Mobility for cities of tomorrow focuses on sustainable transport in Madhya Pradesh

At the Madhya Pradesh Growth Conclave on Friday, a pivotal session was conducted on 'Mobility for Cities of Tomorrow', focusing on sustainability, emission reduction, affordability, and accessibility of public transport . The speakers discussed current transport facilities in India, innovations, and alternatives to fuel-run vehicles, including electric, hydrogen, and ethanol options. They also explored routes like waterways and airways to divert traffic from the roads. Additionally, they addressed ways to reduce pollution, costs, and accidents while integrating modern infrastructure to ensure end-to-end connectivity. There was a strong emphasis on increasing the use of electric vehicles , including heavy vehicles that contribute significantly to pollution. Therefore, the number of sellers (manufacturers and dealers) must be increased through incentives and other means. The speakers informed about the govt's incentive to boost the sale of electric vehicles. Furthermore, the speakers highlighted crowd management as a priority, including at bus and railway stations, ensuring adequate use of road space by removing encroachments and illegal parking, increasing women's participation in the system for gender equality, and the proper use of data. They also encouraged not hesitating in experiments, innovations, and the use of modern technologies to improve the traffic and transport system. They stressed that experiments are underway to produce hydrogen and ethanol-run vehicles, but it will take time to build the required infrastructure and integrate technologies for them. MP Metro Rail Corporation Limited MD Krishna Chaitanya mentioned that some ropeway projects are underway in MP, along with Metro Train projects in Indore and Bhopal. However, he noted that water routes for transportation are yet to be fully explored in MP and, thus, are not currently part of considerable plans for the mobility of the near future.

Watchdog flags level crossing risk after Sunderland Metro crash

A rail watchdog has highlighted the risk pedestrians face at some level crossings after a person was hit by a Metro accident happened on the Blue Horse Lane footpath in Sunderland on 18 April, according to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).A preliminary investigation by the watchdog found there was a risk at the site that an approaching train may be hidden to a pedestrian by a previously passing train. However, RAIB found there was signage to warn people about this hazard. Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus said it was "reassured" by this finding. The watchdog said the crash was similar to one which occurred in Surrey in April 2022, causing the death of an 85-year-old investigation into that crash led to Network Rail fitting new signage to all level crossings with two lines or more. These signs read: "Oncoming trains can be hidden by other trains" as well as containing a warning for users "not to cross until all lines are clear".It said this signage had been fitted at Blue Horse Lane footpath at the time of the crash. 'Be alert at crossings' RAIB said the driver of the Metro train had been able to apply the emergency brake before hitting the pedestrian on the crossing. Nevertheless the walker suffered "serious injuries", it said. Due to the watchdog's earlier report about the risk of trains being hidden by other trains at some level crossings, RAIB said it was unlikely that a full investigation into this latest crash would lead to any new safety improvement meant it would not investigate further, though it did say it had written to the Office for Rail and Rail (ORR) to "draw attention" to the crash and highlight the industry's "current and future management of this known risk". Nexus urged members of the public to follow the guidance of signs and stay alert at foot crossings."Our thoughts and best wishes remain with those involved in the incident on 18 April," it ORR said its investigation into the crash, which was separate from RAIB's, was still ongoing and therefore it could not comment. Metro surpasses 50k ridership in 3 days

