Detroit Tigers utility player Zach McKinstry named to 2025 MLB All-Star Game
In his sixth season in the majors, Detroit Tigers utility player Zach McKinstry has been selected for his first MLB All-Star Game as a reserve replacement. It was announced on the big screen at Comerica Park on Wednesday, July 9, and met with a roar from the crowd. McKinstry missed out on the initial round of All-Star selections, but is now the fifth Tiger named to the 2025 American League All-Star team along with ace Tarik Skubal, second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Javier Báez and Riley Greene. Of the five Tigers named to the 2025 All-Star team, only McKinstry is a first-time All-Star. Greene, Báez and Torres will all be starters. Advertisement The quintet of Tigers will suit up for the AL in the 95th iteration of the All-Star Game at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 (Fox) at Atlanta's Truist Park. The five All-Star nods are the most for the franchise since six Tigers (Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander) made the 2013 AL squad. McKinstry is in his third season with the Tigers organization after arriving from the Chicago Cubs via trade on March 27, 2023. He played in 148 games in 2023 but had a below-average season at the plate, while his batting regressed even further over 118 games in 2024. But McKinstry is having his best season ever in 2025. Advertisement The Central Michigan alumnus — the first-ever MLB All-Star from CMU — entered Saturday slashing .289/.361/.462 for a career-high .823 OPS in 303 plate appearances over 80 games for the Tigers in 2025. That includes a career-high eight triples, good for second in the American League. McKinstry is also on pace to set career highs in hits, home runs and RBIs, and is tied for third among regular Tigers in OPS+ (130), behind Greene (150) and Torres (131). As well as McKinstry has been hitting, he has arguably been even more valuable on defense. On a roster featuring many multi-positional players, McKinstry is perhaps the most versatile, having made starts at five different positions for the Tigers in 2025. He's also second on the team in Statcast's Fielding Run Value (2) behind catcher Dillon Dingler (8). As a result of his defensive utility and improved offense, McKinstry is second on the team among position players in both FanGraphs' and Baseball Reference's version of WAR (2.7 and 2.6, respectively). His 2.6 bWAR is already double his previous season-high, 1.3 in 2023. He has also provided exceptional value on the basepaths, landing in the 96th percentile in baserunning run value according to Statcast. Now it's time for an All-Star party McKinstry fell off the All-Star ballot after Phase 1 of voting, finishing 76,000 votes shy of second-place finisher Alex Bregman among AL third basemen. Cleveland's José Ramirez finished in first place with 2.7 million votes and went on to win the AL All-Star starting spot in Phase 2 voting. MLB All-Star Game set for historic robot umpire debut with live pitch challenge and automated strike zone system (Image via Getty) Major League Baseball is stepping into the future, and it's happening sooner than expected. The 2025 MLB All-Star Game is set to test a brand-new technology that could change the sport forever. With robot umpires and a live challenge system for calling balls and strikes, this year's All-Star event might become one of the most talked-about games in recent history. MLB introduces automated strike zone with challenge system in 2025 All-Star Game The MLB All-Star Game, scheduled for next week, will debut the automated balls and strikes challenge system for the first time ever. This move, confirmed by U.S. News & World Report and other reliable sources, will allow pitchers, catchers, or batters to challenge ball or strike calls during the game. Each team will have two challenges, and if a challenge is successful, the team gets to keep it. This real-time review process will be handled through a robotic strike zone system, also known as ABS (Automated Ball-Strike System). While robot umpires have been tested in minor leagues before, this marks their first official use in an MLB All-Star Game. The pitch challenge will be shown live, bringing fans even closer to the action. The league hopes this experiment will give insight into how fans, players, and officials respond to the tech. Many believe it will reduce bad calls and bring more fairness to the game. Zach McKinstry joins All-Star lineup as Detroit Tigers and Dodgers lead in picks As the All-Star Game builds excitement, Zach McKinstry of the Detroit Tigers has been added as an All-Star replacement, according to the Associated Press. The Tigers and Dodgers now head the league in overall All-Star choices. The Detroit Tigers are proud of McKinstry's arrival, and supporters are anxiously awaiting his performance. Zach McKinstry picked as AL All-Star sub; Tigers tie Dodgers for most Midsummer Classic picks
