Mets' first pitch turns into WWE melee at Citi Field in funny scene

Tiffany Stratton's attempt at first pitch redemption at Cit Field was interrupted on Monday night by a WWE rival in a funny moment involving Stratton, Nia Jax and Mr. and Mrs. Met donned in wrestling costumes. Stratton had thrown out the first pitch last month ahead of a Mets-Nationals game when she sent her first pitch attempt sailing far to the right of Mets outfielder Jared Young. Back to try her hand at it again on WWE Night, Stratton was interrupted by Nia Jax, who walked out onto the field as Stratton was about to throw and stole the ball from her. The two pushed and shoved each other – in a similar fashion you would see on a WWE broadcast – as Mr. and Mr. Met ran out to break up the two wrestlers. 6 Tiffany Stratton (L) struggles and fights with Nia Jax (R) in a scuffle before the game when Stratton planned to throw out the ceremonial first pitch when the New York Mets played the Los Angeles Angels Monday, July 21, 2025 at Citi Field in Queens, NY. WWE Night came a little less than two weeks before SummerSlam takes over MetLife Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3. Try it free A few of the milestones Pete Alonso reached Saturday afternoon: Broke a tie with David Wright and now has slugged 11 career home runs against the Yankees, the most in Mets history. With five more RBIs, reached 659 for his Mets career to move ahead of Mike Piazza for third in franchise history. Of course, the most significant number for Alonso to attain this season remains in front of him, but his two home runs on the day brought him closer to Darryl Strawberry. After a multihomer game that helped the Mets pull away from the Yankees, Alonso is up to 246 dingers for his career — six away from the all-time franchise record. 'I know it,' said Alonso, who has been asked about it frequently, 'but I just want to help the team win. That's really all I want to do.' 3 Pete Alonso acknowledges the fans for a curtain call during the Mets' 12-6 win over the Yankees on July 5, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post He did so again in the 12-6, Subway Series victory at Citi Field, which began with a Brandon Nimmo grand slam and continued with Alonso doing the bulk of the rest of the offensive damage. When Alonso is at his best, he is ignoring pitches out of the strike zone and crushing the mistakes that are thrown. In the first inning, he ignored five pitches from Carlos Rodón and happily took first base before Nimmo stepped up and pulled his blast to right. After a seven-pitch battle that ended in a strikeout in the third, Alonso found a second-pitch, down-the-middle fastball from Rodón and did not miss it, smashing the home run to right-center in the fifth. 3 Darryl Strawberry has the Mets franchise record for home runs. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Two innings later, this time with Jayvien Sandridge on the mound, Alonso liked the first pitch he saw — another fastball — and demolished it to left for a three-run shot. 'He's controlling the strike zone,' manager Carlos Mendoza said of Alonso. 'We know the power. We saw it today to the pull side, to right field. But not chasing [is helping].' The Mets were hoping Kodai Senga would only require one rehab start. After his first, he might require a second. With Double-A Binghamton, Senga allowed four runs (three earned) in 3 ²/₃ innings in which he allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four. He threw 68 pitches and did not complete four innings, as hoped. 3 Kodai Senga injures his hamstring during the Mets-Nationals game on June 12, 2025. JASON SZENES/NY POST It is still possible the Mets ask Senga — who could throw 75-80 pitches in his next outing — to return next weekend at Kansas City, but they now face that decision. Senga, Sean Manaea and Jesse Winker headline the crew of reinforcements getting close to helping the Mets, but Brooks Raley is approaching becoming an option, too. The lefty tossed another scoreless inning with Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. In six games since his rehab assignment began June 17, he has totaled 6 ²/₃ innings in which he has allowed five hits and no runs, walked one and struck out 11. The Mets, whose bullpen has lost lefties A.J. Minter and Danny Young plus strong righties in José Buttó, Dedniel Núñez and Max Kranick, could use that kind of production — but expect to wait until the other side of the All-Star break before summoning Raley. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS The 37-year-old is recovering from May 2024 Tommy John surgery and stretching out slowly. Friday represented his first time pitching on one day's rest. He has not yet gone back-to-back, which Mendoza said must happen before he is activated. 'He's put himself in a good position,' Mendoza said of Raley, whom the Mets re-signed in April on a one-year deal that contains a club option for 2026. 'He's responding well, bouncing back well. Now we're basically preparing him for potential scenarios with the way we want to use him here.' Mendoza on Juan Soto's sacrifice bunt with runners on first and second and no outs in the first inning: 'That's part of the show,' he said with a smile, and two batters later Nimmo launched the grand slam. For the first time since being shut down with a right elbow sprain in mid-June, Tylor Megill threw Saturday. The righty was not sure about his timetable, but he will need to be built up carefully after a nearly three-week shutdown. 'We'll take our time, but hopefully not too long,' Megill said. The Mets officially signed veteran righty reliever Zach Pop, who was active for the game. Austin Warren, who pitched 1 ²/₃ innings Friday, was optioned to Syracuse. To make room for Pop on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated Tyler Zuber for assignment. The Mets did not option Friday starter Justin Hagenman, who could receive a second major league start Thursday in Baltimore. It is possible that Hagenman is needed in relief before then, but the Mets will need a starter Thursday after Brandon Waddell is expected to serve as the bulk pitcher Sunday — with Chris Devenski as the opener — Clay Holmes on Tuesday and David Peterson on Wednesday. The rehabbing Manaea and Senga can return, at earliest, the following series in Kansas City.

