‘Full of delightful surprises': why Spy is my feelgood movie

It has a plot and a cast that seem cooked up during a hallucinatory fever dream. It shouldn't work, but it does – and so splendidly, too. In Paul Feig's comedy Spy, Melissa McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a timid CIA desk agent who gets sent out into the field by her fearsome boss (Alison Janney) after the death of her slick Bond-like colleague, Bradley Fine (Jude Law, in a rare comedic turn). The cast is full of delightful surprises. Rose Bryne is a stiletto-clad Oxford-educated villainess with quips so brutal that she makes Regina George look like Barney. Peter Serafinowicz does a game turn as an – admittedly very pre-#MeToo – cringey Italian pervert figure named Aldo ('like the shoe store found in American malls'). And in the film's most magnificent twist, Jason Statham parodies the hard-as-nails action leads he's played over the years as a hard-edged buffoon with 'a habit of doing things that people say I can't do: walk through fire, water-ski blindfolded, take up piano at a late age'. That's not even to mention whatever it is that's going on between English comedian Miranda Hart, who stars as Susan's best friend and co-conspirator, and American rapper 50 Cent, who plays himself. I was first introduced to McCarthy's charms in another Feig feature, the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids, then hailed as a vital intervention in the major debate, considered legitimate and interesting at the time, about whether women were funny. Bridesmaids proved the affirmative. There were gross-out gags: who could forget Maya Rudolph's diarrhea-ridden bride-to-be, festooned in her custom designer dress, running through a busy street before giving up to let loose among the cars, the sacred commingling with the literally shitty profane. Then there were the nuances of girl-world jockeying: the self-cannibalising competition involved in organising a bachelorette party, or showing up to a fancy party in your best clothes, only to be asked by the insouciant rich girl whether you had just 'come from work'. Among this cast of funny women, McCarthy was a scene-stealer. As Megan, she first appeared as someone Hollywood would at best ignore or at worst despise: she was plus-sized, she was unglamorous, she dressed in clothes that – to borrow a joke from Spy – made her look like 'someone's homophobic aunt'. But McCarthy delivered a magnetic performance of a woman who was foul-mouthed, sexually confident and utterly self-possessed. Far from being a figure of pity, McCarthy made Megan a figure of admiration. Those comic gifts are given more space to roam in Spy. McCarthy's Susan Cooper is a meek middle-aged woman stuck in a fossilised routine, unappreciated at work and unseen in life. She watches her younger, thinner colleague get served faster at the bar, basking in the glow of the kind of male attention Susan's never had in her life. Jude Law gives her a hideous necklace with a grinning cartoon cupcake, which says: I like you, but I do not respect you. It is Susan's invisibility, and the fact that people will underestimate her at every turn, that grants her a chance to go on a mission. Just follow the target from a distance, her boss tells her. Inevitably, Susan breaks the rules. My love for spy films began in the 2000s with cartoon Totally Spies, which follows a trio of high school girls in California who spend their time shopping, partying and undertaking high-flying missions for an international organisation. I was drawn to the boundlessness of their lives, their glamorous escapades, their incredible gadgets and total competence. That quickly led me to McG's Charlie's Angels films (great fun, dodgy accents) then later the classics: the Hitchcocks, the Bonds, the Le Carré adaptations. The spy films I returned to most, though, were the comedies that embraced the high camp of the genre, understanding that these stories were as total a fantasy as those about being saved by a perfect prince. I was also drawn to the stories about women, because the appeal of the genre is, to me, indelibly tied to gender. In a world that reminds girls that danger may be lurking around every corner, and asks women to embrace a kind of harried, self-sacrificial domesticity, the female spies in these films were a perfect on-screen foil. Spy – it's in the name – is both a satire and homage. There's a high-powered gadget lab with cars that look like smooth, expensive spaceships, and a sardonic gadget master to match. There's a high-stakes poker game; a dangerous drop-off in a bumping club; a high-speed car chase through a European city. These tropes are both indulged and subverted to fun, frothy effect. And Spy is radical in other respects: it remains the only major Hollywood spy film that features a middle-aged woman as the lead. I know because every so often, in search of a feelgood film, I rewatch what can be inelegantly described as 'female-fronted spy comedies': Charlie's Angels 1 and 2, the recent reboot of Charlie's Angels, as well as the fun Mila Kunis-Kate McKinnon buddy comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me. Projects like these are few and far between; I guess Hollywood does not think there's enough of an audience for them. To that I say: join us. The delights are profound; the sense of freedom intoxicating; the costumes and the gadgets and the intrigue sexy and absurd and larger-than-life – and an exciting new adventure, that great siren song to the desk-bound, is always just around the corner. Spy is available on Hulu in the US and Disney+ and Netflix in the UK and Australia

