Ibrahim Maza on new environment at Leverkusen

'It's not any different, I play football and put the work in. But it's a bit more intense, and it's tough,' said Maza, speaking to club media. 'The quality of the players and everything else was even better than I expected, and it's been great. The boys have helped me settle in, and it's been fun. Amine Adli, Aleix [Garcia] Boni, I get on well with everyone.' Advertisement Before becoming a midfield mainstay for Hertha, Berlin-born Maza was on the books of local side Reinickendorf Füchse. He went on to complete the transition from the playing fields of Berlin to the Bundesliga, coming on as a late substitute against Bayern München at the end of the 2022/23 season. He scored his first professional goal just one month later against Wolfsburg, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Hertha history at 17 years, six months and three days old. And since the club's relegation to the 2. Bundesliga, Maza has gone from strength to strength. He registered five goals and five assists as Hertha stumbled to an 11th place finish. He is now keen to keep on improving as a result of his Leverkusen move: 'I want to work hard, try to improve, and learn from the older players.' Advertisement And when asked what he is most looking forward to about the team's training camp in Brazil, the teenager was certain with: 'The weather! Apart from that, spending time with the boys, making friends with them and getting to know everyone better.' Leverkusen's training camp will take place in Rio de Janeiro from July 14th to July 24th as they prepare for a new era under Erik ten Hag.

Maza takes the helm at Reminder Publishing

EAST LONGMEADOW — Longtime journalist Chris Maza has been named executive editor of Reminder Publishing, giving him overall editorial responsibility for the group's eight newspapers, two magazines and numerous specialty publications. Maza, 42, was named interim editor earlier this year when Payton North, the previous executive editor, left the organization for a job with the Hampden District Attorney's Office. He began his career with The Reminder in 2010 as assistant managing editor, leaving the newspaper group in 2017 to pursue a communications career in higher education. Maza returned to journalism in 2019 as editor of the Westfield News Group but found himself back at The Reminder when it purchased the Westfield publisher that same year. 'It was a roundabout way to find my way back home,' he said. 'I'm grateful to the powers that be for putting their trust in me. It's gratifying, because there has been such a long history with me and this company and these communities. This is a new way for me to serve these cities and towns.' While newspapers remain the foundation of Reminder Publishing, Maza said he wants to continue strong programming on the company's podcast — 'So That Reminds Me' — which features interviews with local newsmakers. He also plans to strengthen the newspapers' presence on social media. 'We're trying to be more engaging. We're diversifying how we're presenting information, but with it all leading back to our publications, which are our bread and butter and the backbone of what we do here,' he said. Curtis Panlilio, chief revenue officer and technology manager for Reminder Publishing, said the company was 'thrilled by Chris' promotion.' 'The Reminder has been very fortunate to have many of its leadership team develop and rise through the ranks. Chris exemplifies this, and I'm proud of what he has and will accomplish as executive editor,' said Panlilio. 'We look forward to his continuing success with The Reminder.' Maza started out his career as a beat reporter covering the suburbs of Springfield. It is where he learned to appreciate people and their stories, and he plans to continue embedding reporters in communities across Western Massachusetts, he said. 'There's probably not anywhere in our coverage area that I haven't had my fingerprints on at some point,' he said. 'We really get to know our communities, and they get to know us. When you have that deeper understanding of how a community works, when issues come up, you have a better understanding of how they impact people.' Maza now runs a staff of four editors, six full-time writers and more than a dozen freelance correspondents and photographers. A married father of a 7-year-old daughter and, as a lifelong resident of the region, Maza said readers are concerned about everything from local schools and government to whether their road is going to be the next one paved. 'They want to know where their property taxes are going and how (municipal) projects are going to impact their bottom line,' he said. 'We're reporting on the people who run and make up these communities. We're going beyond just covering local government. We're telling stories about people who are the fabric of the communities.' Venture-backed Fintech Maza Financial Acquired by Flexbase Technologies for $40 Million

Flexbase Technologies Inc. acquired Los Angeles-based fintech Maza Financial Inc. for $40 million on April 24. The vast majority of Maza's 22-person team joined Flex, a B2B fintech brand operated by the company, as part of the deal. Maza began as a financial app to help Spanish-speaking consumers in the U.S. open bank accounts. Many users were small business owners who operated solo businesses in fields such as landscaping and cleaning, so it developed tools for this customer base. A year prior to the acquisition, Maza raised an unannounced $15 million venture capital round led by Wellington, with additional funds from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Tusk Venture Partners and Titanium Ventures. 'We noticed several customers were actually running businesses, so we began building tools to empower their operation,' says Luciano Arango, co-founder and chief executive of Maza, in a statement. Soeren Stache/dpa Bayer Leverkusen have signed teen-aged attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza from second division Hertha Berlin on a five-year contract until 2030, the Bundesliga champions said on Thursday. The 19-year-old Algeria international is seen as a huge talent, and there had been speculation for weeks that he would leave Hertha despite a contract until 2027 for Leverkusen. He has outstanding technical ability, is good at dribbling and assertive and he also has vision for his teammates who he can brilliantly bring into play." Berlin-born Maza played for the German U18, U19 and U20 teams before opting to play for his father's country of Algeria in 2024. He joined Hertha in 2018 and is a key player for them now. Advertisement Maza named the Leverkusen transfer "a great chance – a dream! I had the best opportunities to develop and improve with Hertha in the second division. Now I want to prove myself on the big stage with a top European club." Maza is considered a potential successor for German international Florian Wirtz who has a Leverkusen contract until 2027 but is subject of interest from several European top clubs.
