Contractor jailed one day, fined RM6k for assaulting wife
MELAKA: A contractor was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate's Court today for assaulting his wife, causing multiple fractures. Magistrate Sharda Sheinha Mohd Suleiman handed down the sentence after the accused, See Yong Fei, 36, pleaded guilty following an earlier change of plea during the case's mention. According to the charge, the accused intentionally caused grievous harm to his 39-year-old wife by punching her arms and kicking her back, resulting in fractures in several parts of her body. The offence took place at a residence in Taman Desa Bertam on May 7 last year. He was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of seven years and a fine upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the accused assaulted his wife in a fit of anger after she left the house without his permission to go to the market to buy vegetables. He also disapproved of her socialising with others. Upon finding out that she had gone out, he beat and kicked her, causing serious injuries to her face and body. The victim was then confined to the house but managed to escape by contacting a friend while her husband was at work. Her friend later took her to the police station to lodge a report, and she was subsequently brought to Melaka Hospital for treatment. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif urged the court to impose a fitting sentence, taking into account the extent of the victim's injuries. Defence lawyer Kelvinder Singh Sidhu appealed for the minimum jail term and fine, citing that the accused supports five young children and works as a contractor earning RM3,000 a month. He added that this was the accused's first offence and that he is also responsible for the care of his ailing father, while the victim no longer resides with him following the incident.
