Mercedes-Benz quarterly sales dip

Mercedes-Benz Group has reported a 9% decrease in sales for the second quarter (Q2), selling 547,100 cars and vans, despite - what it said is strong customer demand and electric vehicle (EV) growth. The company said underlying customer demand for Mercedes-Benz Cars remained robust, particularly in the US and Germany, with (retail) deliveries rising by 26% and 7% respectively. The company said it managed deliveries to dealerships to navigate new global tariff policies, which notably affected its overall sales in the US (-12%) and China (-19%). Mercedes-Benz Cars experienced a 9% decline in sales during Q2, with 453,700 cars sold. Mercedes said 'Top-End' accounted for 14.3% of overall sales, with deliveries to customers up by 5%, reaching 69,000 units, fuelled by a 19% increase in Mercedes-AMG vehicles and a 56% rise in G-Class sales. The GLC model maintained its position as the top-selling car globally in the first half of 2025, with sales rising by 9% in Q2. The new CLE model saw a 30% increase in Q2 sales and a 66% rise in the first half of the year. Plug-in-hybrid sales globally increased by 34% in Q2, with electrified vehicles (xEVs) accounting for 40% of sales in Europe and 21% globally during the quarter. Mercedes-Benz is embarking on a multi-year product and technology launch campaign starting in 2025, with the introduction of the all-new CLA in Europe and further model releases planned throughout the year. The all-new electric GLC is set to be unveiled in September, bolstering the company's electric vehicle portfolio in the mid-size segment. Customer deliveries increased by 18% this quarter, with German retail sales up by 27% due to 'strong' demand. Mercedes-Benz Vans sold 93,400 units in Q2, with a 32% year-on-year rise in eVans sales, contributing to 7% of overall sales and 10% of European sales. Mercedes-Benz Vans also secured the largest single order of eVans to date, with 5,000 electric vans to be delivered to Amazon's transportation network. Commercial segment sales represented 82% of total sales in the first half of the year, highlighting the importance of commercial vans. Private vans accounted for 18% of sales. Mercedes Benz Group board of management member Mathias Geisen said: 'Overall, we see good customer demand in the U.S. and Germany for our products including our Top-End vehicles, despite tariffs impacting our global sales in the second quarter. 'In China, in a highly competitive environment, we could keep the number one position in the Top-End luxury segment in the first half of the year. The all-new CLA received very positive feedback.' Last month, Mercedes-Benz initiated a new phase in automotive manufacturing with the start of the new CLA model's production at the Rastatt plant in Germany. Mercedes Teases Upscale VLE Van For America

Minivans don't have a great reputation in the United States, but this has everything to do with their lack of cool factor and very little to do with their actual suitability as family vehicles. In regions like China, minivans have a much better image, with many luxurious minivans used by wealthier people to get around comfortably. For the small percentage of Americans who want a more polished minivan, Mercedes has just teased the new VLE electric van undergoing long-distance testing in Europe. It also mentioned a new VLS, and both will be marketed as "privately positioned MPVs" or "Grand Limousines". While only the VLE was teased, Mercedes-Benz made it clear that the two upcoming vans will occupy different segments. The VLE is expected to be a practical people-mover with seating for up to eight people, so is expected to be a more premium alternative to minivans like the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica. Less was said about the VLS, but the 'S' in the name hints at a spacious model that will have much more luxurious accommodations; think of it as the S-Class of vans. "The VLS will define a unique segment of its own that bestows true greatness to automotive luxury," said Mercedes. "For the first time, Mercedes-Benz will offer all-electric midsize luxury vehicles in the U.S., Canada, and China (Grand Limousines)." Both models will ride on the new scalable Van Architecture - also known as previewed last year - coming in 2026, which accommodates both luxury-focused Grand Limousines and more commercial-type vans. Considering the renewed interest in minivans in America, it looks like there is justification for the VLE and VLS to be sold here. Related: It's The Year 2000 Again As Minivans Soar In Popularity Two VLE test vehicles were tested over a distance of 683 miles, from Stuttgart to Rome. They only required two 15-minute charging stops to complete the journey. A mix of long highway stretches, packed rural roads, and cramped city streets tested the comfort and agility of the electric van, which is equipped with rear-axle steering to improve maneuverability. "Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route," said Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development at Mercedes-Benz Vans. "With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart to the Alps to Rome - the Mercedes-Benz VLE demonstrates the impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture." Related: Every minivan you can buy in America in 2025 The VLE was almost completely covered in a camo wrap, but the narrow greenhouse and high beltline give it a less utilitarian profile than the V-Class. Cut-outs in the rear body show that this model has practical sliding doors, so getting in and out in tight spots should be easier. Pricing will be key, but it's possible that the new VLE will be cross-shopped with the Volkswagen and even three-row electric SUVs such as the Kia EV9. The VLS, however, is unlikely to have any direct rivals. We expect more information to follow about these vans as we get closer to 2026. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Amazon expands electric fleet with record Mercedes-Benz order

