'You Said It's True?' Of Course, Danny DeVito And Charlie Day Had The Funniest Reactions To Rob Mac's Name Change

One of TV's longest-running and best sitcoms is set to return to the 2025 TV schedule this week, and I could not be more excited. Season 17 of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia will premiere on FXX this Wednesday, July 9th, with back-to-back episodes, but we are in for more than just new shenanigans from The Gang. Alongside this new season, Rob McElhenney will also be debuting his new name, Rob Mac, and his castmates, Danny DeVito and Charlie Day, had the funniest reactions to the news. No, it's not a joke. Rob McElhenney is legally changing his name to Rob Mac. In an announcement posted to Instagram, the It's Always Sunny co-creator explained the reasoning behind his new 'stage' name. However, apparently not everyone got the memo. In a Tik Tok via Decider, Danny Devito shared his confusion live on stage during a recent Hulu press event for the new season: Wait, woah, whoah, whoah. You said it's true?...I swear to god, I looked at the credits and thought they were fucked up. Somebody screwed it up, they took the… This honestly is very similar to how I would expect DeVito's character Frank Reynolds to act, and as it's a typical Sunny cast interaction, Charlie Day had a very Charlie Kelly response, resulting in the following hilarious back and forth: Charlie Day: Wait, Danny, let me tell you a story about my old, old friend here. Spell McElhenney…Spell it. Danny DeVito: I barely got through eighth grade. Charlie Day: OK, alright, see that's why. See this is why I love this cast. I feel like half the time, they aren't even really acting, they're just messing around as a friend group while on camera. At this point, they've all been together for at least 2 decades, given the show just celebrated its 20th anniversary. However, even the Fist Fight actor, who has known McElhenney much longer than that, admitted to still struggling with the spelling, saying: I've known you for 30 years, and the other day I went to go and write your name out in an email, and I was like 'Wait, M, C, E, L..' I wish you went with Blaze, which is what you called yourself in eighth grade. And your teacher called you Blaze for a year. Hulu: 30-Day Free TrialHulu will give you access to originals as well as FX content, which includes It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For as little as $9.99 per month, you can get ad-supported plans for the service that houses content from ABC, FX and more. View Deal While this is also on brand for Day's Sunny character, who is illiterate, he's one of many many people to have trouble with his friend's former surname over the years. When I first started writing about It's Always Sunny, I remember having to look up the spelling for McElhenney almost every time, so I completely understand the switch. The real question is why he didn't do it sooner. After justifying the Mythic Quest actor's recent decision, Day brought up Mac's former grade school nickname, Blaze. The Lost actor admitted to going by Blaze for an entire year when his 10th-grade teacher asked the class if they had any nicknames. The funniest part? He had actually responded with 'Blade', but failed to correct her when she misheard. Check out the full hilarious interaction below: While Rob Blaze is pretty badass, I think the Wrexham owner made the right call. As to how this affects his kids' and wife's name, Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson, it doesn't. The celebrity duo told People that they are leaving the decision to keep McElhenney up to each individual person in their family. If you are looking for a change to the High Potential star's name in the credits of Sunny on Wednesday, you won't find it. The Sweet Dee actress, while legally Olson-McElhenney, has always just gone by her maiden name, Olson, when it comes to her TV and movie credits. However, she has been known to occasionally respond to 'Shut up, Bird!' when spotted by fans in public. Be sure to catch (formerly) McElhenney's first official credit as Rob Mac this Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on FXX, or the next day with your Hulu subscription.

