Redemption complete for Mendis as Sri Lanka seal ODI series
Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was one of six batters to reach double figures in the Pallekele contest with 28, rued the lack of any meaningful partnerships during the run chase as the Asian side were dismissed in the 40th over in reply. "We just couldn't put together partnerships like Sri Lanka," Mehidy said. "They had a big partnership after they lost three wickets for 100 runs. Partnerships in the middle-overs are crucial. We got a couple of 40s, but winning is hard without these partnerships in ODI cricket." The teams will now play a three-match T20I series, with the first game to be played in Pallekele on Thursday.

SL vs BAN ODI series 2025: Bangladesh turns to younger generation under new captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz
Bangladesh arrives into the three-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka with a fresh look. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has taken over the reins from Najmul Hossain Shanto and the side is clearly in a rebuilding phase with veterans like Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar either retired or out of favour. 'We'll definitely miss our seniors,' said Mehidy. 'They've served Bangladesh cricket for a long time, and their absence leaves a big gap. But this is a chance for the younger boys to put their hands up.' With the next World Cup two years away, the visitor sees this series as a springboard to blood fresh talent. 'This is a good platform to test our bench strength,' Mehidy added. 'We've brought some exciting young players here and it's an opportunity for them to establish their spots.' While Sri Lanka sits comfortably at number four in the ICC ODI rankings, Bangladesh—languishing in 10th—has plenty to play for. A series win would see it leapfrog West Indies into ninth place, keeping its hopes alive for automatic qualification to the next World Cup to be staged in Africa in 2027. 'Every game is important,' Mehidy said. 'We know what's at stake. A series win here will go a long way in our qualification push.' The second ODI will also take place in Colombo on Saturday, before the action shifts to the hill capital of Kandy for the final game at Pallekele on Tuesday. The tour will conclude with a three-match T20I series.

Sri Lanka eye top-three spot in ODI rankings
After finishing ninth in the 2023 World Cup and missing out on a Champions Trophy berth, the islanders have staged a commendable turnaround, notching up series wins against heavyweights India and Australia. That purple patch has propelled them to fourth in the ICC ODI rankings, but skipper Charith Asalanka insists they are not resting on their laurels. "We are happy with our progress, but we're not reading too much into rankings just yet," Asalanka told reporters on the eve of the series opener at the R. Premadasa Stadium. "Our goal is to break into the top three. There's still plenty of room for improvement, and this series is another step towards that." The series comes amidst tweaks to playing conditions that captains are still coming to grips with — particularly the rule regarding the use of balls in the final stretch of an innings. Previously, two new balls were used from either end throughout the 50 overs. Under the revised rule, the fielding side will continue to operate with two balls but must pick one to be used exclusively from the 35th over onwards. "It's something new and we're all still figuring out how to navigate it," said Asalanka. "It changes the dynamic of the death overs — how we bowl, how batters finish. It's a learning curve for everyone." Sri Lanka received a timely boost with all-rounder Milan Rathnayake declared fit after missing the second Test against Bangladesh due to a side strain. However, his inclusion will depend on the team's balance, with spin-bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage also in contention. Bangladesh turn to younger generation Bangladesh, meanwhile, arrive with a fresh look. Mehidy Hasan Miraz Under Observation As Bangladesh Eye Galle Advantage In Sri Lanka Test
As Bangladesh gear up for the opening Test of their Sri Lanka tour in Galle on Tuesday, all eyes are on the availability of key allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who remains under medical observation due to a bout of fever. While his recovery is reportedly progressing, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said the team will make a last-minute decision on Mehidy's inclusion in the playing XI. 'Mehidy is still under observation, but his health is improving. A lot depends on his availability,' Shanto told reporters on the eve of the Test. 'If he is in the team, we can go into the Test with a good combination.' The absence of Mehidy, a vital spin-bowling asset and lower-order contributor, could force Bangladesh to alter their balance on a pitch that is known to dramatically assist spinners as the match progresses. Shanto is confident that Bangladesh's batters can cash in on the early advantage in Galle before the pitch starts to break down and favour spin. In the last five years, the batting average in Galle has dipped drastically each day — from 45.64 on Day 1 to just 20.65 on Day 5 — underlining the importance of making early runs. 'Playing spin may be challenging, but there's also a lot of runs in the first two or three days in Galle,' Shanto said. 'We want to take that opportunity. There will be challenges for the batters, as spinners take a lot of wickets here.' Bangladesh last played a Test in Galle in 2017, and Shanto himself has fond memories of scoring his maiden Test century in Sri Lanka during the 2021 tour in Pallekele. But this will be his first as captain of the island nation. With Tamim Iqbal retired and Shakib Al Hasan unavailable for Tests, Bangladesh continue to navigate a transition period in their red-ball setup. Shanto acknowledged their contributions but stressed the need to focus on the present. 'They [Shakib and Tamim] have not been in the team for the last two or three years. We don't want to think about the past,' Shanto said. 'We have experienced players now who will do well here. I hope those in the team will take the team forward.' The team's struggles this year — with just two wins in ten completed matches across formats — have led to scrutiny. They exited early from the Champions Trophy, lost a home Test to Zimbabwe, and were beaten in the T20I series by both UAE and Pakistan. Still, Shanto believes in the resilience of his squad. 'We came back well in the Zimbabwe series after the Sylhet loss. It will motivate us,' he said. 'We are playing in familiar conditions. We just need to play good cricket, especially the batters. The top order has to provide a good start.' The Bangladesh squad features a balanced blend of youth and experience, and Shanto is pleased with the team's unity and clarity heading into the Galle Test. 'I am happy with the squad. It's a balanced side with options in batting and bowling. We can pick the XI depending on the opposition and conditions,' he said. --IANS
