now a vacant lot at Southwest Sixth Avenue and Southwest Fairlawn Road. The property is the site of the old Ramada West Hotel which closed in 2017. The building sat vacant for years before it was condemned by the city in 2023 and eventually razed. The proposal to rezone the property would allow for the construction of a 5,900-square-foot convenience store with 10 fueling stations for passenger vehicles, five for semi trucks and a truck scale. It would also have a 1.28-acre site that's being left for potential future multi-family use. If approved by city council, people can also expect a dining experience. 'We offer a full food kitchen. From burritos to ready-made sandwiches, pizza, and kind of the whole gamut, which is a big mainstay of our business,' Nick Halfhil with Maverik Convenience Stores said. 'We do offer a small seating area outside. Picnic tables and a very small seating area inside as well. So we differentiate ourselves a little bit there as the type of operation it is.' Maverik is new to Kansas, with one location just opened in Garden City. For more local news, click here. Maverik opens first c-store in Michigan
This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. Maverik opened its first convenience store in Michigan last week, according to a company LinkedIn announcement. The c-store is located in the city of Wyoming, about 7 miles south of downtown Grand Rapids. Michigan marks Maverik's 22nd state of operation, coming on the heels of the retailer debuting in Kansas last month. Maverik is also in the process of rebranding existing Kum & Go c-stores in Michigan to its own banner — including one in that same city. Maverik publicly revealed plans earlier this year to rebrand Kum & Go's seven stores in Michigan. The Great Lakes State was one of the Iowa retailer's smallest markets, as it only debuted there in January 2023. Maverik said in February that every rebrand in the state would be done by this summer. As those plans take shape, Maverik is also extending its reach in Michigan beyond Kum & Go's former locations. The new store — located on 54th Street in Wyoming — is not listed as one of Kum & Go's former sites on the retailer's website, and according to Kent County Records, was owned by local baked goods chain Arnie's as of 2024. A store-level employee currently working at the new Maverik confirmed to C-Store Dive that the retailer took over directly from Arnie's. A Maverik spokesperson did not respond by press time when asked to comment on the new location. Maverik is also set to rebrand a Kum & Go in Wyoming. That store is located on Division Street, about half a mile from Maverik's newly built store, according to Kum & Go's website. As of last month, Maverik had completed over 180 Kum & Go rebrands across Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri. The Salt Lake City-based retailer has over 800 convenience stores in its network. Recommended Reading Inside Maverik's decision to cut Kum & Go's foodservice program Sign in to access your portfolio