Netflix adds Will Ferrell's most controversial movie

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Cast your mind back ten years. It's 2015, and franchises rule. Mad Max: Fury Road, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation are battling it out for box office supremacy. Sicario, Carol, and The Martian are on numerous "best films of the year" lists, but comedies are out in the cold. Yet, although it wasn't a vintage year, some of their biggest names were out in force — Melissa McCarthy, Seth MacFarlane and, perhaps busiest of all, Will Ferrell. One of his releases from that year — and his most controversial film ever – has just arrived on Netflix today [Monday, June 9]. It's Get Hard. He plays an obscenely rich hedge-fund manager who finds himself convicted of fraud and sentenced to a stretch in San Quentin. With just one month to get his affairs in order and, knowing that his chances of surviving longer than a few minutes behind bars are slim to nothing, he turns to a stranger he believes is an ex-con and can teach him the art of survival. Played by Kevin Hart, he's actually a car wash manager who has never even received a parking ticket and has his work cut out in devising a training regime to keep predatory prisoners at bay. As the tests become increasingly gruelling (to say the least), the two learn they've been wrong about many things and that their assumptions about each other are at the top of the list. With its racial, sexist and homophobic jokes, the film was labelled politically incorrect to the extent that its director, Etan Cohen, and its stars had to speak out in its defence. Audiences gave it a mixed response, both laughing and cringing at what was, at times, surprisingly strong stuff, and the film is probably Ferrell's raunchiest work to date — even closer to the mark than the much-loved Step Brothers (2008). Best movies on Netflix But there's another side to it. While it might look crude on the surface, there's an element of satire just beneath which is aimed directly at the assumptions that feed so many social attitudes. There's no doubt that it's offensive, but in a way that echoes a boundary pushing comedy from the mid-70s — Blazing Saddles (1974). The older film is a classic, Get Hard less so, but it still has plenty of laughs and much of that is down to the Ferrell/Hart pairing, which is where it really scored on its release and still does now. Both actors are naturals when it comes to working as part of a double act. Here, they play on their best-known characteristics — Hart's fast-talking street smarts and Ferrell's naïvete and fumbling attempts to appear more confident — to create the humor and ultimately show their characters' individual strengths. In more recent years, Hart's partnerships with Dwayne Johnson in Central Intelligence and the Jumanji franchise have proved particularly successful. For Ferrell, however, a co-star is essential to his collaborative way of working, both in front and behind the camera. As an actor, he thrives on sharing the limelight either as part of a double act or in a small ensemble, most notably in the Anchorman movies. While he doesn't have a regular on-screen comedy partner, there are a handful he returns to, John C Reilly especially, and there's a good reason. In Step Brothers, their second film together, their juvenile 40-somethings forced into being siblings were uniquely special, and it was all down to their personal chemistry. Sadly, even their combined magic couldn't make Holmes And Watson (2018) live up to everybody's expectations. His roster of female co-stars is equally impressive — Tina Fey, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Poehler, Christina Applegate — and last year saw him carry this collaborative style to a documentary, the much-praised Will And Harper. Ferrell also produced this moving portrait of his friendship with writer Harper Steele, his first documentary behind the camera and easily his most personal project to date. Before then, he'd worked with director/writer Adam McKay on upwards of 30 titles, often acting in them as well, and since they ended their working partnership in 2019, Ferrell has continued producing, with Apple TV Plus's Dickens-inspired Spirited (2022) proving to be a festive favourite and Netflix's Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) now about to return, but as a stage musical. He and Steele wrote the original movie and are set to repeat their double act for this latest incarnation. The film was a feel-good piece of entertainment, yet its most familiar song probably wouldn't have been out of place in Get Hard. Yes, we mean "Jaja Ding Dong"! Get Hard is on Netflix in the US and UK now. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga is on Netflix in the US and the UK.

