Chicken wrap battle heats up: ‘War' escalates between fast-food chains

There's new competition in the world of crispy chicken. After a long wait, the McCrispy Snack Wrap is back on McDonald's menus as rival chains hop on the handheld snack bandwagon with their own versions of fried chicken rollups. 3 McDonald's Snack Wraps are officially back on the menu as of July 10. McDonald's Advertisement Snack Wraps have been off the menu at the Golden Arches for nearly a decade, but as of 10:30 a.m. on July 10, fans can now take solace in knowing that the beloved bites are here to stay. The Snack Wrap features one of McDonald's new McCrispy Strips, topped with crisp shredded lettuce and shredded cheese, all wrapped in a soft flour tortilla. In this iteration, it comes in two different flavors: Advertisement Ranch Snack Wrap: The fan-favorite item features a McCrispy Strip with shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, all brought together, a creamy Ranch sauce, wrapped in a soft tortilla. Spicy Snack Wrap: McDonald's said this wrap is 'back and hotter than ever.' It features a McCrispy Strip with shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, and a Spicy Pepper sauce, wrapped in a soft tortilla. McD's diners who have been anxiously waiting for the release of the Snack Wrap woke up excited for its return. 'HAPPY SNACK WRAP DAY TO ALL THOSE WHO CELEBRATE,' someone exclaimed. 'Mind ur business if you see me at McDonald's tomorrow ordering 20 snack wraps…. I've been waiting years for this day!' one person posted on X. Advertisement 'You won,' McDonald's said on Instagram. 'This is what victory feels like, folks,' a fan responded. Advertisement 'Getting emotional,' another said. Both versions of the Snack Wrap cost $2.99 — and in a bid to compete with the highly beloved fast-food item, other chains are plucking out their own chicken wrap deals. Taco Bell Taco Bell threw shade at McDonald's by reminding their customers that their answer to the crispy chicken wrap is not new — it's been around for a whole 24 days. The fast-food chain introduced Crispy Chicken Tacos, Burritos and Strips to its menus for a limited time back in June. 'Babe, what's wrong u haven't wished us a happy 24-day anniversary of crispy chicken,' the chain's Instagram post read. There's even a Partiful event for the occasion, where Taco Bell shared that on July 10 only, the day the Snack Wrap is released, customers can get a crispy chicken burrito or taco for $2.40. Advertisement 'It's not often that a restaurant has crispy chicken tacos and burritos on the menu for 24 whole days- but it's finally our chance,' the event description quibbled. The deal is exclusively for reward members and is limited to one per customer. Popeyes 3 Popeyes is offering free chicken wraps this week. Popeyes Popeyes is striking up a huge deal in competition with the Golden Arches. Advertisement The chain announced that chicken lovers can get a free Popeyes Chicken Wrap from July 10 to 13 at U.S. locations. Normally, they cost $3.99 each. 'The Wrap Wars are officially on and Popeyes is way ahead of the game,' the chain wrote in an email to PEOPLE. 'While one familiar fast food chain scrambles to launch wraps of their own on July 10, Popeyes has already been serving up heat all summer long,' they added, hitting back at McDonald's. Popeyes announced the addition of Chicken Wraps to its menu just one day before McDonald's announced the date of the Snack Wrap's return. Sonic Advertisement 3 Sonic introduced two new chicken wraps to its menu. Sonic Sonic is also coming in hot, introducing two new bold Crispy Tender Wraps, which will be part of their $1.99 menu. The new menu items rolled out July 8 — the same week as the Snack Wrap — and come in two different variations: Cheesy Baja Crispy Tender Wrap: An all-white meat, crispy tender wrapped up in a soft, flour tortilla along with lettuce, tomatoes, melty cheddar cheese and zesty baja sauce. Snack Wrap redux: How McD's is refreshing its menu to lure back customers

