Sitharaman on 4-day Meghalaya visit to launch 1500cr projects

Shillong: Union minister of finance and corporate affairs Nirmala Sitharaman arrived here Thursday on a four-day visit to the state to launch projects worth over Rs 1,500 crore. She will be present at the launch and foundation stone laying ceremonies of several marquee projects being taken up by the govt under the leadership of CM Conrad K Sangma. On Thursday, the finance minister inaugurated the the Polo Shopping Complex — a Rs 100-crore project under the Smart City Mission. Welcoming her, the CM said, "We have eagerly awaited this program for a very long time. I have been working with our finance minister for many years, and she has always been kind and considerate towards Meghalaya and the entire northeast". Following the inauguration, the finance minister chaired the North East Roundtable on the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme, engaging with the scheme interns in an interactive session to understand their experiences as well as feedback on future developments of the scheme, Notably, Meghalaya is set to unveil a series of transformative infrastructure and development projects, as part of its push for economic growth, sustainable tourism, digital inclusion, and women's empowerment. As part of Meghalaya's vision to strengthen its public infrastructure, key projects will be launched on Friday during Sitharaman's visit to the Lariti Auditorium in Shillong. The Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy, 2025, reflecting the state's growing prowess as a destination for film tourism will also be launched by Sitharaman. Another key moment of the visit will be the flagging-off of premium pineapples from Meghalaya to Lulu Group, Dubai, marking a breakthrough in the state's agri-export potential. "Organised under the IFAD-supported Megha-LAMP initiative, the consignment reflects Meghalaya's growing integration with global markets and its support for farmer collectives," an official statement said. Shillong: A cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday approved the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy, 2025. "After receiving over 200 stakeholder feedback on the Draft Meghalaya Film Policy, we incorporated the inputs and presented the final policy to the cabinet for approval. Recognising Meghalaya's potential as a filmmaking hub in the northeast, we are launching the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025 to tap into this opportunity," he said. A dedicated film facilitation cell has been formed, comprising representatives from tourism, arts & culture, DIPR, and other departments to coordinate efforts and promote Meghalaya as a premier film destination. "We will also offer subsidies across categories to incentivise filmmaking in the state — national & international films: up to Rs 1 crore or 25% of production cost for films (in national or international languages) promoting Meghalaya tourism, with 75% of shooting done in the state. Local films: Rs 50 lakh subsidy for Khasi, Pnar, and Garo language films, available once every two years per filmmaker. TV & OTT content: subsidies available for production of TV serials, web series, and original OTT shows made in Meghalaya. Documentaries & short films: grants provided for films shot in Meghalaya," the CM said.
