Lucknow: The fortnight-long second phase of School Chalo Abhiyan will be launched across the state on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the academic session 2025–26. The govt has released Rs 2 lakh to every district for smooth execution of campaign. "This is not merely an enrollment drive, but a dedicated effort to bring education to children who are out of school. All govt primary schools will be cleaned, beautified, and decorated in a festive manner as they reopen on July 1 after the summer vacation," an official said. "Children will be welcomed with 'roli-chandan' (auspicious red turmeric paste), garlands, and delightful traditional food items. The mid-day meal will include special dishes like 'halwa' and 'kheer', making the experience of warmth, celebration, and motivation," he added. As part of the campaign, teachers, instructors, shiksha mitras, and SMC (school management committee) members will go door-to-door to ensure maximum enrollment. Efforts will be made to identify school dropouts and out-of-school children, and to engage with their parents. "Special emphasis will be laid on enrolling and retaining girls who have dropped out due to household responsibilities or societal reasons. Meena Manch platforms will be activated in schools, using plays and storytelling to raise awareness about the importance of girls' education," he said. TNN

Students from four KGBVs shine in story-writing contest

Lucknow: In a remarkable display of talent and environmental awareness, stories written by students from four Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Uttar Pradesh have been selected for state-level honours during a recent story-writing competition on climate change. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Out of over 580 entries, 18 outstanding stories were chosen which embodied critical themes such as water conservation, urban pollution, rising temperatures, and the plight of the planet through the perspective of animals. The schools that were recognised included KGBVs in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad (1st); Gaura, Kanpur Dehat (2nd); Muftiganj, Jaunpur (3rd); and Dewa, Barabanki (4th). This initiative aimed to instil critical thinking and creative expression in students, allowing them to articulate pressing environmental issues, a govt spokesperson said. Conducted under the Meena Manch programme, the competition was supported by interactive online sessions led by Anita Bhatnagar Jain, inspiring students to explore environmental concerns. Each narrative stressed the importance of addressing climate change and conveyed messages of hope and solutions. As part of the recognition, winners will receive a signed copy of 'Kukkaru', a book by Jain focused on environmental awareness for children. Basic education minister Sandeep Singh, emphasized the importance of engaging children in environmental education through creativity, illuminating their path to becoming responsible citizens.
