France Captain Griedge Mbock 'Impatient' for Euro 2025 Debut in Quarterfinal

France captain Griedge Mbock is "impatient" to get going as she prepares to make her first appearance at the Women's European Championship. Les Bleues have been boosted by the return of Mbock for Saturday's quarterfinal against Germany after the experienced defender missed the whole of the group stage due to a calf injury. Although it's not as if they fared too badly without her. France topped one of the toughest groups in the tournament with three wins, including over defending champion England. "I feel really good," Mbock said on Friday. "I was away from the pitch for quite a long time, but today I feel good and I'm going to be back to the pitch. I took all the energy that the team gave me, that helped me to hold on for this time of absence. I'm impatient to start this competition on the pitch and, simply, to be able to contribute." The winner will face world champion Spain or Switzerland in the semifinals. The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of them — since her debut 12 years ago. But at Euro 2025, she was restricted to a place on the substitutes' bench and only then so could she cheer on the team from the sidelines. "It's very good news," France coach Laurent Bonadei said. "She suffered a bit in silence for all this time, far away from the pitch. "However, she was present with her teammates in order to give very good advice. That is why I included her on the bench, because she's captain, she's very precious in the locker room also and she'll be ready to start the game tomorrow." France is on an 11-match winning streak, but the quarterfinals have always been somewhat of a stumbling block for Les Bleues. France has only twice made it into the semifinals of a World Cup or Euros: at the 2011 World Cup, where it lost to the United States, and at Euro 2022, where it fell to Germany. Les Bleues have been eliminated in the quarterfinals in six of the past eight World Cups or Euros. "I like talking about overcoming barriers, and I think that, since October, this team has been overcoming barriers at each step," Bonadei said. "We had the friendly games, we had the Nations League and now our group here, which was labeled the group of death and this team advanced and managed to overcome barriers. "So I have a lot of confidence in this team to overcome this next barrier." As well as being boosted at the back by Mbock, France knows it can rely on its ruthless attack. France bagged 11 goals in its three group stage matches — scored by nine different players. Moreover, Germany will be weakened in defense. Captain Giulia Gwinn was ruled out of the tournament after injuring her knee in her team's opening win and her replacement, Carlotta Wamser, is suspended for the quarterfinal after being sent off in Germany's 4-1 thrashing by Sweden. England Women handed major injury boost ahead of Euro 2025 opener vs France

England begin their European Championships title defence against France on Saturday and their opponents have been sweating on the fitness of a key player before the game France expect to be without captain Griedge Mbock for their European Championships opener against holders England on Saturday night. The Paris Saint-Germain defender has been battling to recover from a calf injury, but manager Laurent Bonadei indicated this game will come too early. 'Unfortunately Griedge is still feeling a bit uneasy on her calf,' Bonadei said. 'It's the beginning of the competition we don't want to take any risks ‌ Bonadei indicated Mbock, 30, has suffered no tear or rupture and will be with the squad, albeit not able to start against the Lionesses. France made the big call to leave Wendie Renard out of the squad, but Bonadei says he trusts his younger players at the back - with 21-year-old Alice Sombath potentially in line for a start. ‌ 'Yes its true Wendie was an important decision but regarding other players in defence, not having Wendie and Gridege's injury could be damaging but the last 8 matches i think Wendie only played against Iceland," the manager added. He said he fully trusts the younger players preparing to step up in place of the more experienced old heads. With Mbock and Renard missing, Sakina Karchaoui is one of the more experienced players in the squad, and she expects the captain to have an influence despite not being able to feature on the pitch. " Griedge is someone that's very important within the group because she s a leader, the captain of the team and even if not starting the game shell be there with us and always knows the right things to say," Kharchaoui said. Earlier in the week, England defender Lucy Bronze was asked about her former team-mate Mbock. The pair played together at Lyon during Bronze's three-season stint with the club, between 2017 and 2020. "She's picked up a number of injuries, been very unfortunate since I left Lyon, she did her Achilles twice and had a really bad knee incident," Bronze said. "But before that, for a young player, she was so mature. She played right foot, left foot, so athletic, fast, read the game, she played so many years next to Wendie Renard. "She just learned so much from her and then added her own style. When I went to Barcelona, she was one of the players Alexia asked me about. Mbock is probably not a big name that people would necessarily think of but when you play with or against her, she definitely catches your eye." ‌ Predicted Lineups England (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter;Stanway, Walsh; Mead, Toone, Hemp; Russo Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