Wrexham owner's 'heartbreaking' transfer bombshell after player's statement

One of Wrexham's co-owners has opened up on the emotional impact of parting ways with a star player this summer following the club's promotion to the Championship Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has shared his heartache upon discovering the exit of a beloved player through social media. The Welsh club has bid farewell to a number of key players since their triumphant rise to the Championship in April. The most notable departures included seasoned goalkeeper Mark Howard and experienced forward Steven Fletcher. Last month, it was also revealed that Wrexham 's star striker Paul Mullin would be moving to Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan after losing his place in the team under manager Phil Parkinson last term. ‌ McElhenney, who is in the process of legally changing his name to Rob Mac, has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of parting with players who have significantly contributed to the club's achievements. ‌ The actor and co-creator of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' disclosed that he learned of one squad member's summer departure only after reading about it on X, previously known as Twitter. Speaking on the Pardon My Take podcast, McElhenney expressed his surprise after not being informed by Parkinson about the player's release but stood by the decision made by the ex-Bolton and Sunderland manager. The 48-year-old said: "I found out one of my favourite players was released from the team this year. I found out via Twitter and I was just as shocked as he was. It was his statement, and the manager hadn't told us yet. ‌ "He talked to the player, which is what he should have done, the player talked to his teammates and then put out a statement, which is his right to do. My heart was broken and I did not see it coming. "The players will often play themselves out of a job. This happened with a few of our players where they gave their hearts, their souls and their effort and helped us get promoted. ‌ "For that, us, the club and the town are eternally grateful. But what winds up happening is, you go up a league, and maybe they're 36 or 37 years old, and you need somebody who's 21 or 22. They accept that, but it still doesn't make it easy and it's not fun." Wrexham were competing in the National League when McElhenney and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds initially purchased the club in February 2021. The North Wales side has since secured three consecutive promotions, with the Hollywood duo helping propel the team into the second tier. ‌ During the interview, McElhenney revealed how he first approached Reynolds about joining his quest to acquire a football club. He also shared the cautionary words he received from his wife, Kaitlin Olson, before reaching out to the Canadian. "I went back recently and I found the original email that I sent to him where I laid out the idea and what I wanted to do," McElhenney said. "Originally, I was going to do it on my own and ask Ryan if he wanted to be a sponsor with Aviation Gin as the front of kit sponsor. ‌ "The more I thought about it, the more I realised that he's such an entrepreneur. He's globally famous, whatever he touches seems to turn to gold and if I could potentially include him as a partner, that could take this thing into the stratosphere. "I remember asking my wife about it, and I said, 'Caitlin, what do you think about me asking Ryan to be a full partner on this?' She said, 'I don't know. I guess it depends on whether your ego can take sharing the screen with Ryan.'". Sharing the secret behind their ownership success, he added: "We were honest from the very beginning, and we went in with our hearts on our sleeves and said, 'We don't know anything about football.' I was not even a fan of the beautiful game up until five years ago, and now I'm horrifically addicted." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Rob McElhenney defends name change in cheeky video

Rob McElhenney isn't making any apologies over his decision to change his name, but he is making a few jokes about it. The 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' star addressed the move amid reports he has filed paperwork to change his name. 'Yes, I'm shortening my name to Rob Mac,' he said in the July 1 clip he posted on X, confirming the news himself. 'Mostly a stage name, but I digress.' He then used his trademark humor to explain just what has gone into his decision. 'The amount of time that I have wasted trying to get people to either say or spell my name correctly is literally days of my life,' he said, as quick clips of others saying his name wrong played in the middle of him speaking, 'Trust me, I added it up. 'More importantly, it means thousands of you have had minutes of your life stolen by me because of my last name.' McElhenney playfully pointed out the false connection the family has to the moniker. 'Still, it's a family name,' he said. 'My grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and I all share it, and I love them and I want to stay connected. There's heritage. Except, it's not even really our f------ name." He then explained how different generations have changed the spelling of it. 'The current one was just given to my ancestor by a government official who decided that this was now the spelling,' he said, while also revealing his great-great-grandmother went by Bridget McIllhenny. McElhenney then dove into how ridiculous the whole matter is. 'Times have changed and most people already call me Rob Mac anyway,' he said. 'My family knows me and loves me regardless of how many syllables I have, and that's the only thing that I really care about. There are so many things going on in the world, and this is a silly one to continue to waste your time with.' McElhenney also said he's OK with whatever name people want to give him, using the actual first names of celebrities as their pictures appeared on the screen. 'Honestly, call me whatever you want: Marion, Jerome, Archibald, Eric, Maurice, Stephanie, Frances, Marvin, Gordon or Sam. But maybe we just keep it simple and try Rob Mac. Let's see how it goes,' he said. In May, McElhenney opened up about how he was mulling over a name change in the wake of his multimedia company, More Better Industries, adding to its global portfolio. 'As our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I'm just going by Rob Mac,' he told Variety. The level of difficulty in pronouncing 'McElhenney' is old hat. In 2023, his friend and fellow co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C. soccer club, Ryan Reynolds, released a humorous video about how to say it. 'It's Mackle-Henney, it's Mackle-Henney,' Reynolds sang with a roster of guest stars, including McElhenney's wife, Kaitlin Olson, and Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce.
