Breakthrough achieved in Mumbai Metro Line 7A: 61% work completed, tunnel linking Andheri and airport reaches major milestone
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metro Line 7A project has hit a major milestone with the successful completion of a 1.65-km tunnel connecting Andheri (East) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). On July 14, 2025, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) T-60 achieved the breakthrough, marking significant progress in this critical infrastructure project. Executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), tunneling began on September 1, 2023, with the TBM drive starting on November 4, 2023. The tunnel, with a finished diameter of 5.6 meters, was built using 1,178 rings — each 1.4 meters in length and made up of 6 segments. The depth of the tunnel ranges from 12 to 28 meters. The overall Metro Line 7A corridor spans 3.4 km, with a 2.5 km underground section. It includes two underground stations — Airport Colony and T2 Airport — and is designed as a partially elevated and partially underground alignment. The project, targeted for completion in 2026, has now reached 61% completion. Key engineering challenges tackled include construction under the Sahar Elevated Road, an overpass above Metro Line 3, diversion of a major sewer line, and crossing an underground water pipeline. Metro Line 7A will eventually integrate with Metro Lines 2A, 7, 9, and 3, strengthening Mumbai's metro network and easing travel across the city.

Two more trains on anvil on Mumbai Metro's lines 2A and 7 as ridership reaches 3 lakh daily
As the daily ridership for Metro Lines 2A (D N Nagar to Dahisar East) and 7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East) has surpassed the three-lakh mark, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) is planning to add two more trains to manage the increasing number of passengers. On Thursday, MMMOCL ran trial trips with two additional trains on the corridors during peak hours to judge their operational viability. Sources said that, depending on the outcome of the trial run, a decision will be made to incorporate these trains into regular operations. On July 8, a record 3.01 lakh commuters travelled through these two metro lines, the highest ever single-day ridership. Officials mentioned that the number of passengers is increasing gradually, particularly during rush office hours, resulting in platform and train congestion. Currently, 284 daily trips are run on Metro Line 2A and Line 7 together. In response to growing demand for passengers, there is a call to cut down on headway between two trains and add more trips. To respond to this, the transport authority piloted running two more trains on Thursday, aside from the standard schedule. It was stated by officials that the success or failure of the test run would determine if the services can be run regularly. With the additional services put in place, the number of operating trains on the two corridors will be 30. The growing ridership has prompted transport planners to look at ways to optimise capacity and improve frequency on both corridors. MMMOCL will make a decision in the next few days about routine deployment of the two new trains after reviewing performance figures on the trial run.

Mumbai Metro lines 2A and 7 achieve carbon neutrality with certified carbon offset units
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) earned 85,849 Carbon Offset Units (CoUs) for Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East–DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East–Gundavali), officially certifying them as carbon-neutral corridors. This achievement makes them the first metro lines in Mumbai to achieve carbon neutrality, based on PAS 2060:2014 standards, a global benchmark. The certificates were formally handed over to Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, in the presence of senior officials, including chief secretary Sujata Saunik, MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, and MMMOCL MD Rubal Agarwal. The carbon credits, certified by the Universal Carbon Registry, account for greenhouse gas emission reductions between Jan 2023 and Dec 2024, thanks to the modal shift from personal vehicles to metro services. The initiative helped avoid 85,849 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (TCO₂eq) emissions. Panel for fixation of fares for Metro 2A & 7 proposed
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed setting up a fare fixation committee (FFC) for Metro Lines 2A and 7 — a statutory step under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. The move, approved by the Authority, is a procedural requirement and it does not imply any immediate fare revision, officials clarified. According to the law, the Central government can constitute a three-member committee, chaired by a sitting or retired high court judge, to review and recommend metro fares. The state and Centre nominate one member each to the panel, both of whom must be senior officials or ex-bureaucrats of at least 'additional secretary' rank. Currently, Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali) are operated by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL). Both corridors saw weekday ridership touch 2.65 lakh since services began on April 2, 2022. "Setting up the fare fixation committee is a legal obligation to ensure transparency in fare governance. It's part of the compliance process and not a sign of imminent fare hikes," said an MMRDA official. Once the state govt clears the proposal, it will be forwarded to the Centre for formal constitution of the committee.

25% rail users take to Metro,8% shift from cars: IIT study
Mumbai: An IIT study conducted three months after the launch of Metro Lines 2A and 7 revealed improvements in commute times, rider satisfaction, and air quality, although the shift from private cars remains two corridors, which began operations in Jan 2023, span a total of 35km and cater to commuters in the western suburbs. According to the study, 81% of riders save nearly 26 minutes each way on their daily commutes, which adds up to over 50 minutes saved per day.
