Amanah to review call for PH to contest Melaka polls solo
The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division yesterday agreed that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary at the next Melaka state election. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Amanah will review a resolution from one of its divisions urging Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest the upcoming Melaka state election on its own. The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division passed the resolution yesterday, with members unanimously agreeing that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary. Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil said the push to go solo may have been driven by overlapping seat claims with Umno. 'Amanah must respect the voice of the grassroots as this is a motion passed during the division's annual meeting,' he said. 'I understand the concerns of grassroots members as many of the seats contested by Amanah overlap with Umno's.' Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda said a final decision on whether to accept or reject the Hang Tuah Jaya resolution would be made at the party's national convention. 'Every view and motion from the grassroots will be considered and must be respected by the leadership,' he said. The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats: 20 held by Barisan Nasional (BN), five by PH, and three by Perikatan Nasional. Disputes over seat allocations in Melaka also surfaced in May when nine Melaka DAP branches proposed an equal split in seats between PH and BN, with each contesting 14 seats in the next election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later said that such discussions were premature as the Melaka polls are only expected to be held next year. The current state assembly term ends in December 2026.

Akmal, Khoo question Azmin's ambitions for Bersatu in Melaka
(From left) Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh told Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali that people in Melaka do not want political leaders who only show up for elections, while Melaka DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong feels Bersatu should 'tone down the big talk'. PETALING JAYA : Bersatu must prove that it has leaders who truly serve the people if it wants to win more state assembly seats in Melaka, said Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh. Responding to Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali's confidence that Bersatu will perform strongly at the next Melaka state election, Akmal, who is also a Melaka executive councillor, said people in the state want leaders who can serve. 'The people want leaders who serve all the time, not just show up when elections are near,' the Merlimau assemblyman told FMT. 'If Bersatu is confident it can take over Melaka, PN (Perikatan Nasional) must prove it has capable leaders.' Melaka DAP chief Khoo Poay Tiong reminded Bersatu not to be boastful ahead of the state election. 'Tone down the big talk and continue fulfilling the responsibilities given by the people,' said the Kota Melaka MP. The state assembly's term will end in November 2026, and an election must be held within 60 days of its dissolution. In a Facebook post yesterday, Azmin said he was sure Bersatu had a promising future in Melaka based on data and analysis from the 15th general election. PN has three assemblymen in the 28-seat Melaka state assembly, with Bersatu having two – Bemban assemblyman Dr Yadzil Yaakub and Sungai Udang assemblyman Aleef Yusof – and PAS one. Rembia assemblyman Jailani Khamis, who was previously part of the government bloc, was moved to the opposition bloc last December after PAS said he joined the party in 2023. Umno suspended Jailani's membership for six years for allegedly sabotaging the party by attending the announcement of the PN candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election in Bakri, Johor.

Seat talks must be on national basis, says Amanah
Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said the coalitions in the unity government must ensure nobody feels slighted during negotiations for nationwide seat distribution. PETALING JAYA : Amanah has urged for seat negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Melaka to be based on the coalitions' national partnership, instead of being focussed on the state alone. Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said it is not right to conduct negotiations in Melaka without considering the distribution of seats nationwide and in other states, Sinar Harian reported. 'For example, we have given seats to BN in Selangor (in the August 2023 state election). As such, BN should also make way for PH in Melaka. 'If negotiations are only focussed on one state, they will ask for more when it comes to other states,' he was quoted as saying. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh recently rejected a proposal from nine Melaka DAP branches for PH and BN to contest 14 seats each in the upcoming state election, telling DAP to 'dream on' after the matter was reported by China Press, a local daily. However, he misinterpreted the report as saying that the proposal was made by nine DAP divisions rather than branches. Melaka DAP publicity secretary Kerk Chee Yee clarified that this was merely a grassroots proposal by the branches and that the state chapter had yet to discuss the matter. The Melaka assembly has 28 seats, 20 of which are held by BN, five by PH and three by Perikatan Nasional. Khalid said the coalitions in the unity government must ensure nobody feels slighted in negotiations for nationwide seat distribution. 'We do not want (a situation in which) only one party benefits while the other has to give way. Negotiations need a give-and-take spirit for the sake of the unity government's stability,' he said.

Melaka polls not till 2026? Zahid slaps down premature seat jockeying
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today urged party members to leave discussions on seat allocations for the upcoming Melaka state election to the party's top leadership. He said such talks were premature, as the Melaka polls are only expected to take place next year, alongside the Johor state election. 'Let's not be emotional, analytical and based only on individual perspectives. Issues like seat distribution and so on, we leave that to our top-level leadership. 'We often meet and hold discussions. So let's not raise this issue, whether from Umno Youth or Amanah Youth. I think it's too premature to politicise this matter,' he told reporters after Umno's 79th anniversary celebrations at the World Trade Centre here. Recently, nine DAP branches in Melaka expressed support for a proposed '14+14' formula, which suggests an equal seat split between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next state election. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh rejected the idea, stressing that BN had no intention of giving up any seats it won in the last election, including those mentioned in the proposal. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the final decision on seat distribution between BN and PH for the state election would be made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ahmad Zahid. Melaka has 28 state assembly seats. In the 2021 state election, BN won 21, PH secured five, and Perikatan Nasional claimed two. The next Melaka state election is expected to be held by November next year at the latest.
