Elizabeth Warren Calls for Bribery Investigation Into Paramount-Trump Settlement as Blowback Widens

Wednesday morning brought blowback to the settlement between Paramount Global and President Trump from Democratic lawmakers and regulators. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said that she is demanding an investigation into the settlement, and said that she 'will soon introduce new legislation to rein in corruption through presidential library donations.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Inside CBS News, Staffers Voice Disgust, Anger, Relief and Anxiety After Trump Settlement Paramount and Trump in "Advanced" Settlement Talks As Merger Deadline Nears "BET Is Not Immune" From Paramount Job Cuts, CEO Scott Mills Says in Unveiling "Streamlining" 'With Paramount folding to Donald Trump at the same time the company needs his administration's approval for its billion-dollar merger, this could be bribery in plain sight,' Warren said in a statement. 'Paramount has refused to provide answers to a congressional inquiry, so I'm calling for a full investigation into whether or not any anti-bribery laws were broken.' In addition, Democratic FCC commissioner Anna Gomez released a statement requesting that the broadcast regulator, chaired by Brendan Carr, bring the pending Paramount-Skydance transaction to a full-commission vote. 'This moment marks a dangerous precedent for the First Amendment, and it should alarm anyone who values a free and independent press,' Gomez said. 'Approving this transaction behind closed doors would be a shameful outcome that denies the American people the transparency and accountability they deserve, especially when press freedom is at stake.' The settlement between Paramount and Trump will see the media giant pay $16 million ($15 million to a future presidential library and $1 million in legal fees), but it will not include an apology. That said, the settlement does require that 60 Minutes release any future transcripts with presidential candidates. Paramount had said previously that 'this lawsuit is completely separate from, and unrelated to, the Skydance transaction and the FCC approval process. We will abide by the legal process to defend our case.' Still, the pending license transfer at the FCC has raised alarm bells, with Democratic members of Congress and outside groups suggesting that if the FCC approves the deal after a settlement, Paramount executives could be exposed to anti-bribery laws. The Paramount settlement is similar in scale to a settlement from Disney over an ABC News broadcast. Inside CBS News, staffers expressed anxiety and relief at the settlement, angry at the precedent it sets, but relieved that they can move on without it hanging over their work. Liverpool owners' statement about new signing before transfer swap fell apart

Fulham's Clint Dempsey and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson were set to switch places in the 2012 summer transfer window, with FSG even going as far as accidentally saying that a deal was done Fenway Sports Group (FSG) accidentally told Liverpool fans that they had signed Clint Dempsey in 2012, only for the star to end up signing for Tottenham instead. The Reds had just finished eighth in the Premier League standings under Kenny Dalglish, secured a runners-up medal in the FA Cup and clinched the League Cup when the summer transfer window presented an incredible opportunity to build ahead of the new term. Brendan Rodgers was appointed as the successor to Dalglish at the turn of June, and wasted no time whatsoever in assessing his options for 2012/13, looking to trim the squad and bring in well-established names to ensure Liverpool fared better in the new campaign. ‌ One star that caught Rodgers' attention in particular was Dempsey - a versatile forward and attacking midfielder who had managed 60 goals and 20 assists with Fulham between 2007 and 2012. Unsettled at Craven Cottage, Dempsey had submitted a transfer request, and Rodgers thought that he would be a perfect fit for his Liverpool side going forward. ‌ As a result, FSG worked to get a deal for Dempsey over the line, with Rodgers even proposing a straight swap between the American and Liverpool club captain, Jordan Henderson. The problem with that, however, was that Henderson refused to entertain a move to West London. Things took a turn for the worse when FSG released a statement suggesting that Dempsey had been signed by the Reds. Henderson remained at Anfield, and Dempsey ended up signing for Spurs. Shedding light on the kerfuffle in conversation with Men in Blazers, Dempsey has now revealed that a move was closer than some may like to admit. He explained: "I was pretty close if I'm being honest with you. It was a situation where it was gonna be a trade for me and Jordan Henderson, and whether or not he wanted to come to Fulham or not. "It wasn't gonna be a situation where they were looking to spend a lot of money. I think they were kind of playing a little bit of Moneyball. "I think they'd already spent a lot of money on Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll, so they were looking to try to figure out a way for someone who was a little bit older — maybe it made sense to be more of a trade." ‌ The now 42-year-old added: "I think I would've fit their style – or more so, Brendan Rodgers' style because I was an inverted winger, right? I played on the left, I'd come in on my right foot, kind of like what I did at Fulham. "But Jordan Henderson didn't want to make that change, and it ended up being the best move for him. He ultimately won a Champions League and a Premier League. But it was pretty close to happening, it just wasn't meant to be." Elsewhere, Henderson has also given his side of the story, admitting that he was sent to "a very dark place" after seeing his future at Liverpool thrown into question. Speaking to The Guardian, the 35-year-old said: "That was a difficult moment I remember very clearly. ‌ "We were preparing for a (Europa League qualifying) game against Hearts at Anfield. We met as normal in the hotel and I got a knock on my door saying the manager wanted to speak to us. To be fair to Brendan Rodgers, it was really just a conversation. "It was an opportunity (to leave for Fulham) I didn't want and I didn't like. I still felt I had an awful lot to give. But I was in a very dark place at that time. It made us a lot stronger and a lot wiser later on and, without that, you never know what could have happened. ‌ "So I really cherish them moments because you need setbacks, you need adversity. You get back up, and it makes you stronger because you want to prove people wrong. Ever since that day I had something in me. "I needed to prove to the manager I would get in his team eventually. I'd do absolutely everything to be in his team, this football club, and I'd prove them wrong. In the end, I did." Henderson remained at Anfield until 2023, winning a Premier League and Champions League title before his big-money move to Al-Ettifaq. However, the Sunderland-born star lasted just a single season in Saudi Arabia before he was on the move once more - this time to Ajax. Dempsey, meanwhile, moved on to Spurs in a £6m move - but his tenure at White Hart Lane also didn't last long. The very next year, Dempsey signed with Seattle Sounders on a four-year contract, where he saw out the remainder of his career, retiring in 2018. Porto chief drops transfer bombshell in latest FIFA Club World Cup humiliation