McDonald's is reviving fan favorites, spicing up its menu and emphasizing low-cost items to bring inflation-weary customers back to the Golden Arches. The world's largest restaurant chain recently announced it was bringing back the popular Snack Wrap, which makes its return to McD's outlets on July 10, along with a new, limited-time Spicy Egg McMuffin sandwich, which debuted on July 8. The refreshed menu comes as the company looks to boost sales as budget-conscious consumers pull back on spending. Same-store sales at McDonald's outlets in the U.S. declined 3.6% in the first quarter, the biggest drop since the COVID-19 pandemic closed stores nationwide. At the same time, traffic among low-income customers was down "nearly double digits," CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's May earnings call, reflecting a customer base that the company acknowledged is still feeling the effects of inflation. McDonald's isn't the first fast-food chain to use promotions to drive business, but it has long been among the most adept at tweaking its menu and pricing, while its scale makes it a bellwether for customer tastes. In January, for example, it introduced the McValue menu, which includes the $5 meal deal, along with a "buy one, add one for $1" deal, as the company leaned into affordable offerings. McDonald's is reacting to a number of economic and competitive pressures, said Matthew Todd, a director at S&P Global Ratings. Chief among them is continuing to deliver value to low-income consumers in a time of economic uncertainty. "This isn't anything new, but I think it's a continuation of this pursuit of regaining the consumers' trust," Todd said. Sara Senatore, a research analyst at the Bank of America, told CBS MoneyWatch that McDonald's move to expand its affordable offerings is an attempt to "stay relevant" with low-income consumers, who are "under much greater pressure than other cohorts." Other fast-food chains and restaurants also have seen weaker sales as consumers battered by higher prices and the general cost of living look to save cash. For McDonald's, which has over 35,000 locations nationwide, the difference now is it's not outperforming competitors as much as it once was, Senatore said. "Their same-store sales versus their direct competitors have been much more similar than different," she said. "Whereas, if you look at its long-term history, McDonald's has historically outpaced their competitors." McDonald's did not respond to CBS MoneyWatch's request for comment on the strategy behind its menu changes. Return of the Snack Wrap Perhaps the most highly anticipated new menu item is the Snack Wrap, which is returning to McDonald's establishments nationwide on this week after a nine-year hiatus. The wrap, which consists of a white-flour tortilla filled with chicken, shredded lettuce and cheese, was nixed in 2016, sparking a social media campaign by fans lobbying for its return. "Given that they're looking for sales drivers, it makes sense that they would go to their archives, if you will," Senatore said. The revived Snack Wrap will come in two flavors — Ranch and Spicy — and will be priced at $2.99, according to a McDonald's spokesperson. The main protein will consist of chicken strips — easier to prepare, and thus less labor-intensive, than the type of chicken McD's previously used in the wrap, which required more cutting, Senatore explained. Reviving the Snack Wrap is a strategic decision on McDonald's part given the item's cult following. Customers went so far ast to start a petition garnering more than 19,000 signatures urging McDonald's to bring back the Snack Wrap. "Bringing back a product that customers really want to have come back, you typically have higher rate of success," Senatore said. McDonald's is also introducing a new take on its classic Egg McMuffin, with a trio of limited-time breakfast sandwiches featuring spicy pepper sauce. The new items coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Egg McMuffin, a McDonald's staple that consists of egg, cheese and bacon on an English muffin. "Limited-time offerings are always something in the toolkit for quick service restaurants to drive traffic," Todd said. Other menu tweaks include a new home for the Daily Double, one of McDonald's burger offerings. The Daily Double will now be part of the the McValue deal, where it will be bundled with fries, Chicken McNuggets, and a small soft drink for $6 or $7, depending on the location. McDonald's has also upped its chicken offerings. In May, the chain launched a new item called McCrispy Strips nationwide, the first time since 2021 McDonald's debuted a new permanent menu item in the U.S, according to a company statement. Todd said McDonald's and other industry players are emphasizing chicken meals given its popularity and that it is significantly cheaper than beef, which rose to record prices in May. "We've been seeing tons of chicken offerings, and just chicken... in general being very successful," he said. Sneak peek: Who Killed Aileen Seiden in Room 15? Gird your loins, McDonald's fans: the Snack Wrap is back this summer

McDonald's fans have been very busy in the past ten years—ever since the beloved Snack Wrap was discontinued in 2016, diners have been asking the world-famous fast-food chain to bring back the treat. McD's devotees have desperately taken to social media and even created a petition that garnered almost 19,000 signatures in an effort to see the wrap on the menu again. And now those Snack Wrap dreams are coming true: the fan-favorite menu item is officially returning to participating McDonald's restaurants on Thursday, July 10. For those who aren't familiar, the Snack Wrap is a soft flour tortilla holding McCrispy strips—all-white-meat chicken strips that are breaded and fried—topped with lettuce, a mix of cheddar jack and Monterey Jack cheeses and your choice of sauce (ranch, honey mustard or salsa roja). The roll-up comes in two flavors: The spicy version has a touch of habanero pepper, a flavor aficionados might recognize from the Spicy McCrispy sandwich already on the menu, while the ranch option has those classic hints of garlic and onion. The Snack Wrap was phased out nationally in 2016, and now as we hit summer 2025 and its blistering temperatures, we have a chance to eat the chain's sole menu item that isn't hot (other than the desserts and beverages). It's a healthier option than many on the menu, coming in at less than 300 calories. And, as folks who created the petition point out, it's the perfect snack for a road trip because you can hold it in one hand and drive with the other.
