Oregon makes its return to the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas

It was so fun the first time around that the Oregon Ducks men's basketball team is looking for more. Oregon is scheduled to return to Las Vegas in November to participate in the Players Era Championship, an event they won in 2024. The Ducks defeated Texas A&M (80-70), San Diego State (78-68), and Alabama (83-81) to win the first title. Oregon will open this year's event with Auburn Nov. 24 and will be televised on TruTV. There's no word whether Michael Dyer will make an appearance. Oregon will play San Diego State the next day, with the championship game and consolation matchups on Nov. 27. The first two days of the Men's Championship will be pre-set, with Wednesday's championship day matchups determined following the outcome of the first two days of competition. Teams that win their first two games – and based on the matchups, there could be as many as six teams that go 2-0 – will be the first to qualify for the Players Era Championship and Third-Place game matchups, followed by teams that go 1-1. The Men's Championship Game will take place Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena at 6:30 PM (PST). The winner of the event will receive a million dollars to be split among the players. Winning the title in Vegas with wins over two ranked teams propelled the Ducks to a nice season where they finished 25-10 on the year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. With a bunch of newcomers on this squad paired up with the likes of Jackson Shelstad and Nate Bittle, the Ducks have to hope for a similar outcome in this year's trip to Las Vegas. FIVB president Fabio Azevedo said he is expecting that the Philippines' hosting of the FIVB Men's World Championship will be a "remarkable success." Azevedo and the FIVB recently visited the Philippines to check on the preparations done by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) for the upcoming global event scheduled on September 12 to 28. 'We have no doubt that the world championships here will be a remarkable success,' Azevedo said in a press conference on Thursday. Azevedo: We have no doubt that the World Championship will be a remarkable success @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) July 3, 2025 According to Azevedo, he has seen how the Philippines has hosted multiple editions of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) and the sports organization has set the bar high coming into the Men's Championship. 'Our expectations of the Philippines are very high. We set the bar very high because it's not the first time they're hosting a big event like this,' Azevedo said. In terms of logistics, infrastructure, and accommodations, the FIVB chief said the Philippines is prepared for the said event. Hong Kong coach eyes complete performance as he tweaks squad for Rugby World Cup decider

It is hard to ignore the prize that awaits the winner of Saturday's final game of this year's Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship, but that is just what Hong Kong head coach Andrew Douglas would like his team to do. Victory for either Hong Kong or South Korea on Saturday would most likely mean a place in the 2027 World Cup, and Douglas, who has tweaked his squad again for the most important game in the city's history, wants his players to enjoy the moment. With families, friends and a healthy contingent of supporters all making the trip to Incheon, Douglas is expecting it to be a 'pretty special' week. 'It's like a final, and finals week you've got to really enjoy because they don't come around that often, and when they do, you can overthink things and get too fizzed up,' Douglas said. 'I think it's really important that players enjoy the week, enjoy working with each other and what is about to unfold. We haven't brought any emotion into it yet, or the outside implications – it's purely about what we need to do to beat Korea.' Hong Kong coach Andrew Douglas said the squad would have 'some real impact'. Photo: Jonathan Wong That focus has led Douglas to return to the front five that started the 43-10 win over the United Arab Emirates, move captain Josh Hrstich back to No 8 and switch Luke van der Smit, who scored a hat-trick of tries in the 78-7 win over Sri Lanka last weekend, to the bench.

Dowling hoping Munster can repeat interprovincial triumph

Munster Women's Team captain Mary Dowling (Mallow) is hoping her side can secure consecutive titles this week as the Men's and Women's Interprovincial Championships get underway at Knightsbrook Golf Club on Wednesday morning. Under the guidance of Dowling and team manager Sinead Enright (Macroom), the province ended a five year wait for glory in 2024, claiming just their ninth win in the event's 61-year history. Now, the side are aiming to repeat the feat last achieved by a Munster Women's team in 2002 and 2003. 'Back in the 2000s, Munster won it two years in a row so that is their whole thing now, that we have to do as good as that team, that we have to go for two in a row,' said Dowling. 'They are full of confidence and anticipation.' Five players from last year's winning side return, including current Bridgestone Women's Order of Merit leader Aideen Walsh (Lahinch), Valerie Clancy (Killarney), Mairead Martin (Kanturk), Clodagh Coughlan (Douglas) and Caitlin Shippam (Ballykisteen). Douglas pair Karen O'Neill and Aoife Ní Thuama also return to the fold, having last featured in 2023 and 2022 respectively, adding further experience to a tight-knit group. 'There's a great bond,' said Dowling. 'We have Cork, Clare and Waterford so there was a lot of slagging now between the Banner and the Déise and the Rebels. I think now of the seven, five are Cork and we have one from Limerick and one from Clare.' Having enjoyed interprovincial success as both a player and captain, Dowling understands that the finest of margins can decide the championship but knows that another victory would be especially meaningful. 'It would be amazing, it really would. Munster has won it so little over the years, it would be very special. The main thing really is that they just put up a good performance, and I know they will,' said Dowling. 'There are great golfers on all the teams, and it comes down to very small margins at the end of it, but we'd be hoping.' Another team looking to make history are the Leinster Men's side, who are chasing a fourth title in a row, an achievement that would match their great 1960s team who triumphed from 1962 to 1965. Harry McAlinden (Bray) captains the side for a fourth time and will look to a strong line up which includes West of Ireland champion Dylan Holmes (Greystones), Munster Stroke Play runner-up Eoin Murphy (Dundalk), East of Ireland runner-up Robert Abernethy (Dun Laoghaire), Paul Coughlan (Castleknock) and Keith Egan (Carton House) as they bid to defend their crown once more. The three-day event tees off at 8am Wednesday morning with a two-tee start as the Women's Championship leads the way with their foursome matches. Munster will begin their defence against Connacht while Ulster face Leinster before the Men's Championship gets underway at 8.24am, with Leinster facing Munster and Ulster taking on Connacht.

Hong Kong make 6 changes for Asia Rugby Championship clash with Sri Lanka

Hong Kong have made six changes to their side for Sunday's Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship clash against Sri Lanka, with most in the pack, as head coach Andrew Douglas looks for some 'bang'. While there are a couple of enforced switches, with prop Keelan Chapman and wing Max Denmark both carrying knocks, Douglas also has an opportunity to take a look at some players in a game at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground that Hong Kong are expected to win. With that in mind, Alessandro Nardoni, named among the replacements, could become the latest sevens player to make his 15s debut, while Faizal Solomona Penesa comes in as a like-for-like replacement for Chapman. 'Nardoni gives us coverage for midfield and wing, he's pretty versatile, and we probably lacked a bit of that versatility last weekend, so he covers a bit more for us,' Douglas said. The power of Hong Kong's scrum is likely to be a factor against Sri Lanka. Photo: HKCR In the front row, Zacceus Cinnamond and Calum Scott, who scored his side's sixth try in last weekend's 43-10 victory over the United Arab Emirates, will start alongside Sunia Fameitau after coming off the bench in Dubai. Alex Post, Rory Cinnamond and Solomona Penesa will provide cover this time around.
