Two Colorado freshman to appear in EA Sports' College Football 26
I'm officially In The Game #CFB26 @easportscollege #EAAthlete. #Blessed In the NIL era, players relish the opportunities they receive to make a profit off their name, but there is one deal that might trump any other. That is the ability to play as yourself in a video game, or more specifically, EA Sports' latest installment, College Football 2026. On Friday, incoming Colorado freshmen London Merritt and Mantrez Walker announced they'll be in the soon-to-be-released game. The edge rusher and linebacker confirmed that their name, image and likeness will be included in the game, marking another milestone in their young careers. EA Sports brought back the popular college football franchise last year to widespread excitement from fans and players alike, eager to jump back into the game. New to this year's addition, all 136 Football Bowl Subdivision schools will be paid by EA Sports based on the frequency with which gamers play with their respective team. Real-life coaches are also being added to the game this year. Merritt and Walker are both Georgia natives, with Merritt being a blue-chip prospect once committed to Ohio State. Merritt appears to have significant potential with the Buffs, who lost several key pieces to their defensive line, most notably star defensive end BJ Green. Walker was a three-star prospect who has been with the Buffs for most of the offseason, but he projects as a likely depth piece entering his freshman season. B.C. Wildfire Service firefighter injured by falling tree at chainsaw training site
Firefighters are seen during Coastal First Nations Wildland Firefighter Boot Camp in spring 2024. (B.C. Wildfire Service) A firefighter with the B.C. Wildfire Service was injured by a tree strike in Merritt, B.C., earlier this month, according to officials. WorkSafeBC included the incident in a roundup of recent workplace injuries and close calls published on its website Monday. The agency described the incident as causing 'multiple injuries' to one worker. 'A group of workers were conducting basic chainsaw training at a field site when a suspected dangerous tree (65 cm in diameter, 27 m tall), previously assessed as a safe tree for the work activity, unexpectedly fell,' WorkSafe's summary of the incident reads. 'The tree struck a young worker about 30 feet from the tree's base.' The BCWS confirmed the incident to CTV News on Tuesday, saying in a statement that it had occurred on June 10. 'First aid attendants supported the patient until they were transferred to a higher level of care,' the wildfire service said. 'Once assessed, the patient was discharged home.' The BCWS said the tree had been deemed safe 'in accordance with danger tree assessment standards' before the incident. 'As with any injury or accident, an investigation was conducted by the B.C. Wildfire Service and WorkSafeBC,' the service said. Last summer, the BCWS came under fire from WorkSafeBC for multiple violations and missteps that preceded the 2023 death of 19-year-old wildland firefighter Devyn Gale. Gale died while she was cutting a downed tree into logs on a rugged hillside northwest of Revelstoke. Firefighters working alongside her had expressed grave concern about the burning cedar tree that fell on her before it toppled. With files from CTV News Vancouver's Todd Coyne

Merritt, B.C., hotel fire deemed suspicious by RCMP
Police in B.C.'s Interior say no one was hurt in a suspicious fire that broke out early Friday morning at the Comfort Inn & Suites hotel in Merritt, about 70 kilometres southwest of Kamloops. "A significant section of the building was engulfed, resulting in extensive damage. Fire investigators and Merritt RCMP officers remain on scene today gathering evidence and determining the cause of the blaze," Cpl. James Grandy said in a media release. Leo Charlie and his family were staying at the hotel when the fire broke out just before 2 a.m. PT. "Everyone was sleeping," he said. "All of a sudden the fire alarms started going off. It was dark and then I started hearing people running down the hallway yelling that there's a fire. It was kinda scary." Charlie, his wife and two children, aged five and seven, made their way down a fire escape to safety. He estimates he saw about 100 people in the parking lot who had evacuated the hotel. "It was pretty intense not knowing what was going on and having your kids and family, and at that time of night," he said. "The flames and smoke was coming out of the left side of the building." Like Charlie, a number of people staying at the hotel were in town for their graduation ceremony from the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology. He said people displaced from the hotel were being sent to the Mission Community Centre where alternate accommodation was being arranged.
