Overall, 1,266 (3.06%) of the STPM 2024 candidates scored a perfect 4.00 CGPA, the highest in the examination's history. In 2023, the number of 4.00 scorers were 1,116. The number of candidates who scored 5As in all five subjects also increased from 41 in STPM 2023 to 53 this year. Meanwhile, those who achieved 4As rose to 1,228 candidates, up from 1,087 in 2023. About 10.71% of all candidates had a CGPA of 3.75 and above, 44.97% had a CGPA of 3.00 and above, 58.96% had a CGPA of 2.75 and above, and 90.10% had a CGPA of 2.00 and above. This marked an overall improvement from 2023, said Malaysian Examinations Council (MPM) chairman Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff. 'With more candidates achieving these CGPAs, it is hoped that there will be no obstacles for them to receive offers to study in public universities,' he said at MPM's office here yesterday. All 23 subjects offered, he said, saw more than 60% of candidates achieving grade C and above – a full pass. He added that with the increase in the national CGPA by 0.01 from 2023 to 2.85 this year, and with STPM's internationally recognised standards and quality, he urges more SPM students to consider STPM as their first choice. A total of 41,434 candidates sat for the examinations for all three STPM 2024 semesters. During the award presentation ceremony to top scorers, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek reaffirmed the government's commitment to making Form Six a top post-SPM choice for students. 'Hopefully, with these better results, along with improved incentives and initiatives, we can continue to enhance the quality of Form Six students in the coming years,' she added. She also announced the formation of the Form 6 Madani generation representative council under her purview. 'We are streamlining the Form Six council, where all Form Six student associations will operate under its umbrella,' she said. Fadhlina added that through this effort, the ministry aims to build a Form Six leadership team, particularly to nurture the next generation of national leaders. 'These students will be given the opportunity to be with me and experience the leadership process through an internship programme we call 'Sanggar Bitara',' she said. She said the students will observe how leadership operates and how policy decisions are made, adding that programmes like this – along with the Form Six council – must be supported to help shape these students into future leaders as part of Malaysia's regeneration programme. Meanwhile, Fadhlina also said that 300 scholarships are reserved for outstanding STPM graduates pursuing education degrees in public institutions. She said the ministry is focusing its attention on supporting talented and competent individuals who have achieved good STPM results to further their studies in the field of education. 'I hope that STPM graduates will apply and look into this offer to further their studies in the field of education,' she said. Separately, Fadhlina also stated that the MPM will be implementing a mechanism referred to as 'patching', which enables STPM students to retake selected subjects within the same academic year to improve their grades and university admission prospects.

Family comforted by visits

Thousands pay their respects at late UPSI student's home daily JERTIH: A week has passed since the tragic bus accident on the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak, but the home of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student Nurly Shahirah Azman continues to receive some 1,000 people daily. Her brother, Mohd Najmuddin, 28, said people from across the country have been arriving to convey their condolences and view the handwritten Quran manuscript completed by the late student. 'People have come from as far as Penang to offer their sympathies to our parents and see the mushaf (manuscript) that was meticulously copied by hand by my sister. 'Some arrive as early as after the Subuh prayers, and it's only around Maghrib that the house becomes a bit quieter,' he told Bernama when met at their home in Kampung Gong Pasir here yesterday. He said aside from family members, neighbours and fellow villagers have also been helping to prepare meals and drinks for the guests. Meanwhile, Nurly Shahirah's father, Azman Mohamad, 63, said the outpouring of support, including from strangers, has provided some comfort as the family copes with their loss. In the early morning of June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the JRTB in Gerik. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the MPV. In Ipoh, UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff called on the university's faculty members, deans and lecturers to help in managing the affected students' welfare. In an online briefing held yesterday, Md Amin highlighted the need to support the families of the students who perished in the crash as well as their injured colleagues. He urged academic staff to ensure that matters related to the affected students' exams, assignments and academic affairs are properly managed, whether the students are recovering in hospital or at home. 'Do everything possible so that these students do not have to defer their studies despite being in pain and going through hardship. 'We have many flexible learning system. Make sure they are not left behind. 'These children need our attention, our assistance and our encouragement. 'We must ensure none of them are left to struggle or end up failing not because they didn't try, but because we failed to support them,' said Md Amin. He also reminded staff and other students to be mindful of the classmates of those who died or were injured. 'Imagine preparing a presentation with five names, but only three students show up. Imagine a dormitory where four used to stay, and only two remain,' said Md Amin in his message.

UPSI VC urges full support to keep injured students on track this semester

IPOH: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff urged the university community to ensure that students injured in the recent accident along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, do not fall behind or defer their studies this semester. He called for students still undergoing treatment, either in hospital or at home, to be fully supported in managing their academic assignments and examinations, to prevent anyone from being left behind. 'These students are in pain. But we have a flexible learning system to ensure they stay on course. 'This is a personal message from the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, to me. It is also a heartfelt command from His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah,' he said during a special online briefing today with UPSI staff and faculty. Md Amin added that UPSI students who voluntarily stepped in to help their injured peers must also be given due care, recognition and support for their compassion and service. 'The well-being of surviving classmates must be a priority. Imagine a group presentation where only three names are called, instead of five. Imagine a dorm room where just two friends remain, staring at an empty bed that once belonged to someone they cared about. 'This is more than duty—it is charity, it is reward, it is our act of devotion. Let us be there for these students in their darkest hour,' he implored. Md Amin also announced that a special prayer ceremony (Tahlil Perdana) will be held this evening at the Dewan Tuanku Canselor, Sultan Azlan Shah Campus in Tanjung Malim to honour the victims, which will be attended by Zambry and several dignitaries. 'I welcome everyone to attend. The ceremony will also include the presentation of donation cheques from various agencies, with total contributions estimated to exceed RM1 million, aimed at supporting those affected,' he said.