The Club World Cup is underway but low crowds are humiliating FIFA, with the tournament now also being blamed for Porto's failure to sign players in this summer's transfer window Porto president Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that prospective targets have turned down moves to the Portuguese giants this summer due to their participation in the Club World Cup. Villas-Boas was previously manager of Chelsea and Tottenham before becoming Porto president in 2024. In that role he oversees all operations at the club, who finished third in the Primeira Liga last season. ‌ They still managed to qualify for this summer's Club World Cup, which kicked off on 14 June and is being held across the United States. Porto were drawn in Group A, alongside Al Ahly, Inter Miami and Palmeiras. ‌ Their first game was against the Brazilian side at the MetLife Stadium, ending in a goalless draw. The Portuguese side made two signings ahead of the tournament, bringing in Gabriela Veiga from Al-Ahli and Nehuén Pérez from Udinese. But Villas-Boas has now revealed that his side were left frustrated by the amount of business they were able to do. And he pointed the finger at a lack of appetite for the Club World Cup as the prime reason players were reluctant to join. "We tested the market recently, during the special transfer window from June 1 to 10 for clubs participating in the Club World Cup. It was incredible to see that many footballers did not want to participate in the competition," Villas-Boas told the Men in Blazers podcast. He added that players "prefer to rest in order to get off to a good start for the new season". He insisted that is "A good thing," with the world players' union (FIFPRO) "calling for more rest for players." "There are some European clubs that had to give their players a vacation, then bring them back very early without giving them time to recover. For us, it's as if we're continuing from last season," Villas-Boas went on to say. ‌ "And whatever happens after this tournament, the new season arrives, so they've never had the reset they need (before) a new season. A few clubs that are competing probably have a competitive advantage. Especially the Brazilian and Argentinian clubs, because they're in the middle of the season." It is the latest humiliation to hit FIFA during their much-heralded Club World Cup revamp. They have turned the tournament into a quadrenniel event, with 32 teams from across the world featuring. But the event has seen some shockingly low attendances, with the stadium for Chelsea's win over Los Angeles FC less than a third full. Only 11,974 turned up for River Plate's win over Urawa Red Diamonds in a stadium that has a capacity of 68,740. The real low point came on Tuesday night though when only 3,412 people turned up to watch South Korean side Ulsan HD lose to South African team Mamelodi Sundowns.

To Stoke Soccer Fans, Men in Blazers Will Host Shows at World Cup Sites

When Roger Bennett moved to Chicago in 1994, none of the local television channels were showcasing an important match involving his favorite soccer team. Bennett was forced to call his father back in Liverpool, England, who held his phone against the radio so that Bennett could follow along. Three decades later, soccer fans in America have a much easier time following their beloved players and teams. But Bennett, who founded the Men in Blazers Media Network, is still looking for ways to amplify the game's domestic fervor, as the United States prepares to host next year's men's World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada. Men in Blazers is announcing on Wednesday that it will host live pregame shows during the tournament in eight of the 11 U.S. metropolitan areas that are hosting World Cup matches. The shows, known as 'Match Day Live,' will be distributed across the company's social media and digital channels. The nationwide tour is an attempt to mimic ESPN's 'College GameDay,' which has built a rabid audience by visiting a college campus that is hosting a marquee football game every Saturday morning during the fall. 'In any other nation, a World Cup coming, from years out, the ecstasy would be building,' Bennett said. 'What 2026 is going to cement is this final moment where America falls in love with football like the rest of the world, and we will be front row privy to that incredible cultural moment of transformation.' Each show will be taped at a recognizable landmark, said Bennett, adding that he hoped to highlight the history and cultural and culinary life of each city. In Atlanta, the show will broadcast from Centennial Park, a prominent space during the 1996 Summer Olympics. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
