‘Horrific': Little girl and father fall off cruise ship from fourth floor deck

A father and child were rescued from the water after going overboard a Disney Cruise Line ship on Sunday afternoon. The child sat on the rail of the Disney Dream cruise ship while the father was taking a picture on Sunday, according to passenger Gar Frantz, who said he was on the fourth floor deck at the time of the incident. Then the child fell overboard, Frantz said. 'We watched it, you could see two little things ... it was crazy, it was horrific,' Frantz said about seeing the father and child in the water. Passenger Gail Merrick said she was playing bingo aboard the cruise ship, which was travelling from Florida to the Bahamas and back, when she noticed a commotion on the deck. Merrick said she saw a yellow boat with crew members on it attempting what she was told was a rescue. 'We came to find out that it was a child and then the father had gone in after the child, so we were watching with bated breath basically waiting for what would happen,' Merrick told NBC News. Merrick said the ship turned around following the incident and the crew seemed to quickly find the father and child, prompting an announcement of the rescue. In a statement, Disney said the crew aboard the Disney Dream 'swiftly rescued two guests from the water'. 'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,' Disney said. 'We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols. Disney did not share any details about the incident or identifying information about the two people who went overboard. It is not clear where the ship was when the father and child went overboard, or how many days the cruise had been travelling. The US Coast Guard did not respond to a request for comment. James Tackett said he felt the ship make a really sharp turn and was told by someone that a little girl fell off the boat and her father jumped in to save her. 'When they did officially get the people, everyone cheered,' Tackett said. 'It was a good moment.' Brenda Tackett, James' mother, said when she heard that two people had fallen overboard, she texted her two children who were on the cruise to get in touch with her. The ship's crew handled the incident really well, she said. 'The Disney Cruise Line staff were phenomenal, the crew, everybody was on it,' Brenda Tackett said. 'You could tell they've practiced this, hopefully have never used it before but they were great. The whole thing was maybe 10, 15 minutes and they safely got back on board. According to Merrick, after the rescue, the cruise continued. 'Thankfully it turned out positive and we were able to enjoy the rest of the cruise,' Merrick said.

Investigations ‘ongoing' after gibbon dies suddenly at Assiniboine Park Zoo

(Assiniboine Park Zoo/Instagram) Staff are still searching for answers after a gibbon died suddenly at Assiniboine Park Zoo. According to the zoo, Merrick, the white-handed gibbon, died last week after a suspected illness. He was four years old. Zoo staff said they are 'truly heartbroken.' 'Merrick will be greatly missed here at the Zoo by members, volunteers, visitors, and staff,' the zoo wrote in a social media post. (Assiniboine Park Zoo/Instagram) According to the zoo, Merrick's care team recently noticed he was eating less and seemed lethargic. They suspected an infection and began treating him with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories earlier this month. The zoo said he was being closely monitored and taking his medication while staying with his gibbon family. 'Unfortunately, he continued to decline, and a few days later experienced a fall in his habitat. Despite intensive, around the clock veterinary care and treatments, he passed away,' the zoo said. Further investigation into Merrick's sudden change of health is 'ongoing,' the zoo said, which includes postmortem exams and screening for different infections and illnesses at specialized labs. (Assiniboine Park Zoo/Instagram) They hope these tests will give further insight into his condition. 'In the meantime, the animal care and veterinary teams are keeping a close eye on the rest of the gibbon family,' the post said. According to staff, Merrick was born at the zoo to mom Maya and dad Samson—their second child. He is described as brave, adventurous and 'the typical middle child,' acting as a rowdy little brother to Salju and an amazing big brother to Maavi. (Assiniboine Park Zoo/Instagram) 'Merrick was a charismatic member of the gibbon family and was deeply loved by the animal care professionals who cared for him every day,' the post said. This comes on the heels of the death of a senior polar bear at the zoo. Staff said Agee died earlier this month after the geriatric bear suffered a sudden decline from a suspected kidney infection. The zoo wrote on a social media post that while the timing of the two deaths has been unfortunate and difficult, they are completely unrelated.

New ‘poo pills' could flush out killer bugs that kill one million Brits each year

Find out how superbugs develop and spread below POO KNEW? New 'poo pills' could flush out killer bugs that kill one million Brits each year Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SUPERBUGS, or drug-resistant infections, are projected to cause more than 39 million deaths between now and 2050. This means that, on average, over three people are expected to die from antibiotic-resistant infections every minute. The "poo pills" contain stool samples from health donors, packed with good bacteria. And the idea comes from previous data that suggests superbugs can be flushed out of the bowel and replaced with a mix of healthy gut bacteria. Dr Blair Merrick, who has been testing the pills at St Guys and Thomas' hospitals, said the focus is on the bowels which are "the biggest reservoir of antibiotic resistance in humans". The bowel is considered a significant reservoir for these resistant bacteria, and from there they can cause trouble in places such as the urinary tract or bloodstream. Dr Merrick added: "So there's a lot in 'can you get rid of them from the gut?" Currently, people with recurrent illness caused by hard-to-treat bacterium Clostridium difficile can be offered faecal transplants. Scientists noticed they also had the potential to get rid of superbugs. In a new study, published in the Journal of Infection, researchers focused on 41 patients who had an infection caused by drug-resistant bacteria in the past six months. They were given pills made from faeces which people had donated to a stool bank. What is Klebsiella pneumonia? Each stool sample was tested to ensure it didn't contain and harmful bugs. Undigested food was removed, and then it was freeze dried into a powder. The powder, contained inside a pill, can then pass through the stomach unharmed and reach the intestines, where it then dissolves. Twenty of the participants were given three sets of capsules on three consecutive days, while the rest received placebo pills. For those who took the capsules , the donor bacteria was detectable in their gut flora a month later. Dr Merrick told the BBC: "It's very exciting. There's a real shift from 20 years ago, where all bacteria and viruses were assumed to do you harm; to now where we realise they are completely necessary to our overall health." To help avoid getting superbugs, the NHS recommends practising good hygiene - wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and after coughing or sneezing. Use antibiotics responsibly - avoid taking antibiotics for viral infections like colds or the flu, as they won't work. Even if you feel better, finish all of your prescribed medication to ensure the infection is fully treated. And don't share antibiotics - sharing can be harmful and can lead to resistance. Also, take preventative measures when travelling - choose food from reliable sources, and ensure food is properly cooked and handled, avoid drinking water that may be contaminated, and make sure you are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations before travelling.
