Aussie Olympian announces birth of first child, reveals name
Australian Olympic gold medallist Cam McEvoy has announced the birth of his son, and he has revealed the name choice holds a special meaning. On Monday, the 50 metre freestyle champion confirmed the news on Instagram to his 152,000 followers. Hartley James McEvoy was born on 10th July, with McEvoy saying the name is 'an ode to the strength of the heart'. The moniker is a tribute to his wife Maddi, who has endured heart problems throughout her life. Born with a pulmonary valve defect, she has had four open-heart surgeries - including a valve replacement when she was 17. McEvoy shared that her medical experiences were fresh on their minds during the delivery of their baby. 'We had a well thought out birthing plan because of Maddi's heart which basically involved as little pain as possible to keep her heart rate down,' McEvoy said. 'But Hartley seemed to have different plans - it was fast, wild, calm, and beautiful all at the same time.' The Olympian ended his announcement post on a sweet note, after telling followers that 'mum and baby are both doing exceptionally well'. 'A little H(e)art goes a long way ❤️❤️.' The Olympic swimmer shared a photo of him holding his son. Credit: Instagram The comments were quickly flooded with well-wishes for the family from fellow Olympian swimmers. 'He's beautiful Cam! Congratulations to you both,' eight-time medallist Cate Campbell commented. 'What a beautiful boy, we will have the cutest fan club,' three-time champion Sarah Sjostrom said. 'He's already a stud,' Australian swimming legend Grant Hackett said. Back in February, the Paris 2024 medallist stunned many of his followers when he revealed he had secretly wed Maddi. The couple shared the happy news with a single photo of them on their wedding day, captioned with the word 'eloped'.

Music industry contributes €1bn to Irish economy
The Irish music industry contributes €1 billion annually to the Irish economy, according to a new report published today by IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation). The report also states however, that despite the significant levels of interest and spending on music in Ireland, the dream of becoming a professional musician "remains out of the reach of many." In 'Music report 2025', IMRO found that live events (gigs and festivals) dominate consumer expenditure, generating €786 million annually. The research states that concerts in high-capacity venues account for the largest share at €298 million, while the average spend on music festivals is €194 million. IMRO Chairperson and singer/songwriter Eleanor McEvoy said that "at the heart of this report is a clear truth: Irish people don't just enjoy music - they live it." However, Ms McEvoy also pointed out IMRO's view that there is a need to ensure that musicians are "fairly compensated in the streaming economy", protected from emerging risks such as "unregulated AI," and supported through initiatives like Basic Income for the Arts and Section 481 reforms. The report provides information on consumer spending on streaming services, stating that the spend reached €375m in 2024 with 53% of adults subscribing to services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music. Spotify is the most popular streaming service the research found. The report also states that the average adult spends approximately €1,000 per year on music related products and services, with a spend of €757 per year on music events. The balance is spent on streaming, merchandise, and other music related products including physical media such as vinyl and CDs. This new research states that the Irish music industry employs over 13,400 people, however it warns that the work is "seasonal" and not a full time job. Concerns were raised at the cost of accessing music experiences, with two thirds of adults flagging the cost of tickets as the main barrier to attending gigs and almost half (49%) highlighting accommodation costs as another issue facing fans going to music events. IMRO highlights the organisation's concerns that despite significant consumer spending, many Irish artists struggle to make a living as annual income for full time music professionals is almost 40% lower than national average. The members are calling for better financial support and robust protections for music creators, including fair remuneration and safeguards against the "misuse of AI". Among the recommendations listed in the report, IMRO is seeking "specific tax incentives for using Irish music within Audiovisual productions", and continuation of support for Ireland's grassroots music venues. Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Media Alan Kelly launched the report and said that while he welcomes the findings, the report serves as a timely reminder that "passion alone" cannot sustain a career in music, adding that too many artists and songwriters are grappling with "financial insecurity," exacerbated by the unfair distribution of streaming revenues and the "growing challenges posed by AI". Deputy Kelly also said that "Government must take these findings seriously." IMRO was set up to administer the performing right in copyright music on behalf of its members (songwriters, composers and music publishers) and on behalf of members of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it.

Dublin stabbing victim named locally as gardaí investigate feud link to attack
Joseph McEvoy (34), a father of two young boys and step-father to a girl, died after he was set upon at a house on Shancastle Close in Clondalkin at around 5.50am this morning. He suffered multiple stab wounds after being attacked by another man and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A suspect aged in his 40s has been arrested as part of the investigation and remains in garda custody. Gardaí believe Mr McEvoy's murder is linked to a violent local feud which has seen over 50 incidents reported in the past year. Detectives are also investigating a spate of attacks in the lead up to his death including an arson on a car, another vehicle being rammed, and a petrol bomb attack on a house. Following these incidents a man arrived at the house in Shancastle Close and attacked Mr McEvoy, who suffered fatal injuries. The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested by armed gardaí. Although Mr McEvoy was known to people involved in the feuding, he is not suspected of having any involvement in the violence himself. One source said: 'At this stage all these reported incidents appear to be connected and are linked to a local feud in the area. 'One line of inquiry is that the fatal assault was an escalation from what happened earlier in the night'. Quarryvale Football Club today paid tribute to Mr McEvoy, saying it is 'devastated' by the loss of their club captain. 'The nicest man you'd ever meet and an absolute warrior on the pitch. Big Joe Mac was the life of every party, and nothing will feel he same with him gone. Our thoughts and prayer are with his family at this horrible time'. Gardaí earlier preserved the stabbing scene for examination and also cordoned off other sites in the area as they conducted house-to-house enquiries. Members of the Garda Technical Bureau were carrying out a forensic examination of the scene. Gardaí maintained a presence all day as floral tributes were left at the scene of the fatal attack. In a statement gardaí said they were alerted to an incident at a home in the Shancastle area at around 5.50am on Monday. The man was found unresponsive and brought to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, where he was later pronounced dead. The scene is preserved while gardaí carry out an examination. The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have both been notified, with a postmortem set to be carried out. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been set up at Lucan garda station. A Family Liaison Officer will be assigned to support the family of the victim. The man who was arrested in connection with the investigation is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a garda station in the Dublin area. Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. They are also appealing to anyone with camera footage, including motorists with dashcam footage from the area between 5am and 6am on Monday, July 7, to contact them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lucan garda station on (01) 666 7300, the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station. Investigations are ongoing.