Star who worked with Pedro Pascal and Kaia Gerber is unrecognizable with her kids at a park, who is she?

This versatile actress has a long, impressive resume that mostly includes silver-screen comedies. The 51-year-old super quirky star got her start on Saturday Night Live decades ago. Then came a massive hit movie with an ensemble cast including Melissa McCarthy. This New York native has also worked on a ghost movie and a love story but one of her biggest films was with Pedro Pascal. Now the thespian is on an AppleTV+ series with Kaia Gerber, Leslie Bibb and Carol Burnett. Over the weekend the Hollywood stalwart made a rare appearance in a Pasadena, California park with her two small children. Who is she? From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The 51-year-old super quirky star got her start on Saturday Night Live decades ago. Then came a massive hit movie with an ensemble cast including Melissa McCarthy She is Kristen Wiig. Kristen and her husband Avi Rothman have two children, twins named Shiloh and Luna. They were born in January 2020 via surrogacy after Wiig and Rothman struggled with in vitro fertilization (IVF) for three years. Wiig has spoken about the 'bittersweet' journey to motherhood and the impact her children have had on her life. This comes after news Kristen is set to star alongside Bill Murray in Epiphany. Max Barbakow, the director of Epiphany, said: 'It's a rare, delightful experience when a story takes you on a journey that all at once manages to make you laugh, make you feel, and hold a mirror up to the wonderful absurdities of everyday life. 'It's even more delightful when your spirit guides are Bill Murray and Kristen Wiig. But 'Epiphany' carries that breadth of tone, depth of wisdom, and such a lush sense of cinematic possibility, all while teeing up iconic roles for two already-iconic, totally original unicorns in Kristen and Billy.' The upcoming movie centres on Favorite Ives, an heiress who is facing destitution after spending her entire fortune. The character, played by Kristen, is therefore required to find a rich husband in just two weeks, or she risks becoming homeless. Favorite's search for a rich husband leads her towards Bill's on-screen character, billionaire Oz Bell, who is wowed by her spirit and spontaneity. Despite this, their relationship proves to be very complicated. Bill and Kristen are both serving as executive producers on the comedy project, alongside Jillian Apfelbaum and Margot Hand. Bill remains one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, and the acclaimed actor recently admitted that he actually prefers to play complicated on-screen characters, because he can often relate to their failings. During an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival, he explained: 'It's always interesting when you're playing a guy who has done some damage. I know I've done some damage.' The 'Groundhog Day' star has enjoyed huge success in his career, starring in films such as 'Lost in Translation' and the 'Ghostbusters' franchise. However, Bill also confessed to being 'lazy' at different times in his career. The movie star reflected: 'I've been lazy. I don't have an agent anymore, so I'm not the first person people think of to be in studio movies.' Despite this, Bill suggested that some of his recent film projects - including 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' and 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' - have given him a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the movie business. The veteran actor - who was a member of the 'Saturday Night Live' cast, before achieving huge success in Hollywood - explained: 'Only in this last year, doing these, has reawakened me about searching for material. 'I've lived the life of a bass … waiting for something to come down at me. If something lands in my mouth, I'll eat it.' Last year she said Wiig never thought she would be in any more Despicable Me movies. The actress voiced the role of Miss Hattie in the first installment of the animation franchise - which centres on a former supervillain turned secret agent named Gru, his adoptive daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and his yellow-colored Minions - and was delighted to be asked back to play her role in the fourth film. She told Who magazine: 'I was so happy to play Miss Hattie in the first movie, but then just kind of assumed that since the girls were adopted, I wouldn't be in any others. So, the fact that they asked me to come back and be a different character for the next three films is amazing, and working on them has been one of my favorite experiences.' The Bridesmaids star is even excited for her children to be able to see the new film because it has such a 'generational appeal' and is looking forward to sharing something with them that she has been a part of. She said: 'The kids have seen the first film and they just love Minions. So, I'm very excited to see 'Despicable Me 4' with them. It's nice to have something we can all watch together that I've been a part of. 'Given how long the franchise has been around, it has generational appeal. , I wish I had [Miss Hattie's] energy! In this film, you see her mama bear come out, and I think I'm like that with my family a little bit, too. So Lucy loves her work, but family comes first, and that's something I can relate to, for sure'

