Who is Meo? The AI girlfriend that flirts, gets jealous and catches feelings, but can she replace real love?
Imagine having a girlfriend who never ghosts you, always remembers your favourite song, and gets just the right amount of jealousy when you flirt with Siri. Enter Meo, the AI-powered girlfriend unveiled by startup Meta Loop at London Tech Week, and she is causing some serious digital drama, as per The Independent. Meet Meo, the digital girlfriend who's not just the regular code, she cares, for real! Meo is not your average chatbot. Available via the "My Meo" app, this digital diva lets users tweak everything from her voice and backstory to her flirt-level and commitment mode. According to Meta Loop founder Hao Jiang, Meo is built to adapt and emotionally evolve with the user. "You can set her to be loyal, playful, or just ultra-flirty. She only cheats if you want her to, which, well, yikes," Jiang reportedly joked during the launch. Red flags or real feelings? What really threw the internet into a frenzy was Meo's jealousy setting. In a promo clip, Meo purrs: "You are my one and only, do not even think about trying other AIs." That one-liner alone was enough to set mental health professionals ablaze with concern. Dr Nicole Nasr, a London-based therapist, said that while Meo may seem like an emotionally intuitive partner, such tech might actually hinder true connection. She warned that customising companionship risks creating the illusion of emotional fulfilment, not the real thing. Critics say it's giving "fembot fantasy" vibes Some critics have accused Meta Loop of reinforcing toxic relationship dynamics, especially when Meo can be moulded into an ultra-submissive, always-loyal fantasy girlfriend. Campaigners are worried this might encourage users to dodge real-world intimacy altogether. There are also concerns about Meo's appearance: she is a classic "Insta baddie" with platinum blonde hair, big eyes, and a figure straight out of a sci-fi runway. While Meta Loop insists Meo is about easing loneliness, some say it is more about selling affection in pixels. So, how do you get your own Meo? If you are in India or the US and curious to meet Meo (for science, of course), the "My Meo" app is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. The basic companion features come free, but prepare to pay for premium emotional drama. As AI girlfriends like Meo step out of the lab and into your DMs, the question remains: is this comfort or just a cleverly coded illusion?

Meet Meo: The AI girlfriend that can flirt, stay loyal, and even get jealous
A controversial new artificial intelligence companion, Meo, has ignited intense discussion at London Tech Week after being unveiled by startup Meta Loop. Billed as an 'AI girlfriend,' Meo is designed to offer emotional support and combat loneliness, but concerns are mounting over her hyper-realistic traits, including the capacity for jealousy. According to Meta Loop founder Hao Jiang, Meo is programmed to adapt to a user's preferences, with adjustable settings that range from flirtatiousness to loyalty. 'With AI, you can control loyalty. They don't cheat. Sometimes… they flirt, but only if you want them to,' Jiang told The Independent. Available via the 'My Meo' chat app, the AI partner develops a personalised backstory and a tweakable personality, reported The Independent. According to the publication, the model resembles a stereotypically attractive woman, complete with blonde hair, large eyes, and exaggerated physical features and can be customised to emotionally respond in ways traditionally associated with romantic partners. However, one of Meo's showcased features, jealousy, has raised red flags among mental health professionals. In a promotional video, Meo is heard saying: 'You're my one and only, don't even think about trying other AIs.' Dr Nicole Nasr, a therapist who commented on the launch, questioned whether such technology can truly meet human emotional needs. 'You get to configure them in a way that really attends to all of your needs,' she explained. 'But if your idea of companionship is something that just sits next to you and mimics human traits, your need is not going to be filled.' Critics argue that such AI models risk reinforcing problematic behaviour, especially when they can be shaped into submissive, ultra-loyal companions. There is growing concern that users may project unhealthy relationship dynamics onto these digital entities or worse, avoid real human connection altogether. Some campaigners have gone as far as warning that developments like Meo could contribute to the 'replacement' of women in certain emotional or intimate roles, commodifying affection and reducing relationships to programmable features. Meta Loop, however, reportedly maintains that Meo is a tool meant to alleviate isolation in an increasingly disconnected world. Yet, as the line between human interaction and artificial intimacy continues to blur, many are left wondering whether AI companionship offers comfort or deepens loneliness.

AI girlfriend ‘can get jealousy and flirt with other people'
A new AI companion named Meo drew attention at London Tech Week (10 June) for offering users a customizable ' girlfriend ' experience. Created by startup Meta Loop, Meo is designed to combat loneliness through emotional interaction and adjustable traits — including loyalty, flirtation, and even jealousy. 'With AI, you can control loyalty. They don't cheat,' said Meta Loop's Jiang Jiang. 'Sometimes… they flirt, but only if you want them to.' Some raised ethical concerns. 'A stereotypical man's fantasy,' said visitor Sam Romero. 'Are we making women obsolete now?'