Indore: Indore's newly inaugurated Metro Train became an instant sensation, running 'overloaded' with thousands of enthusiastic citizens flocking to stations for a 'joy ride' on the city's latest mode of transportation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In just three days since its launch, the Metro comfortably surpassed the 50,000 ridership mark, a clear indication of the overwhelming public excitement. However, the current surge in ridership is expected to see a considerable drop after June 7, when the initial 'Joy Ride' period, offering free rides, comes to an end. Despite recording over 15,000 daily ridership between 8am and 8 pm, a significant number of travellers are eagerly awaiting the extension of the Metro. Currently, the Metro operates on an approximately 6 km-long 'Super Priority Corridor' on the Super Corridor. However, citizens are keen for its expansion to the approximately 17.5 km-long 'Priority Corridor' that will reach Radisson Square. Many believe this extended route will provide a "suitable" transportation option due to the comfort, hassle-free nature, economical fares, and its pollution-free, eco-friendly ride. Among the hundreds of passengers enjoying the Metro's maiden run were employees of a major IT company located on the Super Corridor. "I reside near Bapat Square and currently commute to the office on my bike," shared Rajat Sharma, an IT professional. He expressed his eagerness for the Metro's extension, hoping for an economical, weather-proof, and comfortable ride directly between his colony and the IT company's entrance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sharma's colleague, Akshita, who lives near Chandragupta Maurya (MR-10) Square, highlighted her daily commute challenges. "The bus service recently stopped, and now every day, I have to somehow manage to reach the office," she told a local daily. "However, this will not be the case once the Super Priority Corridor of the Metro is commercially operational and extended." Madhu Mishra, an MBA student who also works part-time in Vijay Nagar, echoed the sentiment for a longer commercial run. "Apart from offering all these facilities and comfort, the Metro Train's fare is very reasonable," she added, emphasising the affordability of the new transport system. The initial overwhelming response clearly indicates Indoreans' readiness for a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transportation system. The true test and sustained success of the Indore Metro, however, will likely hinge on the timely completion of its extended corridors, promising a more comprehensive and impactful service for the city's commuters. Talk of The Town Overwhelming Enthusiasm: Despite light to moderate rains, thousands, including families, friends, and groups of children, flocked to the Indore Metro for its "Joy Ride," showcasing immense public excitement. Safety Measures & Awareness: While some excited passengers, mostly children, were seen pushing panic buttons, hanging on handlebars, or not maintaining distance from doors, security guards promptly educated them on rules and regulations, including penalties for violations. MPMRCL PRO Himanshu Grover stated no formal violations were registered, adding that over 150 security guards and extensive CCTV coverage ensure close monitoring. Big List of Do's, Don'ts and Violations with Penalties: MPMRCL issued a guideline for the passengers, which are pasted on all the stations and inside the Metro Train, to follow. Besides, information is also available to the public about the violations that can lead to penalties, imprisonment, or both. Free Rides Drive Initial Ridership: Many families and friends joined the "Joy Ride" due to the free travel offer. However, working professionals anticipate a significant drop in ridership once ticketing begins. Reasonable Fare Structure: Travellers have generally found the Metro's fare structure to be reasonable. For the current 5-station 'Super Priority Corridor' (Gandhi Nagar to Super Corridor-03), fares range from Rs 20 to Rs 30. The broader Yellow Line, eventually covering 28 stations, will have fare slabs from Rs 20 to Rs 80, depending on travel zones. Promotional Discounts: To encourage public adoption, MPMRCL launched a three-month promotional discount scheme: free QR tickets until June 7, followed by 75% off in the second week, 50% in the third week, and 25% off up to the third month. Impressive Initial Ridership: MPMRCL officials reported approximately 26,000 passengers on the first day, and around 16,000 each on Monday and Tuesday, highlighting the strong initial public interest. |

CM Oversees Metro Run

Indore: Chief minister Mohan Yadav after Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's public meeting in Bhopal, on Saturday evening arrived in Indore and took a ride in the Metro Train. During his journey, Yadav visited the metro's engine cabin to observe the operational systems and discussed the metro rail's functioning with officials, gathering detailed information. He also took the opportunity to interact with the women passengers, inquiring about their initial experiences with the new service. Upon arrival at the station, the Chief Minister garlanded the statue of Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. Accompanying the Chief Minister were several prominent dignitaries, including Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat, MP Shankar Lalwani, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, MLAs Ramesh Mendola, Madhu Verma, Golu Shukla, Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, and Usha Thakur, along with senior officials concerned. It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated this metro rail project earlier today from Bhopal, during a Mahasammelan on Women Empowerment held on the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary year of Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. The metro rail boasts all modern, convenient, and environmentally friendly transportation facilities. Swachh transport: Minister Indore: Union minister of state for housing and urban affairs Tokhan Sahu on Saturday lauded the Indore Metro project, calling it a prime example of a clean, safe, and environment-friendly transportation system. His remarks came during the launch of Indore Metro's commercial run at Gandhi Nagar Station, which has been renamed as Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal. On the occasion, he, along with MP Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and other dignitaries, flagged off the train. They also observed the station infrastructure, passenger amenities, and operational readiness. "The Indore Metro project will not only accelerate the city's traffic flow but also stands as an excellent example of a clean, safe, and eco-friendly transport system," said Sahu. He emphasized that the project "realizes Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dreams of 'Smart Cities' and a 'Green India.'" "The Metro will also become a new identity of pride and progress of Indore," he said as the minister also remembered Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar on her 300th birth anniversary. Sahu further highlighted the central govt's commitment to strengthening urban transportation systems across the country, citing the Indore Metro as a successful illustration of these efforts. Platform Screen Doors To Be Operated Manually For A Few Days Indore: With the initiation of Indore Metro's commercial run, the real testing of 'Platform Screen Doors' (PSDs) was checked as hundreds of enthusiastic people made a beeline and put a burden on it. "Indore is the country's first city where Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Defence (govt of India), has installed 'Platform Screen Doors' while working in collaboration with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC)," a senior official, wishing anonymity, said. He added that the doors would initially be manually operated for the next few days. He added that PSDs are crucial for modern metro systems as they isolate platforms from tracks, ensuring enhanced safety. These doors open only when trains align perfectly with the platform, preventing accidents, trespassing, and objects from falling onto tracks. PSDs synchronize with train doors for seamless operation across the platform, ensuring passenger convenience and safety. "MPMRCL has signed an agreement with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to supply indigenously manufactured Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) for the Bhopal and Indore Metro Rail Projects. This initiative aligns with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and enhances passenger safety and operational efficiency on metro platforms," he said, adding that around 400 tests on PSDs have been carried out to check their load capacity and other parameters.
