Mercedes-Benz gives its smallest cars racy Edition R and Edition R+ specials
Mercedes-Benz has been rolling out sporty Edition Rs across its lineup, and now its smallest passenger cars have received the special-edition treatment. Not only that, but there are even hotter Edition R+ variants. All are available to order now. The special edition lineup is comprised of Edition R versions of the Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan and hatch and the CLA35 four-door 'coupe', and Edition R+ versions of the Mercedes-AMG A45 S hot hatch andCLA45 Ssports sedan. Over the standard A35 and CLA35, the Edition R adds: Power continues to come from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque, mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. The Edition R+ takes the A45 S and CLA45 S and adds AMG Performance Seats. The CLA45S Edition R+ also gains a fixed rear wing, a first for the flagship CLA. Edition R+ models, like the vehicles they're based on, use a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 310kW of power and 500Nm of torque. It's mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. Despite the additional equipment, the Edition R and Edition R+ specials are no more expensive than the vehicles they're based on – and in most cases they're cheaper. Comparing list prices, the Edition R versions of the A35 are $3500 cheaper, while the special CLA is $4300 cheaper. The Edition R+ versions of the A45 and CLA45 are priced identically to the vehicles they're based on. Mercedes-Benz has previously offered Edition R versions of the AMG C43 and GLC43. While these special editions feature more aggressive styling than the vehicles they're based on, they're not the flashiest special editions to grace Mercedes' local showrooms. Late last year, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S Limited Edition was revealed for our market, featuring decals, extensive yellow accents and bright green paint, among other changes. The CLA is at the end of its lifecycle, with a new generation due in Australian showrooms next year – though hot AMG versions have yet to be revealed. The A-Class won't be replaced, but a report out of Europe has confirmed the end of production for the current model has been postponed from 2026 to 2028. Richard Hammond's Daughter Dents Her First Performance Car Immediately
Read the full story on Backfire News When you're the daughter of a famous automotive show host, you can't just buy any old ride. That's why Izzy, Richard Hammond's child, opted for a new Mercedes-AMG A35. Before you snort about how the little hatchback must be the perfect choice for a kid, just know this thing is notorious for kicking like a right, the A35 might have a little four-banger engine, but thanks to turbocharging and AMG wizardry, it pulses with a mighty 302-horsepower plus 295 lb.-ft. of torque on tap. That's plenty to get it moving at a neck-snapping pace. In other words, we can't really blame Izzy. After all, who in their right mind allows their child to buy such a beast? She showed off her newly acquired ride for a DriveTribe video, explaining why she chose it over a BMW M2. While you might not agree with her reasoning, she did some real thinking and tried out both cars before settling on the Mercedes. While taking the A35 through some tight turns on a rural UK road, she hugged the shoulder a little too tightly as a fender-mounted camera hit a clump of grass, pushing it to a weird angle. She laughs it off and so does the guy riding shotgun. However, when they arrive back to where the film crew is staged and they remove the GoPro's suction mount, they discover a small dent in the sheet metal. So in perhaps the weirdest, most unexpected way she already damaged her new ride. Of course, Richard Hammond was famous on Top Gear for wrecking cars. He even had a brush with death while testing out the Rimac Concept One all-electric hypercar, the $1 million EV going up in flames afterward. Before the incident, Izzy disclosed not only does she want to wrap the A35, she wants to dial up performance so the little 2.0-liter engine is making 500-hp. That's insane, but she is after all a chip off the old block. Images via DriveTribe/YouTube
