Trump admin. talks federal funding pause — What does that mean for local nonprofits?

The Trump administration is pushing to pause federal funding to review government spending, and now recipients of federal money are wondering if that applies to them. The White House press secretary said programs that offer individual assistance from the federal government like Medicaid, food stamps and student aid will not be impacted by the freeze. 'Starting to add up' – Consumers, businesses impacted by increase in egg prices But funding for foreign aid, nonprofits and school lunches for low-income students could be put on pause. 'Pause, right? That's a very key word, strategic word. What is pause? Is that one day? Is that two days? Are people being affected now? Those are some of the questions that we have at Mercy Center for Women,' said Jennie Hagerty, executive director of the Mercy Center for Women. As of now, a federal judge has temporarily blocked the funding freeze until Monday, giving the White House a little more time to answer some of those questions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