What Happened in 'Nine Perfect Strangers' Season 1? Getting You Up to Speed for Season 2

With the second and long-awaited season of Nine Perfect Strangers finally here, we're recapping season one for those of you who've forgotten what happened. Starting on May 21, the new season of the show – which follows guests at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation – which will include a whole new lineup of 'strangers,' will finally be on Hulu. More from SheKnows Nicole Kidman Poses With Red Hair in New Photos Days After Suffering a Wig Malfunction at Cannes The new season, which will see Nicole Kidman reprising her role as the bone-chilling Russian healer Masha, will also star Murray Bartlett, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, Dolly De Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, King Princess, Aras Aydin, Lucas Englander, Henry Golding, Mark Strong, and Lena Olin. But before we tune into season two, let's refresh our minds a bit. What happened in season one that could carry on in season two? What happened to Masha? Find all those answers below: Season one follows nine strangers who attend an expensive wellness retreat at the Tranquillum House, hosted by Masha. The group consists of novelist Frances (Melissa McCarthy), divorcee Tony (Bobby Cannavale), health-retreat addict Lars (Luke Evans), rich young couple Ben (Melvin Gregg) and Jessica (Samara Weaving), single mom Carme; (Regina Hall) and the Marconi family, Napoleon (Michael Shannon), his wife Heather (Asher Keddie) and their daughter Zoe (Grace Van Patten). The group is all battling their own inner demons. For example, Ben and Jessica's lottery win changed their relationship, the Marconis are struggling to heal after the suicide of their son Ben, and Carmel is trying to lose weight after a messy divorce. Masha and wellness consultants Yao and Deliah surveil the group closely, involuntarily giving them microdoses of LSD. Masha eventually admits to drugging the guests, but it's too late as they all embark on a trip that will cause them to face their inner demons. After the trip goes awry, Masha ends up locking them all in a room and flees, but before the police show up, the guests work through their trauma and decide to cover for Masha. More details below! One of the most surprising plot lines in season one developed between Masha and Carmel. As it turns out, Carmel decided to go to the retreat because Masha had slept with her husband. But in addition to wanting some revenge via her alarming threats, Carmel also wanted to learn from her to potentially get her husband back. And, as was revealed in their heart-to-heart in her room when Carmel changed contacts, she was actually the one who shot Masha years ago. Luckily, Masha didn't hold a grudge. Instead, she forgave Carmel because the incident is the reason Tranquillum House exists in the first place. Plus, Carmel admitted she never intended to shoot Masha that day, and her attitude was what made her pull the trigger. They leave the conversations with everything resolved; Carmel is no longer a threat, and Masha finally knows the truth. While Masha's goal in the retreat is to heal her guests, viewers also learn that she wants to unlock a way to see her daughter, Tatiana, who passed away years earlier in an accident. By the end of the season, Masha gets there with the help of Zoe Marconi. While grieving the loss of her twin brother Zach (Hal Cumpton), Zoe is joined by her parents, Napoleon and Heather, in trying to connect with Zach and work through his sudden passing. In their biggest hallucination in the season, Zoe takes Masha to her daughter, and they reunite. After an entire season investigating Masha's unorthodox methods, Lars does write an exposé. In addition to welcoming a baby with his partner, Lars also published a cover story for The New Yorker titled 'Psychedelics to the Rescue.' While Delilah (Tiffany Boone) was determined to call the cops and expose Masha's practices at the end of the season, it seems her methods didn't exactly work, and Tanquillum House is alive and well. When the police arrive, none of her guests incriminate Masha, and she leaves scot-free. By the end of the season, viewers see that Ben and Jessica are now leading Tranquillum and welcoming a new set of strangers into the retreat. Not only does Masha escape any problems with the police, but she's on cloud nine after reuniting with her daughter. In the final scene of the season, she's seen driving with her daughter in Ben's yellow Lamborghini. Much like season one, season two of the show will follow a group of nine strangers at a retreat, this time taking place in the snowy Austrian Alps. 'Nine people chosen under bizarre circumstances for a healing retreat?' Mark Strong's character says in the trailer. 'Feels like a setup.' 'I've invited you all here because sometimes you shouldn't deal with pain gently,' Masha says in another moment. With all the season one characters either moving on with their lives or doing their best to stay away from Masha, we're guessing Kidman will be the only returning star.
