Qantas confirms up to 6 million customers hit in major cyber attack

Don't miss out on the headlines from Breaking News. Followed categories will be added to My News. Up to six million Qantas customers have been involved in a major cyber attack, with the airline warning that the amount of stolen data is expected to be 'significant'. While the data compromised did not include passport details and financial information, hackers were able to gain access to names, email addresses, frequent flyer numbers and date-of-birth details. The national carrier was alerted to suspicious activity on Monday after it detected 'unusual activity' on a third party platform used by Qantas airline contact centres. A statement released by the airline said staff took 'immediate steps' to contain the system breach and stressed there was no impact to the airline's operations or safety. 'We are continuing to investigate the proportion of the data that has been stolen, though we expect it will be significant,' it said. 'Importantly, credit card details, personal financial information and passport details are not held in this system. 'No frequent flyer accounts were compromised nor have passwords, PIN numbers or log in details been accessed.' Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson apologised to customers and said the company was 'working closely' with the national cyber security co-ordinator, the Australian Cyber Security Centre and independent specialised cyber security experts. The Australian Federal Police has also been notified. 'We sincerely apologise to our customers and we recognise the uncertainty this will cause. Our customers trust us with their personal information and we take that responsibility seriously,' she said. 'We are contacting our customers today and our focus is on providing them with the necessary support.' The major Qantas cyber attack comes after similar large-scale international hacks targeting Hawaiian Airlines. A government spokesman said any customers with concerns should contact Qantas directly and the cyber security co-ordinator was 'working closely' with the airline to provide assistance and advice. 'Qantas says no financial data has been accessed and is in the process of contacting customers,' he said. 'The best way for Australians to protect themselves online is to follow three basic rules – keep your software up to date, use strong pass phrases and set up multi-factor authentication.' The Coalition's cyber security spokeswoman Melissa Price said the major cyber incident was 'concerning'. 'With up to six million customers potentially impacted, this is a nationally significant cyber incident and Qantas needs to maintain open and honest communications,' she said. 'Australians travelling today should be reassured by statements that the safety of Qantas' operations remains unaffected. 'This is a stark reminder for all Australian businesses to take every available step to protect the data of Australians.' Melissa Price blasts NDIS reforms as blow to remote providers

Member for Durack Melissa Price has slammed upcoming changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, warning the reforms will hurt regional WA's practitioners and their clients. The changes to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits, due to come into effect from today, are part of the Albanese Government's push to rein in the scheme's rising costs. The plan aims to reduce annual spending growth from 15 per cent to 8 per cent by aligning therapy prices with national benchmarks. While Ms Price agrees the NDIS needs reform, she says uniform pricing ignores the higher costs of delivering services across remote areas like Durack. 'The NDIS has blown out beyond its original intent and clearly needs serious reform,' Ms Price said. 'However, that reform must be fair, informed and grounded in real world experience. Ripping funding out of the regions should not be the first step.' Ms Price said she had been contacted by allied health professionals across Durack, particularly in the Pilbara, and the Kimberley, who fear the removal of regional loadings and reduced travel support will force them to cut services or shut up shop altogether. 'These are small, often women-led, businesses — speech pathologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists etc. — who have chosen to work in remote communities,' she said. 'These changes put their livelihoods, and their clients' care, at serious risk.' The Coalition has also raised concerns about the sudden nature of the announcement, which it says came with no warning and leaves little time for providers or participants to adjust. 'It is not feasible for providers and participants to adapt service delivery at such short notice,' Ms Price said. 'This is yet another example of the Albanese Government's failure to consult the sector or understand the reality on the ground.' In response, Ms Price said she and the Coalition have written to the Minister for Disability and the NDIS, Mark Butler, calling for a three-month deferral of the changes to allow proper planning and consultation. 'The Government must explain how regional providers are expected to adapt without harming participants,' she said. 'The Coalition will continue to monitor the impact and hold the Government to account for any negative outcomes for NDIS participants.' The Kimberley Echo has contacted Minister for the NDIS Jenny McAllister for comment.

Durack MP Melissa Price given science, cyber security in new Coalition shadow cabinet

Fifth-term Durack Liberal MP Melissa Price has been handed science and cyber security in the Coalition's new-look shadow cabinet. After the Liberal and Nationals parties reconciled after their Coalition 'divorce', Liberal leader Sussan Ley on Wednesday announced the make-up of the new team. Ms Price said she was honoured by her appointed shadow ministries and as a former science and technology minister had a wealth of knowledge and experience and proven track record in these areas. 'The opportunity to once again help guide Australia's scientific and technological future is an incredible honour,' she said. 'Serving in this portfolio was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. From announcing our partnership with NASA to sending an Australian rover to the Moon, I saw firsthand the opportunity, innovation and national pride that science brings.' The vast electorate Ms Price represents — the biggest in Australia at 4,000,000sqkm — has long been central to the nation's science story. 'Carnarvon played a vital role in the Apollo 11 mission and today, we are home to groundbreaking projects like the Square Kilometre Array in the Murchison and deep space communication facilities in New Norcia,' Ms Price said. As shadow minister for cyber security, Ms Price will also focus on one of Australia's most urgent national security challenges. 'In today's interconnected world, protecting our digital borders is as vital as defending our physical ones — cyber security is national security,' she said. 'I will continue to push for stronger cyber protections and greater investment in science because our future depends on how we face today's challenges and prepare for tomorrow.'
