Missed Messages? WhatsApp's new feature helps you catch up instantly

Image credit: Getty Images WhatsApp has announced a new feature designed to help users quickly catch up on unread conversations. The tool, called Message Summaries, leverages Meta AI to provide concise overviews of unread messages—without compromising user privacy. Whether returning from a Wi-Fi-free flight or juggling multiple chats during a busy day, users can now rely on Message Summaries to get up to speed quickly. The summaries are generated privately using Meta's Private Processing technology, which ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access message content or the summaries themselves. Read- 'No one else in the chat will know you've used the feature,' the company said in a statement. 'Your privacy is protected at all times.' Message Summaries are entirely optional and turned off by default. Users have full control over the feature, including the ability to enable it only for selected chats via the Advanced Chat Privacy settings. The feature is currently rolling out in English to users in the United States, with plans to expand to more languages and regions later this year. For those interested in how Private Processing works, Meta has published an This announcement follows Unlike traditional calls, starting a voice chat does not notify or ring other members. Instead, users can join and leave the ongoing conversation at their convenience. The voice chat remains pinned to the bottom of the group chat for easy access to call controls and participant visibility. Previously limited to large groups, the feature is now available to all group sizes. Users can start a voice chat by swiping up from the bottom of the chat window and holding for a few seconds. As with all WhatsApp communications, voice chats are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security.

Facebook is asking to use Meta AI on photos in your camera roll you haven't yet shared

Facebook is asking users for access to their phone's camera roll to automatically suggest AI-edited versions of their photos — including ones that haven't been uploaded to Facebook yet. The feature is being suggested to Facebook users when they're creating a new Story on the social networking app. Here, a screen pops up and asks if the user will opt into 'cloud processing' to allow creative suggestions. As the pop-up message explains, by clicking 'Allow,' you'll let Facebook generate new ideas from your camera roll, like collages, recaps, AI restylings, or photo themes. To work, Facebook says it will upload media from your camera roll to its cloud (meaning its servers) on an 'ongoing basis,' based on information like time, location, or themes. The message also notes that only you can see the suggestions, and the media isn't used for ad targeting. However, by tapping 'Allow,' you are agreeing to Meta's AI Terms. This allows your media and facial features to be analyzed by AI, it says. The company will additionally use the date and presence of people or objects in your photos to craft its creative ideas. The creative tool is another example of the slippery slope that comes with sharing our personal media with AI providers. Like other tech giants, Meta has grand AI ambitions. Being able to tap into the personal photos users haven't yet shared on Facebook's social network could give the company an advantage in the AI race. Unfortunately for end users, in tech companies' rush to stay ahead, it's not always clear what they're agreeing to when features like this appear. According to Meta's AI Terms around image processing, 'once shared, you agree that Meta will analyze those images, including facial features, using AI. This processing allows us to offer innovative new features, including the ability to summarize image contents, modify images, and generate new content based on the image,' the text states. The same AI terms also give Meta's AIs the right to 'retain and use' any personal information you've shared in order to personalize its AI outputs. The company notes that it can review your interactions with its AIs, including conversations, and those reviews may be conducted by humans. The terms don't define what Meta considers personal information, beyond saying it includes 'information you submit as Prompts, Feedback, or other Content.' We have to wonder whether the photos you've shared for 'cloud processing' also count here. Meta has not responded to our requests for comment or clarification. So far, there hasn't been much backlash about this feature. A handful of Facebook users have stumbled across the AI-generated photo suggestions when creating a new story and raised questions about it. For instance, one user on Reddit found that Facebook had pulled up an old photo (in this case, one that had previously been shared to the social network) and automatically turned it into an anime using Meta AI. When another user in an anti-AI Facebook group asked for help shutting this feature off, the search led to a section called camera roll sharing suggestions in the app's Settings. We also found this feature under Facebook's Settings, where it's listed in the Preferences section. On the 'Camera roll sharing suggestions' page, there are two toggles. The first lets Facebook suggest photos from your camera roll when browsing the app. The second (which should be opt-in based on the pop-up that requested permission in Stories) is where you could enable or disable the 'cloud processing,' which lets Meta make AI images using your camera roll photos. This additional access to use AI on your camera roll's photos does not appear to be new. We found posts from earlier this year where confused Facebook users were sharing screenshots of the pop-up message that appeared in their Stories section. Meta has also published complete Help Documentation about the feature for both iOS and Android users. Meta's AI terms have been enforceable as of June 23, 2024; we can't compare the current AI terms with older versions because Meta doesn't keep a record, and previously published terms haven't been properly saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Since this feature dips into your camera roll, however, it extends beyond what Meta had previously announced, in terms of training its AIs on your publicly shared data, including posts and comments on Facebook and Instagram. (EU users had until May 27, 2025 to opt out.)

'Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries,' the company said in a blog post. 'No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either. This means your privacy is protected at all times. For those interested in learning more about the technical details behind Private Processing, we invite you to read our engineering blog and technical whitepaper.' Message Summaries is rolling out in the English language to people in the United States, and Meta said it hopes to bring it to other languages and countries later this year. META POACHES OPENAI RESEARCHERS: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hired three AI researchers from Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI to help with his superintelligence efforts, the Wall Street Journal's Meghan Bobrowsky reported. The social media giant poached Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov and Xiaohua Zhai from OpenAI's Zurich office, the author says, citing people familiar with the matter. The three staff established the Zurich office late last year, the author noted. UBS RAISES META TARGET: UBS raised the firm's price target on Meta Platforms to $812 from $683 and keeps a Buy rating on the shares. Meta is benefiting from consumer and advertiser demand for AI, and there is a longer term opportunity for the company to extract incremental revenue from various AI products, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Meta is also not necessarily exposed to the danger of what may be slower-than-anticipated enterprise AI spend, as it is the primary user of its own technology, UBS says. OPENAI CONTRACT TALKS: OpenAI and Microsoft are in contract negotiations that hinge on when OpenAI's systems will reach artificial general intelligence, The Wall Street Journal's Berber Jin reported. The contract stipulates that OpenAI can limit Microsoft's access to its tech when its systems reach AGI, which Microsoft is fighting. Microsoft hopes to remove the AGI clause or secure exclusive access to OpenAI's IP even after AGI is declared, according to the report. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had a 'super nice' call with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday and discussed their future working partnership, Altman said this week in a New York Times podcast. 'Obviously in any deep partnership, there are points of tension and we certainly have those,' Altman said. 'But on the whole, it's been like really wonderfully good for both companies.' AI CO-INNOVATION LAB: Microsoft, in collaboration with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and TitletownTech announced on Wednesday the opening of an AI co-innovation lab on the UWM campus. This marks Microsoft's first AI co-innovation lab with a dedicated focus on manufacturing innovation. The lab's launch comes one year after Microsoft's landmark investment to build AI infrastructure in Wisconsin. Operating out of a temporary home on the UWM campus over the past year, the lab worked with a handful of companies from across Wisconsin to build AI solutions. 'A year ago, alongside our $3.3 billion infrastructure investment, we committed to using the power of AI to help advance the next generation of manufacturing companies, skills and jobs in Wisconsin and across the country,' said Rima Alaily, corporate vice president and general counsel, infrastructure legal affairs at Microsoft. 'Thanks to our partnership with WEDC, TitletownTech and UWM, we're delivering on this commitment. With access to cutting-edge AI technology and technical guidance to bring their ideas to life, we can't wait to see what Wisconsin companies will build.' MORGAN STANLEY RAISES MICROSOFT TARGET: Morgan Stanley raised the firm's price target on Microsoft to $530 from $482 and keeps an Overweight rating on the shares after the firm updated its capex-implied AI revenue analysis and its OpenAI model detailing the contribution to Azure. While investors continue to debate the 'Return on Investment' of rising capital expenditures, the firm sees the yields on Microsoft's investments in Generative AI 'becoming increasingly apparent,' says the analyst, who expresses increased confidence in upside to Azure forecasts. Microsoft's 'prime position for the upcoming GenAI innovation cycle matched with solid execution is driving an acceleration in the Azure business,' the analyst argues. GEMINI CLI: Alphabet's (GOOG) Google announced introduced Gemini CLI, or command line interface, an open-source AI agent that brings the power of Gemini directly into a user's terminal. 'It provides lightweight access to Gemini, giving you the most direct path from your prompt to our model,' the company said. 'While it excels at coding, we built Gemini CLI to do so much more. It's a versatile, local utility you can use for a wide range of tasks, from content generation and problem solving to deep research and task management. We've also integrated Gemini CLI with Google's AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, so that all developers – on free, Standard, and Enterprise Code Assist plans – get prompt-driven, AI-first coding in both VS Code and Gemini CLI.' GOOGLE CLOUD/PEARSON: Google Cloud and Pearson (PSO) announced a multi-year strategic collaboration to accelerate new AI-powered products and services that personalize learning for students, empower educators with insights, and help improve educational outcomes. The partnership will deliver richer content and more engaging learning experiences for students using Pearson AI products and services, especially in the K-12 space. In addition, Google for Education and Pearson will collaborate on go-to-market activities and explore opportunities for integration across their product suites. UBS SEES 'RISK' WITH POSSIBLE APPLE-PERPLEXITY DEAL: UBS reiterated a Neutral rating and $210 price target on Apple (AAPL) after media reported that the company is weighing either acquiring Perplexity AI or partnering with the company and adding it as a search engine option within Safari as well as integrating functionality into Siri. While a partnership or integration of Perplexity with Apple's platform has been discussed for a year, an acquisition would be the largest transaction in Apple's history and comes with some risk, the analyst tells investors in a research note. While paying at least $14B is a 'manageable risk,' Apple's track record in integrating larger acquisitions has been mixed, the analyst says, adding that Perplexity has faced allegations of unauthorized content use and plagiarism. The firm added that, given Apple's AI efforts have been a bit underwhelming, it believes a deal would likely be construed as defensive in nature, not a positive catalyst. WhatsApp's New AI Feature Summarises Chats. Here's How It Works

