German economy minister opposes national digital tax

Maximilian Henning Euractiv Jul 9, 2025 12:59 1 min. read News Based on facts, either observed and verified directly by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. German economy minister Katherina Reiche opposes a tax on large tech companies, she said in an interview with German media. The German government has been publicly discussing the idea for several months. Culture commissioner Wolfram Weimer said in an interview in May that he was preparing a digital tax on large online platforms. This was supposed to be in the range of 10% of advertising revenue – inspired by a platform tax that Austria introduced in 2020. His government colleague, Reiche, has now positioned herself against the proposal. 'We should not be talking about more, but about fewer barriers to trade,' she told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. 'At the same time, we need to improve the competitiveness of German and European tech companies, so they have a chance in international competition,' she added. (nl)