The Detroit Tigers have the best record in the majors. Now they are tied for having the most All-Stars, too. Zach McKinstry was picked Wednesday to replace Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, who has been dealing with a rib injury. The infielder-outfielder will join Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Javier Báez and Riley Greene — all AL starters — and staff ace Tarik Skubal, who also is among the candidates to start the All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Atlanta. The five All-Stars for Detroit is tied for the most with the World Series champion Dodgers, who have DH Shohei Ohtani, catcher Will Smith and first baseman Freddie Freeman starting for the NL along with pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Yamamoto is scheduled to start Sunday for Los Angeles, so Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott has been picked to replace him. McKinstry was among several replacements announced Wednesday for the Midsummer Classic. Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes was chosen for the AL team in place of starting third baseman José Ramírez, the seven-time All-Star, who wants to spend the week rehabbing an Achilles injury; Twins right-hander Joe Ryan was selected as the replacement for Astros pitcher Hunter Brown; and Brewers closer Trevor Megill was added to the NL team in place of teammate Freddy Peralta, their scheduled starter for Sunday's game against Washington. The shuffling of replacements gives the Astros four All-Stars in Paredes, Peña, Brown and pitcher Josh Hader. The Brewers have two in Megill and Peralta. And the Twins have two with Ryan joining two-time All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton. 'This was the goal in the offseason,' said Megill, who struck out Freeman, Andy Pages and Tommy Edman in order in the 10th inning to secure the Brewers' 3-2 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday. 'Just worked my butt off for it, and here we are.' The four replacements make six total and 71 players players between the two All-Star teams. The other sub announced was Rays third baseman Junior Caminero for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. The Tigers have been one of the surprise stories of the first half of the season. After going 86-76 and tying for second in the AL Central last season, they are off to a 59-35 start even after a 7-3 loss to the Rays in their series finale Wednesday night. The versatile McKinstry has been a big reason why. Along with playing every infield position besides catcher, and both corner outfield spots, McKinstry entered Wednesday hitting .283 with seven homers and 27 RBIs. The 30-year-old needs just three more homers and nine RBIs to set career highs. Peña, who is hitting a career-best .322 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 82 games for Houston, has been out since June 28 with a fractured rib. He had hoped to return by the All-Star break but has not been cleared to resume baseball activity. Paredes, his teammate, is headed to his second straight All-Star Game in his first season in Houston. He is hitting a career-best .255 with 19 homers and 49 RBIs for the Astros, who have a comfortable lead over Seattle in the NL West. 'My main focus is to work hard for the team and be able to give the most I can for the team,' Paredes said, 'but as you can see now with the results that I'm getting ... those results allow me to get to the All-Star game, so it feels good.' Ramírez was hit by a pitch in a game against Toronto on June 26 and has struggled at the plate since, though he said Wednesday that it was an Achilles injury that's been bothering him. Even with the slump, Ramírez began the day hitting .299 with 16 home runs, 44 RBIs and 24 stolen bases through 87 games for Cleveland. 'Everybody wants to go to the All-Star Game and especially for the support from the fans,' Ramírez said. 'But I feel the best thing for the team is to be able to be resting (those) days and be able to contribute to the team in the second half.' The 29-year-old Ryan, whose name has surfaced in plenty of trade talk recently, was one of the biggest snubs when the initial All-Star Game rosters were announced. The right-hander is 8-4 with a career-best 2.76 ERA across 18 starts, and he's struck out 116 against just 21 walks over 104 1/3 innings for the Twins. 'The last couple years, I've had really good numbers at voting, then I've kind of scuttled the last two outings or so. I can see why optically it might not look as good,' Ryan said. 'But putting it together, it was kind of a shock not to be in (this year). 'At the same time,' he said, 'there's so many good pitchers in the league right now. You've just got to hang with them and if you don't like it, play better. That was kind of the mindset I was trying to shift into, but to get the news and be excited to go, it makes everything kind of go away and you just think about the future and going forward.'

That gives the Astros four All-Stars in Peña and pitchers Hunter Brown and Josh Hader. The Guardians said Ramírez wanted 'to focus on recovery and preparation for the second half of the season.' Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill also was added to the NL All-Star team Wednesday, shortly after he struck out Freddie Freeman, Andy Pages and Tommy Edman in order in the 10th inning to earn the win in the Brewers' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Megill earned his first career All-Star selection by going 2-2 with a 2.41 ERA, 21 saves and 43 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. "This was the goal in the offseason," Megill said. 'Just worked my butt off for it, and here we are.'