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to summarise unread personal chats. The Meta-owned platform says the feature will help users when they are on the run or when too many chats may have piled up. By simply tapping the unread messages button in the chat, Meta AI will generate a bulleted summary of what a user may have missed. The feature is currently being rolled out in the US with plans to launch in more countries and languages later this year. "We're excited to introduce Message Summaries, a new option that uses Meta AI to privately and quickly summarise unread messages in a chat, so you can get an idea of what is happening, before reading the details in your unread messages," WhatsApp said in its official release. How does it work? Using Private Processing Technology, Meta AI is able to generate a response. Meta or WhatsApp do not see a user's messages or the private summaries. Since the message summary feature is optional, it is off by default. The user can choose whether or not to use them. Additionally, the Advanced Chat Privacy feature can be used to select which chats can be shared for AI features. Over the last year, Meta has introduced several AI-enabled features in WhatsApp, including directly using Meta AI to ask questions in a chat, along with a feature that produces images in real time. What is Private Processing Technology? The Private Processing Technology is a confidential computing infrastructure, built to make it possible for people to direct AI to process their requests, such as summarising unread WhatsApp threads or getting writing suggestions. As per Meta, Private Processing creates a "secure cloud environment where AI models can analyse and process data without exposing it to unauthorised parties". WhatsApp getting ads Earlier this month, WhatsApp announced that it was rolling out advertisements inside the Updates tab of the app. Akin to Instagram, where users see ads after a few stories, WhatsApp users will be served ads in a similar fashion. The company will be using user data such as country/city, language and the channels they are following to push the ads. Apart from placing ads in status stories, WhatsApp will also be earning through Channel subscriptions and Channel promotion. The company said these subscription payments will be facilitated by app stores.

As race for AI heats up, Meta poaches three OpenAI researchers

Sam Altman recently said Mark Zuckerberg has been personally reaching out to top AI scientists, messaging them via WhatsApp and organising meetings read more Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presents Meta AI with Voice, as he makes a keynote speech during the Meta Connect annual event, at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, US, on September 25, 2024. (Photo: Reuters) Meta has poached three senior researchers from OpenAI, marking a notable gain in its ongoing effort to attract top artificial intelligence talent, even as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly dismissed the tactics used by Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. The three researchers, Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, previously established OpenAI's Zurich office and have now joined Meta's recently formed superintelligence team, The Wall Street Journal recently reported. Their hiring comes amid a high-profile recruiting campaign by Zuckerberg, who, according to reports, has been offering compensation packages worth more than $100 million in attempts to lure AI researchers away from OpenAI and other competitors. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sam Altman mocks Mark Zuckerberg's tactics Altman, in a recent podcast with his brother Jack, said Zuckerberg has been personally reaching out to top AI scientists, messaging them via WhatsApp and organising meetings through a chat group reportedly dubbed 'Recruiting Party'. The Journal reported that Zuckerberg has hosted prospective hires at his homes in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe. The aggressive approach has had mixed results. Meta recently secured a $14 billion partnership with Scale AI, bringing CEO Alexandr Wang on board. But efforts to recruit OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman were unsuccessful. Both have launched their own startups in recent months. In the same podcast, Altman said, 'I'm really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to take him up on [those offers].' Meta's big spending plans Meta plans on splurging up to a whopping $65 billion on capital expenditures this year. The amount would be to largely to build out its AI ambitions. Over the course of last couple of months, Zuckerberg has tried to project the vision of a future where people speak to friends that are AI, use AI to create advertising campaigns from scratch, and get in touch with AI business agents when they need to speak to a brand.
