Melaka JPJ issues 153 summonses for seatbelt violations

MELAKA: The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 153 summonses to express and tour bus drivers as well as passengers for failing to wear seatbelts between July 1 and yesterday. Its director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said 135 summonses were issued to passengers, and 18 to drivers. 'The violations were detected through undercover officers and regular enforcement operations. The seatbelt rule has been mandatory for express and tourist buses since July 1,' she said after a special joint operation by Melaka JPJ and other agencies at Batu Berendam here last night. She added that to raise awareness, JPJ has held engagement sessions with express and tour bus operators and provided promotional materials for display in buses. Earlier, during the operation, a 33-year-old motorcyclist was fined for not having a licence and riding a Honda Wave motorcycle that was found to be unsafe. The integrated operation, involving over 70 enforcement officers, checked 745 vehicles and issued penalties for 197 offences. - Bernama

Special compound rate payment offer extended until Dec 31, says JPJ

MELAKA: The Special Compound Rate Payment Offer (flat rate) of RM150, which ended Monday (June 30), has been extended until Dec 31, says the Road Transport Department (JPJ). JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the extended offer applies to three categories of summonses - summonses issued under the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) from October 2018 onwards, Notice 114 (notice to attend an inquiry), and Notice 115 (request for driver's details) issued in 2023 or earlier. "As of yesterday, only 442,870 summonses have been settled under the Special Compound Rate Payment Offer (flat rate) introduced since Jan 2. "According to our records, there are still 2.03 million unsettled summonses, with AWAS summonses being the highest at 1.54 million," he said. He was speaking to reporters after a Special Operation on the Use of Seat Belts on Express and Tour Buses, held at the Melaka Sentral Bus Terminal here Tuesday (July 1), which was also attended by Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop. Aedy Fadly said there are 311,866 outstanding summonses under Notice 114, and 171,321 under Notice 115. He added that failure to settle any compoundable summonses - whether overdue or beyond the compound period - will result in the vehicle being automatically blacklisted by JPJ's system starting Tuesday. "For example, beginning today, if an AWAS notice is not settled within 60 days of issuance, JPJ will blacklist the vehicle or the driver concerned. "Except for around 100 companies with outstanding summonses, as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke last week, we are giving them a 14-day grace period until July 8… after that date, blacklisting will be enforced," he said. He therefore urged all members of the public with outstanding compoundable summonses for the three categories - previously set at RM300 - to settle them promptly before Dec 31. The public can check and pay their summonses via the MyJPJ app, the MySIKAP Public Portal, JPJ kiosks, JPJ Mobile counters and JPJ service counters. - Bernama

Illegal to ride e-scooters on public roads, says JPJ

Melaka JPJ said they were aware of a video showing three people on electric scooters at a traffic light junction near Bachang. (Facebook pic) MELAKA : The road transport department (JPJ) has warned of stern action against users of electric scooters who ride on public roads. The warning came after a video clip was widely shared yesterday showing three people riding electric scooters at a traffic light junction near Bachang on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin highway. 'We would like to stress that this behaviour is illegal and poses a danger not only to those involved but also to other road users,' said Melaka JPJ deputy director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim. Those who operate unauthorised vehicles on a public road may be prosecuted and could be fined up to RM1,000, or jailed for up to three months, or both. He said the use of micromobility vehicles, such as e-scooters, hoverboards, monowheels, Segways, and unapproved electric bicycles on public roads is strictly prohibited under an order which came into effect in December 2021. 'Micromobility vehicles are only permitted in designated areas such as recreational parks, dedicated lanes, or private premises, not on public roads,' he said.