Kodai Senga feels ‘great' during rehab in optimistic sign for Mets rotation

Try it free If we learned anything last year, it was to not look too far ahead when it comes to Kodai Senga returning from an injury. But there were signs of progress on Monday, as Senga played catch off a mound for the first time since he strained his right hamstring during a start on June 12. Advertisement The right-hander, who was limited to just one regular-season outing a year ago due to shoulder and triceps issues and then a strained calf, said through an interpreter Monday that he felt 'great' before throwing in the bullpen with some intensity. He's been able to continue throwing after his latest health setback, which gives the Mets cause for optimism that Senga will avoid the lengthy absences of a year ago, when issues with his mechanics kept him out for most of the season. 'As of right now, I'm not concerned at all,'' Senga said when asked about those mechanics. 'As things progress and I throw harder, mechanics will be more important. I have to continue to be careful.' 'Conversations are very important,'' Senga said. 'We'll take it day by day. Some days I'll push further and others I'll take a step back.' Senga said Monday he doesn't remember exactly what caused the hamstring strain when he was covering first base and had to lunge for a high throw from Pete Alonso. Advertisement 'When I came down, the general area was painful,'' Senga said. Kodai Senga is making progress in his rehab for a hamstring injury. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect At this point, the focus is on getting him back into a rotation that's also without Tylor Megill, who suffered an elbow sprain just days after Senga went down, as well as Sean Manaea (oblique) — although Frankie Montas is scheduled to make his first start of the season on Tuesday after dealing with a lat strain. Senga added that he next needs to be able to run at full speed and make cuts before beginning a likely rehab assignment. Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Carlos Mendoza, who saw firsthand the stops and starts that plagued Senga a year ago, was encouraged by his progress this time around. 'The good thing is he kept throwing even right after the injury,'' the manager said. 'Now he's already on the mound, letting the ball go with some intensity is a good sign … not even two weeks [later].' Prior to the season, Senga expressed a goal of tossing 162 innings, which would be in line with the 166 ¹/₃ innings he threw two years ago as a rookie. At 73 ²/₃ innings this season, that number might be out of reach. 'It's more difficult, but depending on how I perform in the later part of the season, maybe it will seem attainable,'' Senga said. 'It's more important I get healthy, get back on the field and throw as many innings as possible.'

Kodai Senga's early injury timeline revealed as Mets struggle without ace

Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free Mets ace Kodai Senga will be out for some time due to the hamstring injury he suffered last week while trying to cover first base. Senga is now expected to miss at least five weeks after suffering the Grade 1 (low grade) hamstring strain in the Mets' 4-3 win over the Nationals on Thursday, The Post's Jon Heyman reported. That would mean that Senga, the National League's ERA leader, would not be available until sometime just before MLB's All-Star break in mid-July. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Friday after the Mets fell to the Rays that the team had gotten some 'good news' regarding Senga and the severity of the injury, before revealing it was a Grade 1 strain. Kodai Senga injures his hamstring during the Mets-Nationals game on June 12, 2025. JASON SZENES/NY POST Senga suffered the injury while covering first base, as he had to extend to try and reach a throw by Pete Alonso. CJ Abrams hit a ball right to Alonso at first and Senga came off the mound to cover the bag, which went from a seemingly innocent play to a blow to the Mets' pitching staff. The throw was a bit high and Senga was forced to leap for the ball and came down awkwardly on the bag, immediately crumpling in pain. Kodai Senga injures his hamstring during the Mets-Nationals game on June 12, 2025. JASON SZENES/NY POST Alonso said following that game that he felt 'awful' about what had happened, even though Mendoza told him Senga said he felt something in his hamstring before the throw. 'I still feel awful because, for me, just trying to make a baseball play. Just trying to make a play for my pitcher,' Alonso said after the win. 'I tried to make the best throw I could. It just sucks. I mean, sucks to be involved in that. Senga, he's one of our guys here and it sucks. You hate to see anyone go down. And yeah, it sucks being a part of that. … I wish it wouldn't have turned out like that.' The Mets were swept by the Rays over the weekend thanks to a 9-0 loss on Sunday in which starter Griffin Canning struggle.

Juan Soto Sends Message After Having Words With Nationals Pitcher

Juan Soto Sends Message After Having Words With Nationals Pitcher originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been nearly three years since New York Mets slugger Juan Soto played for the Washington Nationals, but he is forever cemented in the latter club's lore. The four-time All-Star signed with it as an international free agent in 2015, and it developed him into a future Hall of Famer. Advertisement The Nationals called up a 19-year-old Soto in May 2018, making him the league's youngest player at the time. The five-time Silver Slugger led them to their first-ever World Series title just one season later, slashing .277/.373/.554 with five homers and 14 RBI over 17 playoff games. Washington then traded Soto and Josh Bell to the San Diego Padres in August 2022 for CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell, James Wood, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Voit. Fast-forward to Tuesday, and Soto smacked a 373-foot solo homer to left center off of Gore in the third inning of the Mets-Nationals game. The 26-year-old shared what he said to Gore as he rounded the bases, via Anthony DiComo. New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto (26).Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images "We were saying hi to each other. Soto finished the contest 2-for-4 with the homer, two RBI, and two runs scored. The 6-foot-1-inch, 224-pounder is now slashing .248/.386/.454 with 12 home runs and 33 RBI across 66 games. The Mets are five games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East and a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers for baseball's best record.