Amazon integrated more than 1,800 fully electric eVito and eSprinter vehicles into its delivery network in 2020. Now nearly 5,000 additional electric vans from Mercedes-Benz will join the fleet in the coming months — the largest single order of electric vehicles (EVs) in the carmaker's history. Mercedes-Benz said the new vehicles will be deployed in five European countries, with a large portion based in Germany. Amazon expects the expanded fleet to deliver more than 200-million parcels annually. 'I am delighted that we are intensifying our long-standing relationship with Amazon and working together towards the fully electric future of transportation,' said Sagree Sardien, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans. 'The courier, express and parcel service industry again proves to be a key driver of electromobility. Our eVito and eSprinter are perfectly tailored to meet the demands of our commercial customers regarding efficiency and range. They demonstrate that locally CO 2 emission-free driving, impressive performance, comfort and low operating costs can be perfectly combined.' 'This deployment of 5,000 electric delivery vans underscores our work to reduce carbon emissions in our operations,' said Amazon global fleet and product director Neil Emery. 'From electric bikes to vans to trucks and infrastructure, we are well on our way to transforming our transportation network. We look forward to continuing to work with Mercedes-Benz to enable faster electrification and decarbonisation across Europe.'

Scott Mills launches UK-first podcast

Radio DJ Scott Mills has launched the UK's first podcast for van drivers. The star has partnered with Mercedes-Benz Vans to launch the Under the Bonnet podcast, a series of 30minute episodes in conversation with celebrities and guests to understand what makes Britain's van drivers tick. Scott, 52, whose dad Pete ran a removals company and drove a van, recorded the series discussed everything from his enduring love of service stations to the changing face of van drivers. The series, which has been launched to celebrate 30 years of the Sprinter, also delves into findings from the second annual Mercedes-Benz Vans Under the Bonnet report, which found conversations about potholes have overtaken football as the number one ice-breaker when talking to a stranger. The first episode of the Under the Bonnet podcast sees Scott in conversation with BBC Celebrity MasterChef judge and food critic Grace Dent, who reveals that her guilty pleasure is dining out at a motorway service station. In the second episode Scott opens up about his own mental health challenges as he talks to van driver David Curtis about the mental load of life on the road. The Mercedes-Benz Van Under the Bonnet report reveals 65% of van drivers have suffered from depression or anxiety. Scott said: 'As a child, I spent hours sitting in front of my dad's van, so recording a podcast in a Sprinter wasn't strange for me at all. Having grown up around it, I've seen first hand the invaluable role van drivers play in the UK. I'm proud to bring the Under the Bonnet podcast to the van driver community who work so hard around the clock to keep our businesses moving, our shops stocked and our deliveries made." Iain Forsyth, Managing Director at Mercedes-Benz Vans UK said: 'Scott Mills is the voice of the UK in the mornings so who better to become the voice of our Under the Bonnet podcast as we mark 30 years of the iconic Sprinter van. Since we launched the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in 1995 the world has changed and so have our van drivers. Back then drivers only had radio for company. Our Under the Bonnet research shows its podcasts they now switch on, so it made sense to create a dedicated podcast just for our drivers that talks to them about the challenges they face day-to-day. 'We're really excited to launch the Under the Bonnet podcast to shine our full beams on the reality of van life.'
