Police issue warning after permanent ice shack in central Wisconsin goes through the ice

ROME, Wis. (WFRV) – Police in central Wisconsin issued a warning on Tuesday after a permanent ice shack went through a lake. The Rome Police Department said that the shack is in Upper Camelot Lake and that with warm weather the past few days and coming soon, people must practice caution on the lakes. If a permanent ice shack goes through the ice owners will be held liable and have 30 days to remove them. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminding ice fishers to remove shanties ahead of deadlines

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – As the deadlines approach, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding ice fishers to remove their permanent ice shanties from state waters soon. Each state water area has a specific deadline, with one passing on Thursday, February 20, as permanent ice shanties on Wisconsin-Iowa boundary waters must have been removed by now. Pelkin's Smokey Meat Market brings MeatFest back to Resch Expo for third year The other dates, provided by the DNR are as follows: Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary waters gone on or before March 1 Inland waters south of Highway 64 by March 2 Wisconsin-Michigan boundary waters gone on or before March 15 Ice shanties on the following waters must be gone by March 16: Lake Michigan Green Bay Lake Superior Inland waters north of Highway 64 Those wishing to use portable ice shanties can still do so after these dates, but they must be removed from the ice when not in use. More details on shanty removal requirements are available in the DNR's guide to hook and line fishing regulations. Appleton Police Department promote the importance of safe internet use for children Those who need help removing a shanty can contact local fishing clubs, vendors and other anglers. Anybody who doesn't take responsibility for their shanty removal should be reported to the DNR's Violation Hotline by calling or texting 1-800-TIP-WNDR or 1-800-847-9367. The DNR continues to remind ice fishers that the ice is never 100% safe and that they should check with local fishing clubs or bait shops to check current conditions before removing their shanty.
